A Lucinda Pierce Investigation - When childrens charity worker Sharon Flemming is brutally murdered and a note found by her mutilated body bears the words I was left behind, Lucinda Pierce must track down this violent killer before he strikes again. And when a series of notes are also left on her car windshield, she knows this has got personal. Comfort comes from a most unlikely source but can only lead to further complications . . .
Diane Fanning doesn't disappoint. After reading The Trophy Exchange A Lucinda Pierce Mystery--the first Lucinda Pierce book, and enjoying it tremendously, I was anxious to see if she could do it again...and yes she did!
Wit Diane Fanning, the action starts on page one and doesn't let up! Her books are intense and addictive! I love the character of Lucinda Pierce--she's tough and mean and not afraid to challenge the rules if it means saving an innocent. Yet there is a gentle side to her, one I look forward to learning more about.
Readable suspense, but it is very paint-by-the-numbers. I almost quit reading when, on the third page, we are introduced to the main character and the author pulls that whole Look in the Mirror trick to describe the character. Later, there's the Developing Feelings for the Guy from the Hated FBI. And so forth. Plus, we're introduced to the killer in the third freakin' chapter! Stop doing that! We want mysteries!
Probably won't look for her other books. Plot ok, but left hanging as to what happened to Detective Pierce's face to make it so disfigured; no explanation either of her emotional scars from whatever happened to her parents. For those of us who pick up books mid-way in a series, there should be brief information about what has happened previously that still impacts the main character. I was left behind idea interesting, however.
I did enjoy the story but found some of the dialogue to be unnatural. It didn't "sound" right. Also, I could do without the romantic interest between the main character and her colleagues. When reading mysteries and thrillers I find that sort of thing to be rather annoying. But, overall, I have liked this series as I have a preference for strong female lead characters. However, I do wonder if she could really get away with everything she does in this book.
Interesting protagonist, police detective disfigured by shotgun blast to her face. She struggles to keep her job and to prove to everyone that a police officer with one eye can be just as effective on the job as any detcectives with both eyes. She has been able so far to convince the powers that be that she does not want a permanent desk job.
