She never expected to summon a demon THIS sinfully sexy…
Carline swore off witchcraft for good when she arrived at the Swan River Colony. But when her home is attacked, she's forced to consult her spell book for the help of a paranormal protector to keep her safe. Only the smoking hot demon she summons has more than just protection on his mind…
USA Today Bestselling Author Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish. She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below. Sensationalist spin? No - Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all. Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world. The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy. She swears the Mel Goes to Hell series ambushed her on a crowded train and wouldn't leave her alone.
I read this just for the Bell of it. But at times the storyline, though not without interest, seemed like an excuse for the paranormal erotica. It becomes easy to start rooting for the bad guy (Sean the hellspawn) because the good guys (Carline's domineering brother, William, and Reverend Whatsisface) don't have a lot going for them.
This book was a quick, thrilling, read that had me on the edge of my seat! It was an entertaining, action-packed magical adventure about a witch and her protector, the demon she summoned. I devoured this book in one sitting and it had my attention from the beginning. I enjoyed this steamy, emotional romance.
The FMC in this book is a witch who summons a demon. She is a spinster and doesn’t like the rules of colonial society. By the end of the book, I still understood nothing about the MMCs character other than he didn’t like hell but he did like the FMC. Because of that, it was harder to invest in the love story.
I needed a quick read to knock out the last few days of consecutive reading for the 2022 Kindle Summer Reading challenge, and this freebie popped back across my radar. 60-ish pages, short chapters, a prequel story: it sounded perfect for the job. I liked the first half, where we get to know Carline and a bit of her brother William. We get to see how Carline struggles with the restrictions placed on her as a woman, and the very real danger she is in just by being her. Thankfully, though, she also happens to be a witch – and a good one, at that. Her spells always work, which means when four men with bad intentions attempt to invade the mill she half-lives in, she is prepared and takes them down. A little magic, and she’ll have four immortal protectors to keep her safe. Too bad they were family, and her brother’s arrival kept her from completing the ritual. Now Carline has blood on her hands, a very upset brother, and still no protection from bad men. So, what’s a witch to do? Summon a demon protector, of course. And that is where the story dropped for me, as it leaned very heavily into the romance/sex side of things with the demon. We still got some half decent characterization, and there is a solid plot about colonization, women’s rights, and misogyny, but the second half of this short story/novella became far too focused on Carline and her demon’s intimacy for the length of the story. Maybe the full-length novels are more balanced and address more of the serious topics brought up here, or at least don’t swing quite so abruptly to numerous bedroom scenes (imagined or real).
This is a quick novella and I got this free via the author's newsletter.
It was a quick read, the premise being that a secret witch accidentally (sort of) summons a demon 'protector'. The plot is quick thin in that you get to the action and what is happening really quickly, there is some spice in there and a set up for more of their lives in the upcoming series presumably.
I thought the idea of this being set in the colonies after having travelled there from Britain was refreshing and interesting, I was quite surprised by this as the cover didn't really scream that to me. It was clever that the real danger to Carline was the other humans who were increasingly desperate in the new world, turning on each other and stealing each other's livelihoods. That was something I'd not read before so I did think that added to the plot and made it more interesting to me.
What I didn't really like personally was the demon and the fmc's relationship. He was too cinnamon roll and I prefer broody, moody bad guy villains. The fmc started off quite sassy and practicing witchcraft but then kind of watered down and was a bit sappy by the end. Some of their interactions together made me cringe a little bit. It was a very sort of loose sub situation with the demon and the fmc but it didn't really work for me. I don't think I'll pick up anymore in this series but it was a quick read and I'm not mad I read it!
Man, I am making progress with these stuff your Kindle freebies! 5 down, like 200 to go? Dream big.
This was cute! Super quick palate cleanser novella that didn't spend a lot of time trying to pad out some deep existential dilemma.
It's interesting because on one hand, it's surface level erotica. On the other, the smut wasn't super in your face. A lot of it was more poetic and fade to black, and I honestly wasn't mad at that. It's historical fiction and sexual repression is a big theme, so I'm glad I wasn't faced with excessively crude language during sexy time and super coy language everywhere else (there was a little excessive language use, but it's like one time so I'll forgive it).
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it a pleasant surprise to get for free!? Yeah! I wouldn't mind reading from this author again.
I have no idea what's going on with the cover art OR the title though. If I had to guess, the author paid for a commission for a story she later scrapped, and she just used it as a convenient cover for this book because that art is NOT the vibe here!
An edge of your seat emotionally thrilling ride from beginning to end. Highly entertaining, emotionally thrilling, action packed dangerously magic adventure filled with interesting charters and landscape, desire and passion.
So this cover screams punk modern urban fantasy, right? Well it's actually historical with a more basic innocent vibe. Still fun, but the cover does not fit the story whatsoever, to the point where it's kind of an insane catfish.
Nonetheless this served some simple straightforward monsterfucker "I summoned a demon and now he's my boyfriend" stuff, which is obviously the whole point, so I didn't feel too cheated.
It was also kind of funny, so there's that. The main character's brother was such a genuine dipshit it made me laugh every time he was on page, that was a bonus.
I misunderstood the blurb for this book and didn't realize that it was actually set in colonial times. I'm not into historical fiction, and this almost put me off of the story. But the dialogue between Carline and her demon saved it!
While the story isn't very spicy, with most of the 'spice' being implied/fade to black or in the dialogue, it had some great lines. The characters meshed well together. Despite Sean being a demon, their relationship is absolutely what I would consider quaint and vanilla. He may have horns and wings and she may do magic but that's pretty much the extent of the paranormal aspect of the story.
I will say that I was very confused with the setting and language of this book. The FMC mentions kangaroos and giant spiders, which insinuates that it takes place somewhere in Oceania. She also mentions they do trade with the British, but the language and context don't tell us where Carline and William are from or what is going on in the world around them. Basically, it lacks a proper backstory and world building.
For a novella it was a nice, quick read. Very cute.
I enjoyed this book. It’s not to long and not to short just right. This is my second book by this author. I’m still enjoying her work. Carline wasn’t going to practice witch craft anymore. But then her brother has to go away and leaves her on her own. One night her home is attacked. She consults her spell book. She wants to summon the help of a paranormal protector. She gets more than she bargained for. She summons a hot demon and he’s not here to just protect her.
*I received a copy of Heart of Steel in exchange for my honest review*
I actually rated this 3.5 stars
Heart of Steel is a very quick read taking a typical reader about 45 minutes to finish this story making me believe it is a prequel or novella to something larger that I have not read or heard of.
Demelza Carlton has a fresh and "smutty" take on Demons and Witches which was fun to learn about. I did enjoy the short story where the demon is essentially programmed to do anything the "summoner" (the Witch) requires of them in this case that is of the spicy variety.
This story was very different than anything I have read (being my first demon story) and I think it does need to be a stronger story with maybe more editing and more fluidity in the overall story. When I originally started, we meet Carline (the witch) and in the description of the book it says Carline swore off magic but in the story Carline never mentions that she swore off magic but instead was told that she wasn't allowed to do it because her brother told her it will get her killed. So I feel like continuity and uniformity is an issue in this book.
My other issue in this book is that it appears to be set in Colonial times where a woman's worth is nothing and is expected to care for men and take care of the home. This is shown when Carline's brother tells her his expectations and what she can and cannot do. Then he leaves for the rest of the story until the end when he says she won't be his problem anymore (can't tell why because spoilers) and then pawns her off.
My other issue is that because of how short the story is, a lot of the story is so rushed that a lot of the story and the relationship between the Demon and the Witch doesn't make sense because in real life nothing would be as rushed between two human adults. It just wasn't very believable and hard to relate to and envision as the reader.
Overall I liked the book because it was a very quick read and had some smut in it but the story needs more to it to make it more satisfying to read.
A very, very quick read, heavy on the spice. The cover art made me think this was a contemporary setting, but it’s vaguely historical, set in a British colonial Australia sometime after the invention of the rifle—nineteenth century? FMC is a witch, but she tries to hide her spellwork from her brother because he doesn’t like it and thinks she’ll be burned if caught. When he leaves for a trip, their mill is attacked, and her brother catches her dealing with the aftermath. She considers turning her would-be attackers into undead protectors, but is thwarted by her brother. Instead, she uses a different spell to summon a demon to fulfill her every desire—which she innocently thinks means he’ll be her protector, but he swiftly points out that she’s in fact summoned herself a paramour. Luckily, he is fully capable of multitasking and highly motivated to please her, as he wants to stay out of hell as long as possible. Spicy stuff ensues, the brother catches them in flagrante delicto, there’s a shotgun wedding, the end. Not really a love story, since they hardly know each other, but that’s old-timey marriage for ya! Bahaha 🤣 Good thing he’s a shapeshifter because I don’t know how they were going to explain the immortal demon husband remaining ageless for decades.
He seems so ruthless, cunning and predatory in the summary- he is not. Sure, he can rip people apart, tear out their limbs and spray their blood everywhere- but he is nice enough to clean everything up afterwards ^^ He asks to be allowed to fulfill her every desire like a good little sla- *chrm* again and again until she permits him to. So consent is a go here :3 The brother and - the whole family apparently- are... let's say family you don't want to meet even at a family dinner. And that Elias guy who apparently is the reason for her to be attacked because those thugs talked about overhearing him, why was nothing done about him? Oh yeah. Men. I won't delve into our demon feeling their bond and racing to her when she called his name in her sleep to fulfill her desire, but NOT being able to feel that when she is desperately calling his name when attacked and him not showing up for 10 minutes because he is busy with other thugs. And society is much more friendly and welcoming towards her and her abilities than we are led to believe in the begining which makes me accept the 'timeskip to pregnant' epilogue.

Oh, be ready, it’s not a long book — don’t blink or you’ll miss a lot of stuff.
Witch summons a demon to protect her after a failed attempt at getting “zombie protection”, cause her brother is against witchcraft and also, she might have accidentally killed family members. However, she trusts her wards in place to warn her of ill intentions — so, take that zombies to be.
The demon, well — she ends up summoning a desire demon, but he ends up protecting her. Killing for her. And eventually marrying her and having a baby (I told you, it was fast).
This review is totally different from the one I successfully uploaded to my blog, so I had to retype it, re-tell in other words. If you wish to get acquainted with the real deal I suggest visiting https://www.tumblr.com/femalebookworm... and have at it. I’m on mobile, and can’t copy and paste right now. Ergo this hasty review. Might edit it when I have a desktop available, but I think I did an excellent job!
Fierce, but a little doubtful of her abilities, Carline decides to take control of her life using her knowledge of witchcraft. And she hit the jackpot with the devil! I was not expecting the turn this story took. With an ominous start, the author kept me intrigued following the trajectory of Carline and Sean's relationship and the danger that was lurking. With detailed descriptions and interesting narrations, funny scenes and a demon that sometimes looked like a Don Juan, the story was very entertaining for me and laughed with the characters antics. And in the end what a surprise when I realized a mystery that Carline's witchcraft had revealed. Ingenious how the author weaves some stories with others, and has me exclaiming, ah, that's where that came from! Now I am eager to know what happened to the other Steels. Back to the juicy past!
"So, is this marriage for society's sake...or what you want, Miss Steel?" As she gazed up at him, her body still aching from last night's glorious lovemaking, she knew her answer. "I want you, Sean. I want you to protect me, to stand beside me in a fight, to help me dispose of the bodies of anyone who dares threaten us, and afterwards, I want you to fuck me so furiously I forget there is anyone else in the world except you and me. For as long as we both shall live."
A short, 60 page page-turner paranormal erotica featuring a witch summoning a demon for protection, who turns out to be a paramour for desire instead.. This is the prequel to a series of more paranormal romance stories, and I couldn't be happier to have snagged it during this week's witchy Stuff Your Kindle event. Rating: 4 stars 💜💜
What the hell did I just read? What the hell was the point in this book? 🤣 I can’t even say that it was just poorly disguised smut because the smut wasn’t even friggen smut.
I finished this in around a hour due to it being only 150 pages (ebook) and only read it because it has sat in my kindle library for 2 years and thought ‘yeah why not just smash it out’. I can’t say I regret anything simply because there was literally nothing in this book to even give a sh*t about in the first place. There was no actual substance to anything or anyone, the plot was damn near nonexistent and the characters were the equivalent of eating cardboard.
Anyone who rates this highly or reviews this positively was clearly reading a different book.
It says there is several more books but I’d honestly rather stub my toe repeatedly than continue reading this series.
Received as an ARC I am leaving my honest review. This author’s style of writing will keep your attention. The sister, who is a witch, guards a grain mill while her brother goes about his business in other towns. Left to protect herself, 4 men try to gain entry, but she is a marksman. The bodies will be used for a foundation ritual so they may rise as guardians, but her brother returns early and spoils the plan. When he leaves again she resorts to an old Grimora and comes across a spell that will call upon a demon from hell to come protect her and obey all her wishes. Little does she know that the demon will give her all she desires and more! Thrilling action turns steamy white heartfelt emotions build into a story you won’t want to put down!
This book is one steamy read full of love and devotion between a witch and a demon. Carline and her brother Will are trying to make a living in Perth. Will doesn't want anyone to learn that his sister is a witch, and he wants her to quit practicing, but life doesn't allow that. In order to protect herself in her brother's absence, Carline decides to summon a protector and gets a little more than she bargains for. The relationship that builds between these two is swoon worthy in my book. I began with Ms. Carlton's Heart of Stone series and Heart of Steel is the introduction to a series about their relatives. I hope that the rest of the series has as much heat as this book. It is available free on all platforms.
This is the first book in this series. Carline is a witch but she swore off it when she and her brother moved to Australia. When her home is attacked, she decides she needs her magic. She has a plan but that changes when her brother catches on to what she is doing. That doesn’t stop her though just changes the plan. She summons a protector. He is going to do more than protector her though. She never imagined how much her life would change by summoning her protector. This book was a great read. Interesting for sure. Carline and her protector, Sean manage to lead a whole life together without others knowing who he is. This was a great start to the series. I look forward to reading the other books in the series. Demelza’s books are great reads. Great job Demelza.
The beginning of this book did confuse me a little bit because I wasn't sure what time period it was, or where it was based.
The pacing was good and I was kept curious the whole way through.
I liked Carline and Sean. Carline had dreams and desires but society was holding her back. Sean was a good match for her, even if he was a demon.
I'm glad that Carline was able to stand up for herself and stop the strange men from taking over the mill.
The ending was good and it felt like Carline's brother was glad to get rid of her which is why he didn't protest against her marriage to Sean. I liked the small time jump right at the end, it was nice to see that both Sean and Carline got their HEA.
Carlina comes to the Australian colony to live with her brother but he wants her hidden from the single men since he is gone a lot along with his partner but she is a witch and her brother is shocked to come home and find her with blood .on her hands. She finds out some shocking information from him and he warns her about her witchcraft. She searches her grimoire for a protector but ends up with a protector and a paramour that changes her life forever. Entertaining storyline and characters. Danger, steamy adult content. continue series. I purchased a copy. I volunteered an honest review.
Witch Carline was tired of living by society's rules in the colonies. Her brother won't let her practice afraid she'll be found out and burned at the stake, or hung from the rafters, always dressing as a boy to avoid being attacked.
When she summons the otherworldly sinfully drool worthy demon to protect her.. She didn't think anything would happen, but here she is married to the best demon she never expected to summon..... Her nights are never lonely again, only he could give such pleasure.
This story is sinfully hot, so get those towels out ladies....
Great start to this series, I can't wait to read the others.
First of all, this was really short. It seems more a tail than a story, so all of it happens really fast, it was like watching a video at a 3x speed.
Carline is a witch that summons a demon, but not the demon she was expecting. She wanted a protector and got something way more than that. The relationship starts with her trusting him little by little and suddenly it's only smut and more smut.
The story ends in a way that the next book might have more story than smut. But I don't think I'm curious enough for that.
So if you want a quick story with a lot of smut, this is the book for you.
3.5-4.0🌟 stars This story of a strong, determined woman in frontier Western Australia had a good mix of action and steam. The female lead is quick with a rifle when threatened and able to practice sorcery when her brother's not looking but afraid she needs a bit more to keep safe from marauders. And she's right!
It's short so don't expect deep character development. There's heat, fighting and a happy ending. This is a set-up for future stories about some men Carline killed and tried to ensorcel in her strategy to keep the family mill and encampment safe.
This book was such a fast read. It has just enough of spice for how fast of a read it was. Caroline decided to leave witchcraft behind when she moved in with her brother but an event causes her to go back on her word. She then proceeds to try to summon a demon to help protect her, her brother, and the mill, only it goes wrong. (In the best way possible) The hellspawn she got is unlike any other I have read about. It was easy to like him!
