Something to Die For is the ninth and final instalment in the ex-soldier turned CIA operative Ryan Drake series of espionage thrillers. I'd recommend having read the preceding books in the series before this as there is an overarching plot, frequent references to past characters, events and incidents, and Drake’s backstory is something you will not be privy to otherwise. This is an action-packed, exciting and dangerous end to a riveting series. There is never a dull moment throughout and I found myself completely immersed and engrossed with my heart thumping from the adrenaline-fuelled storyline. The plot moves at rapid-fire pace with many spectacular incidents and a brutal, high-octane cat and mouse game at its centre. The tension builds and is ratcheted up as the narrative progresses culminating in an explosive end scene.

Drawing on extensive research into weapons and tactics, as well as the experiences of men who’ve fought in some of the world’s most daunting combat zones, Jordan writes authentic, richly-detailed epics that grip from start to finish. Full of intrigue and intense drama, I raced through this in a nail-biting few hours, desperate to know how it ended for Drake and his enemies and see if he managed to get all of the answers he was looking for. Packed with all the elements that make up the best thrillers: shady dealings, corruption, conspiracies, intrigue, double-crosses, fights, tonnes of action and the engaging characterisation of Drake, who pleasingly has always been portrayed as flawed and very human rather than indomitable, this is a real page-turning climax to the series. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Canelo for an ARC.

This is one of those times when i feel like i've lived under a rock my whole life. This book is an amazing thriller and the series sounds so good that i might have to reschedule my reading time because i need to know so much more about these characters and their stories from the previous books.
There aren't many books that i've read that focuses so much on the details to the smallest thing and i could vision every scene like actually being there with them, taking part in the action with the characters and feel all that adrenaline and blood rush with each page turned and twists that come along and blown my mind, especially the ending because that was very unexpected.
A must read thriller.

Reading this series is like riding a roller coaster…my feeling is all over the place. While the reason I love Ryan Drake series is because the story and characters feel so real and for this genre this is rare. Ryan Drake never went on a mission with super high-tech gears, his team did not lovey doey with each other, their mission…went wrong half of the time. For me, plots in the previous book, Downfall and this final one, Something to Die For are the least realistic in the series but…..the emotion…..it’s too real and very much human. The intensity of the whole series is loosen a bit after we learn about Anya and Cain’s past in Downfall which also ending with a new conflict between Anya and Drake. In this book we learn about the circle; Freya (Drake’s mum) and her role, Cain and his manipulation, other members with high power. With so many gun fights, car chasing, grenade, cat and mouse game around the globe,
Something to Die For is super action packed (as usual), fast paced and add up with so much emotion and inner conflict. Actually, after I was through 80% of the book …..I screamed WTF !….in a good way, though. I mean, after 8 books and Will Jordan is still able to surprise me again and again? Big applause….I’m impressed.
Don’t try to predict any plot twist because not only you wouldn’t even have time to breath but Will Jordan always have a card or two (or three or dozen) up his sleeve! and they are all nicely done too. All loose end are tied up pretty well in this final book and I even teared up toward the ending…..well done!
PS. Thank you Mr. Jordan for not breaking my fragile heart.

Well, the release of this book and my subsequent read of it makes me feel bad about the review that I left for the last book in this series. In that review, I complained about a series of loose ends that were left. For some reason, I was under the impression that the previous book was the last in the series. To my pleasant surprise, all of these loose ends were tied up in "Something to Die For" - with one exception (more about that later).

Much like every book in this series, "Something to Die For" is a page turner. I had trouble putting this book down. I continually wanted to find out what was going to happen to my favorite characters. There are several twists and turns through the book that kept me guessing. Sometimes I guessed right and other times I was completely wrong. I love that about Will Jordan's writing - he's not always predictable.

Back to that loose end... Whatever happened to Ryan Drake's baby that Samantha McKnight was carrying in a previous novel? McKnight is reintroduced in "Something to Die For" but there is no mention of the child. Did she lose it? Did she terminate it? What happened? This is something that the book doesn't resolve. I am wondering if this plot point is covered off in one of the Ryan Drake novellas. I'll be checking out both of those shortly to see.

An entertaining end to the Ryan Drake series. Bravo Will Jordan.

The end of an era - Will Jordan created a monumental masterpiece

After 8 books of compelling intrigue, heart-pounding action and great character drama, Will Jordan brings his cast back together for one final epic confrontation. The result is both immensely satisfying and utterly surprising.

The first half of that statement shouldn’t come as a surprise to seasoned readers of the author as Jordan has only ever delivered too-notch writing, plotting and character development.

But the fact that the author can still surprise readers so close to the end, without it feeling contrived in any way, is a tremendous achievement and a testament to Jordan’s talent.

Even with Harry Potter I could roughly predict how things would play out. Here I was quite sure that I would be able to do the same... But man, was I wrong!

And this is what ultimately makes the book so special: it packs all the cinematic action, game changing twists and emotional punch one would expect but in totally unforeseen ways. Quite simply a masterpiece, which shouldn’t be missed by any true fan of the genre!

After reading nearly 100 books in 2021, I rank the Ryan Drake saga as my number one my #1 pick. It is the best high octane, action packed and riveting spy thriller I have read thus far. As I said in previous reviews, Will Jordan is one heck of the writer. He developed all of the characters very well and over the course of this saga, I not only had grown to care for Ryan Drake, but for his entire team, some of which lost their lives along the way for which I was saddened. It is a dangerous world they lived in, but in their courage, they knew the risks and went on missions anyway. The mysteries, suspense, overall plot and the subplots came together beautifully, some of which caught me by surprise and had me saying "Whoa!". The adversaries throughout the book were clever, vicious, power hungry and every bit of a strong threat that readers would come to expect in a story.

When I began reading this saga, I did not know what to expect. Little did I know that one impossible mission that Ryan and his Shepherd team was recruited for by CIA Deputy Director Marcus Cain and the person known as Maras (aka Anya) that Drake had extracted from a Siberian prison would change his life forever. Anya was an incredible woman who lived through and endured a horrifying past, not only in that prison but even beyond that. Through it all, she remained unbroken, driven and hellbent on revenge against those who betrayed her. Few would have been able to survive what she went through as flashbacks of her story are shared throughout the saga to give readers an idea of what made Anya tick and why she was so strong, fierce, fearless and relentless. Nobody had ever impacted Ryan Drake's live in the manner that Anya did. This was the nucleus of what made this saga great.

The secrets, lies and betrayal that was uncovered was the epitome of how stories like these should be told. Will Jordan's knowledge of weaponry, geography and other key elements consistent with spy novels added a lot of credibility to his depth of storytelling throughout all nine books. If you love action packed and suspenseful spy thrillers, the entire Ryan Drake saga is an absolute must read. I am so glad I found this series. If you get a chance to read it, I have no doubt you will too.

A satisfying end to the series!

This review might just as well be for the series as a whole, and the ninth book delivers some well awaited answers, ties up most of the loose ends and brings all the characters together in a final clash and, as you might expect, not all survive.

The book has, again, some wildly fast-paced action sequences, endless twists and turns (some of which are actually surprising), lush writing and great attention to detail, and an array of interesting, complex characters most of whom end up behaving like monsters a good part of the time. The author has a flair for dramatic, cinematic scenes - so much in fact that it's sometimes possible to anticipate how certain scenes will play out because of this - and this series final is a grandiose ending to a complex (convoluted, perhaps) story with staggeringly many layers and points of view.

This is an entertaining series, no doubt. The main characters are very well fleshed out - even though some aspects of their character sometimes seem to make no sense. The writing is beautiful, the story arch with all its drama and tragedy captivating. I grew to care for Drake, Frost and Anya, even Franklin and Dietrich, and feared for them when seeing them pitted against the imposing intellect of Marcus Cain. All main characters are human, flawed and make mistakes - sometimes with catastrophic consequences. And I can't commend enough the wonderful narration of Sam Devereaux - I've just listened to nine audio books read by him in eight weeks or so, back to back, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

There are some minor gripes I could mention here but they include spoilers so here:

I listened to this book while Russia was invading Ukraine, and the war in real life drew my attention in a way that I'm sure made me pay less attention to this book than I was able to pay to the previous entries in the series. I think I might have enjoyed the book even more had I been able to concentrate on it more - I'm still giving it four stars which means the book is great.

In any case, the book is an exhilarating read and the series gets my recommendation. My hat goes off to the author for creating some memorable characters and scenes - I wonder how much of this he had planned before starting the series, or at which point did he start seeing where the story was going. I will definitely be following his future endeavours. Thank you Will Jordan for writing the Ryan Drake series!

A  heart-pounding exhilarating affair in the last of the Ryan Drake series from Will Jordan. As the truth dawns on Ryan following the Afganistan incident, he decides to resign and return to his sister to uncover the truth behind his mother's death. Ryan and his sister unearths a secret vault operated by their mother and are shocked by her video of revelations. Determined to take out Marcus Cain, he regroups with his team to return to the US and allies with the NSA director to help accomplish his mission. What follows next is step-by-step divination of a sinister machination of deceit, lies, corruption, double-crosses, and treachery by a powerful inner circle determined to bring a new world order in favor of the US and its allies, that will enable them to accumulate enormous wealth and create global political chaos.
Is Marcus Cain a part of this circle or is he just another puppet or is there another dimension to this whole episode? Will Ryan and Anya get to him and extort revenge?  Will they get all answers to their questions they have been looking for all these years? Will Ryan and Anya have their names cleared from the list of fugitives? The last few chapters of this book are a stunning revelation of these answers in a nail-biting roller-coaster ride of intense action that keeps the readers gripped on their seats. The book transpires in different time zones and different locations from London, Mexico, the US, Lithuania, and Pakistan. This whole series of Ryan Drake has been captivating, full of action, and deep-rooted conspiracy. Ryan losses many of his close companions and decides to renounce from such operations. Recommend to read this full series in order to enjoy this grand climax. Hope to see another new series from Will Jordan soon.

Something to Die For, the ninth and final installment in Will Jordan’s Ryan Drake series, published in November 2020. This gripping thriller delivers a powerful conclusion, concluding Drake’s saga with heart pounding intensity.

Drake, on the run, finds himself nearly out of allies except for his sister Jessica. He faces off against corrupt CIA Director Marcus Cain and the enigmatic Circle, a clandestine organization pulling global strings. It’s a desperate fight for survival and truth, and Jordan masterfully weaves this tale, resulting in a deeply satisfying conclusion that left me cheering.

The narrative is a relentless sprint, with Drake and Jessica constantly dodging relentless pursuers across high stakes missions, from covert break-ins to brutal showdowns. Jordan’s storytelling is nothing short of exceptional, skillfully blending explosive action with Drake’s unbreakable bond with his sister. This familial loyalty serves as a steadfast anchor, resonating deeply with me.

The plot is intricate, deftly tying up loose ends with twists that kept me guessing. It also sparked my curiosity about real world intelligence scandals, leading me down a fascinating research path. The faith and freedom themes, subtly woven into Drake’s resolve, add a layer of personal significance to every page.

Something to Die For concludes the series with a resonant and fulfilling finale, a testament to Jordan’s ability to seamlessly balance action with emotional depth. I’m grateful for a novel that honors Drake’s journey, delivering thrills while celebrating the enduring bonds that unite us. For readers seeking a fast paced thriller with a profound soul, this is a must read, serving as a perfect capstone to a series I’ve cherished from beginning to end.

The end of a series always presents a monumental task to its author. Characters who've grown and altered through their fictional experiences still have to find some meaningful conclusion to arcs dreamed up years earlier. Plot threads may have grown cumbersome as they've undergone numerous mutations to accommodate how the story's shifted as a whole. And maybe you've decided only near the climax of the series that some payoffs need to be altered or abandoned in the interest of avoiding bloat.

I'm happy to say that, as far as I'm concerned, Jordan has navigated these many potential pitfalls most dexterously.

No, not everything gave the catharsis or payoff I was hoping for, but the way Jordan managed to add new layers to protagonists and antagonists alike kept me invested all the way through. And, even if I'm not wholly satisfied with an ending, I do try to commend an author when they've managed to have my feelings mirror those of the characters, come the journey's end.

If you're a spy thriller junkie, absolutely read these books. And, even if you're not, you'll likely enjoy them as much as I have. Which is to say considerably.

A well-earned salute to you, Mr. Jordan, and thank you for the journey!

So viele Stunden Langeweile...
Ja, der Plot bekommt ein Ende. Endlich.

Its done. And I have never felt more relief. This was such a tiresome read. Not just this single book. But the entire series. Reading it, made one thing very certain for me. The author is either a narcissist and self proclaimed genius of a story teller that he created a whole profession out of ridiculing other people's works on Youtube and calling out their deficiencies when he is filled with them himself. Or he simply doesn't care. He watched a little too much of movies, and decided to give a chance to write a story for himself on a whim. But his vanity could have been tolerated if his writing was any good. It is bland to say the least. Tedious and Boring. Its so dull and repetitive that going through a short chapter wearies out the reader. The plot, like in the rest of the series, is paper thin, filled with plot holes, and stretched out way too much to fill in pages and volumize the book. But it is a failure. As is he as a writer, if all he could think of are generic cliches to fill a spy thriller.
I don't know how the reviews on Goodreads are so generous and forgiving. Have the standards for good literature fallen so low that this piece of obnoxious reading is hailed with praises and 5 ⭐ reviews?
I have given ⭐ for the book.
And ⭐ ⭐ for having completed it.
Good Riddance.

Wow, what a finale to a great series of books!
As you can tell from that first sentence this book is part of a series featuring the character of Nick Drake. This book should ideally be read after reading the previous ones in the series as it does refer to past events quite frequently. If you were to try reading this with no previous knowledge you could possibly follow it, but the investment in the characters would be difficult as the story assumes for the most part that you have read the full series.
This novel has twists, turns, double crosses and even triple crosses in getting to the final pages. The action starts off at a slower pace to try and get the reader back on the hook, then gradually increases the pacing until the action becomes non-stop in the final act.
If you are a lover of action thrillers, in the mould of Vince Flynn or David Baldacci, then this book is right up your street.
(Note: I have intentionally not puts summary of the plot in this review due to not wanting to put any spoilers in)
Excellent read, and I'm grateful for NetGalley providing an ARC for me to review.

Something to Die For is the 9th and final instalment of the Ryan Drake thrillers and what an outing it is. Unfortunately for me, this is only the first one I have had the pleasure of reading so I am massive out of sorts with the background and previous adventures of the aforementioned hero.

I will try to summarise! So, from what I gather, this is a continuation of the battle against an organisation called The Circle who have infiltrated top organisations and use that influence to better their cause. What that cause is, I am not sure! (My mistake!).

What I can say however, is that Will Jordan has properly properly captivated me and I feel sure to be returning to this series from start to end.
The language, the descriptions, the characters are all mind blowing and to very fine detail.
What can’t you love about it?

A solid solid solid five out of five for me.

Wow!

That’s the word that comes to mind as I just now finished reading Something To Die For. That was the best book I have read in years! And when you read a book (military thrillers) a week, that is saying something.

For fans of Thor, Clancy, Greaney, Flynn and other military or techno-thriller authors, you have NO CHOICE but to do yourself a giant favor and start this series. I am sad to see it ending but holy $&it it was worth it! Let me please repeat myself here - THAT WAS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN YEARS!

(*Please note - I purchased this book, do not personally know the author and have received nothing in return for my review)

Well done Mr. Jordan. Wow!

Will Jordan is a good scene writer and story teller. This is the last of a series of nine novels, though, and as a result a lot of it seems to be tying up loose ends from prior books. One scene is, uninentionally I'm sure, absolutely hilarious. While the CIA chief's body detail is about a half block away, the chief gets into a multi-combatant gun fight in a landmark church, and during said scene the combatants keep discovering new information about the others that result in rapid changes of alliance and life-altering doubts, all wihle firing automatic weapons, hurling grenades and shouting at each other. It's bizarre. But you get through it because Jordan still tells a good tale.

Now that's an ending

Oh. My. God. That was awesome. The number of twists and turns still has my head spinning. Jordan did an awesome job in the last two books showing that good guys and bad guys are so easily defined and the world isn't black and white. Absolutely awesome writing. The pace was insane. The action scenes were something out of a Hollywood movie. I wish this whole series was made by the John Wick people to show just how crazy awesome it all is. After finishing this book, I was happy to see who survived and sad to see who died, but hopeful for what the future holds for Drake. My only unanswered question that is driving me nuts now, what about Sam's baby?

As the author cares more about characterization that most in the genre, by book 9 we are left watching the enormous buildup of grievances, scars, and traumas they have accrued. This combined with Jordan taking Larry Corriea's dictum of always making the villain believe they are the hero of their own story. This meant that by the end Markus Cain was not just truly an idealist throughout the whole story, but with both genuinely good intent and a genuinely good cause. This made much of the ending and its twists shocking and surprising. The end a series of above average works, this itself is one of the best of the "Door-kicker" genere.

Great wrap up!

An excellent wrap up to the series. The action was fantastic. Plot was solid and exceeded expectations. The twists were not outlandishly contrived. But they also didn’t surprise. There was a period of stagnation, mid book, that disconnected me from the story for a bit. But it was a minor hiccup in an otherwise great story. Definitely recommend the read. IMO probably the best Ryan Drake installment of them all.

The series draws to a close resolving all hanging plot points, but leaves open the possibility of a return. It's something of an improvement over the last two, which had started to lose their way, but I didn't fully buy into the multilayered connections to the circle, and how Anya, Caine and Drake were tied together going back decades - seemed strange that Drake's lover and mother were both former lover's of Caine.

This is the last installment of the Ryan Drake series. There are enough twists and turns to make it enjoyable and the main characters get a decent ent standoff. The main issue I have had Ruth this series is that it isn't really the "Ryan Drake" series at all;but instead it is the Anna series. she is the main protagonist and the character around which all of the books are written.

This was a great conclusion to the ryan drake series. A lot of loose ends were tied up except for one thing.

What the fuck happened to the baby sam McKnight was carrying?

I'm hoping this'll get resolved in a side story.

Other than that, this was great. It honestly has twists i didn't see coming and that's refreshing.

A good thriller but confusing and just when you think you have come to the end, something new happens and this reader became confused again as to what the ending really was going to be. Some might believe this is complex but I think I would call it very odd indeed.

I quite liked the characters but not sure I would want to read anymore.

a thrill to the end.

This has been an excellent series. Mr. Jordan should be at the top of the best seller’s list, and someone should be beating down his door to make some films featuring these well crafted characters. Familiar with the format Something to Die for keeps up the fast paced guessing game and balance of action and risk.

Scenes leave you tense and feeling claustrophobic, you feel anxious thinking "if I was in their shoes Jesus how would I feel".

The Ryan Drake novels bring a real sense of adventure and being the grey area of the Greater Good into focus.
