غِيْ فِيّْ (1964-) كاتب صينيّ يُعدّ من بين أهم الكتّاب التجريبيّين والمؤسسين لما يُعرف بتيار "أدب الطليعة" الذي ظهر في ثمانينيّات القرن الماضي بعد انتهاء الثورة الثقافية في الصين، وأُطلق عليه لقب "بورخيس الصين". تقدّمه المترجمة يارا المصري إلى القارئ العربي في ترجمة هي الأولى، من خلال خمس قصص جديرة بالدّرس، تنتظمها تجريبيّة عالية واهتمامٌ بالزّمن عنصرًا هو أساس القَصّ. يهتمّ الكاتب "غِي فيّْ" بالزمن في قصصه القصيرة هذه مرتبطًا بالإنسان ذاته دون تجريد، الإنسان محاصَرًا بنفسه وأحلامه وأحداث حياته، وبُعده المكاني وذاكرته، وكتابته حين تكون تجليًّا للزمن الإبداعي، الذي وإن كان إنشاءً في اللغة، فإنَّه يكشف عمَّا نريده ونحبه في الأدب، وهو ما يقوله الكاتب في إحدى مقابلاته: "نتحدثُ في العادة عن الأبعادِ المكانيةِ الثلاثة، بالإضافةِ إلى بُعدٍ زمني واحد، إِذَن هي أربعةُ أبعاد. كانت ثمة فكرة تراودني لفترة طويلة، وهي أنَّ البُعدَ الأرجحَ الذي يمنحنا مغزىً هو البعدُ الزمني، ولا أعني بذلك أنَّ البُعد المكاني لا أهمية له، بالطبع له أهمية، لأننا في حالةٍ مستمرة من الانتصارِ على الطبيعة، في حالة مستمرة من ابتكارِ الأشياء، وفي حالة مستمرة من إطالةِ بقائنا. لذا، في حدود كهذه، فإنّ كل هذه الجهود هي تغيّرات زمنية، على أنّ هذه التغيرات في الماضي كانت تخدمُ شيئاً ما، كمعنى الإنسانِ على سبيلِ المثال".

About the author

Ge Fei (Chinese: 格非; pinyin: Gé Fēi; Wade–Giles: Ke Fei, born 1964) is the pen name of novelist Liu Yong (刘勇), considered by many scholars and critics to be one of the most significant of the Chinese avant-garde writers that rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s.

Ge Fei was born in Dantu, Jiangsu, in 1964. He studied Chinese literature at East China Normal University and, after graduating in 1985, began to teach there and publish short stories and novellas. He read widely during his studies, but has since noted that he was particularly influenced by Borges, Faulkner and Robbe-Grillet. Some of his early, more experimental works were translated into English in the 1990s, such as "The Lost Boat", "Remembering Mr. Wu You" and "Green Yellow".

One of Ge Fei's most celebrated works is the "Jiangnan Trilogy", which explores the concept of utopia and contains many allusions to Cao Xueqin's Dream of the Red Chamber.

In 2016, The Invisibility Cloak (which had won both the Lu Xun Literary Prize and the Lao She Literary Award in 2014) was the first of his longer works to be translated into English.

أول تجربة مع الأدب الآسيوي وكانت ضبابية بعض الشيء ، الوصف والسرد هما ما ميزا تلك المجموعة القصصية ، لكني لم أفهم كثيرًا من القصص أو بمعنى أدق لم أجد المغزي ونقطة التنوير

Flock of Brown Birds is such a short book and yet such an inscrutable one. Even its own author seems unwilling or unable to say what it was about with the benefit of hindsight. There are shades of Borges or Flann O'Brien in its dense, pseudo-philosophical strangeness and its playful approach to matters of time and space, yet undoubtedly with a Chinese sensibility. It's one which I expect to lend itself to re-reading over the years, like a Solitaire puzzle which is superficially similar but infinitely replayable.

A longish short story in the Penguin Specials series. A decent read but did not reach the level of the author's Invisibility Cloak.

Interesting, kind of a thinker that I’m not 100% sure what to make of but I definitely enjoyed coming back to Ge Fei’s writing after reading and really enjoying the Invisibility Cloak earlier this year. Has some cringey men-writing-women moments that stand out because of the short length but want can you do.

بعض الكتاب يعتقدون أنه كلما كان العمل الأدبي مغلفا بالغموض و التفكك إلى درجة أن يخرج بصورة تبدو غير مفهومة و الأحداث غير مترابطة و حتى الزمان متداخل بين الماضي و الحاضر .. الخيال و الواقع .. و تلاشي الخط الفاصل بينهما مما يثير الارتباك لدى القارئ .. كلما كان روائي جيد ذو نظرة عميقة بعيدة و حس عالي .. و ذلك غير صحيح مع الأسف .. كتاب الطيور البنية المهاجرة ملائم أكثر للسينما عن الأدب .. فقد اتقبل مشاهدة فيلم به لقطات متداخلة من أزمنة مختلفة و اماكن مختلفة دون أن أرتبك أو أسئ فهم الأحداث لأن لغة الصورة تختلف عن الكلمات المقروءة .. كما لن أكون بحاجة إلى قراءة الوصف لتخيل الأشياء و الأشخاص لأن الصورة تحتوي على تلك التفاصيل بالفعل و تقدمها لي دون بذل كثير من المجهود للربط .. أما لغة الكتاب يجب أن تكون أكثر دقة و وضوح و بساطة لاعتمادها كليا على قوة خيال القارئ .. و هذا ما تفتقر إليه القصص .. باستثناء الرواية الأولى المسماة بعنوان الكتاب ( الطيور البنية المهاجرة) التي كانت شيقة جدا و إلى حد ما تميزت بوحدة الموضوع .. على النقيض تماما من الرواية الأخيرة (سي مطرز) و التي كانت الأسوأ على الإطلاق .. التفاصيل الكثيرة التي أسرف الكاتب في وصفها و التي لم تفيد في شئ خلقت نوع من التشويش الغير ضروري على خط سير الأحداث و الشخصيات الرئيسية .. بشكل عام تجربة جيدة و لكنني لن أكرر القراءة لغي في ..
ملاحظة أخيرة : القصص تنتمي لتيار الواقعية السحرية و الأدب الشعبي .. و من الملحوظ أن الواقعية السحرية تخيم على أجواء الكثير من الأعمال الأدبية الصينية كما في رواية الفرار في عام ١٩٣٤ لسو تونغ ..

Looking forward to reading Ge Fei's Invisibility Cloak after reading this. It's a well done long short story where the writing is, at times, quite fresh and entertaining. I stumbled upon this little book while in a book store and was drawn in by the first few lines. Lines like these appear throughout the text punctuating long passages that felt just a touch too dull. I'm looking forward to reading more translations of this author but this feels like a very good dip in the pond before the swim.

I read this in a single lunchtime sitting. Loved the style of writing - it flows brilliantly.

The ending is rather bizarre, and I'd be lying if I said I understood it immediately. Then again, even the author himself jokes in the book's preface that he's not sure he understands it either!

A good short story and introduction to Ge Fei. I'll be checking out The Invisibility Cloak next.

A charming little tale about time, memory, meaning & love. Who’s to say Ge Fei didn’t just conjure up everything in his head? But then who’s to say all these didn’t happen the bizarre & dream like manner they did? & who’s to say that it wasn’t a mixture of both? A psychoanalytic analysis, or just any kind of analysis, would garner interesting interpretations, I should think.

I came across this little book a week or two ago. The title caught my attention. I hadn't heard of the author Ge Fei, before. It reads like a series of dream sequences​, it almost floats.
I'll be looking for more of his work.

Update: 29 April 2022. Gave this novella a reread and like it more this time around. Take it as an experimental piece of fiction in the same vein as modernist and surrealist fiction. Still very beautiful, still wish I could read the original.

Flock of Brown Birds by Ge Fei and translated by Poppy Toland is a magical realism novella which centers around a narrator named Ge Fei who lives in an area called the Waterside and is writing a book. In there, the only way he could measure the progress of time is by watching the migratory brown birds. Full disclosure: I can’t really say I truly understood this novella even though I liked it. It’s certainly weird and operates on dream logic and by the end, I kind of gave up on trying to understand it and just decided to enjoy the prose. The writing is good and the story weaves between timelines. It’s definitely experimental fiction, which I enjoyed due to the dreamlike quality as well as the vivid and evocative writing style.

يكتب غي في عن زمن غائم وذاكرة سائلة بنثر حاد في خمس قصص، أجملها القصة الأساس.
من تعوّد على بورخيس وخصوصًا "المعجزة السرية" و"الدنو من المعتصم" سيحب هذا السرد.

Read this dreamy gem in a day and passed it on to my mom. Great book to read while falling in and out of consciousness. Beautiful writing. Surreal.
