"Hmm. Daredevil. I don't need saving. I'm right with God." -- John Walker, a.k.a. U.S. Agent

"If you were . . . he wouldn't have sent the devil." -- Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, talking tough

At times a little too slow-burn for my tastes - although I acknowledge this 'saga' is probably meant to unhurriedly unfold over its three-volume series - this introduction sets up an intriguing narrative. A reunited Daredevil and Elektra (although the latter receives scant page time until the final third of the storyline, despite being top-billed in the title) assembles an oddball antagonistic crew - shades of that old chestnut The Dirty Dozen - to train them for battling pure evil, or, as 'DD' defiantly yet loftily intones, "Whatever the sacrifices, whatever the heartbreak. I'm Daredevil - I'm going to fix the world.", which is course easier said than done in the oft-troubled Marvel Universe. As always the tortured vigilante's thoughtful concern for his friends and loved ones, plus his devout Catholic faith (guilt?), remain wonderful aspects of his character that help make him a cut above the usual costumed hero fare. The occasional crunchy action scenes - with punches and kicks to the head galore, amidst much leaping into the frame - also intermittently burst into the plot to keep things from getting too boring.

I haven’t read any Daredevil comics in years so I wondered if it would be difficult to pick up the current storyline- it wasn’t too bad. I really prefer DD to be operating in Hell’s Kitchen rather than grafting around the globe raising an army but it does seem to have some potential. Looking forward to the next volume.

--

EN This volume marks the beginning of a new chapter for Daredevil, in which he and Elektra set out to build "The Fist" as a counterforce to "The Hand".

As an introductory volume, it doesn't have the same narrative intensity as the previous ones, but it hints at promising developments.

Chip Zdarsky remains at the helm and, in my opinion, continues to do a solid job.

This was so good omg!

So we pick up with the aftermath of Devil's reign and the war to come with the Hand and Matt and Elektra preparing for it and I love how we switch to Matt wrapping things up with first with Butch as he is the new kingpin, the Stromwyns and what Mayor Luke does and knowing things will be well in NY, and then coming to the location of the "Fist" headquarters with new recruits and beginning life there and a massive status quo change omg and I freaking love it, one of he historic moments in Daredevil's publishing history and what happens next and how it may bring the Earth's mightiest heroes to the bold too and you know its gonna become epic with the Avengers involvement.

This was just so good and just propels the book to even epic levels like we get to see Matt slowly wrapping things up in his NY life ad in a way its closing the ch. for a while and showing the new status quo and the drama and new story telling it represents and then during the Fist saga we get to see what they do next and its amazing and epic and I love the

The art is amazing again, Marco is just getting better and better and each page is a treat to look at and I can't wait to reread it again someday. It just gets better every time with reread too and also I love the way Chip sets Punisher as the villain for the first arc and tying it with the Aaron Punisher book and can't wait for the Punisher vs Daredevil war to come and how it will be a massive challenge for him!

SO yeah a must read volume with epic action, great story telling!

This was another good book in the Daredevil/Chip Zdarsky series. It is just not what I was expecting. I thought there would be more ninja fighting, and in fairness later on in the book, there was some, but those parts seemed to be rushed over. As there was more concentration on the story, I could forgive this.

Daredevil had agreed to join Elektra as in the Fist. To oppose the Hand. However, Daredevil has a few things to sort out in New York as well as recruit a few people along the way. Old friends, allies, and enemies return. Prophecies will be fulfilled, and Daredevil will also realise just how scripted his life might have been.

A bit of a confusing back and forth in the timing of the "therapy" sessions Daredevil is giving to what is happening now and a little while later. That was the main reason I did not give this book five stars. I am looking forward to the battle promised in this book to be in the next book. The book finishes with a thumbnail variant cover gallery.

Chip continues Matt's Journey to fighting against evil.

This time it feels a bit more supernatural. We find out someone might have been causing all of Matt's pain on purpose, hurting him, using him, and making him go on the route he is on. It's a bold retcon like story that can either work or fall on its face. We shall see. But Matt and Elektra are both honing their skills, getting a upgrade in their powers, and ready to face the fist master...FRANK CASTLE.

This feels a lot more supernatural but not in a bad way. My favorite style of Daredevil is far more street level but it still works here mostly because Chip writes a compelling as hell Matt and Elektra. Their bond is strong, even if cracked in a lot of ways, and the fight their about to go into won't be easy.

Also how badass was watching Daredevil vs US Agent? So good.

A 4 out of 5.

4.25 stars. So I read the first two issues of this as they came out. I felt a bit unsure of where Zdarsky was going. Now that I’ve read the whole arc at once, I see it was slowly building up to a great arc. Once Matt wrapped all his loose ends in New York and dealt with learning about “Goldy”, he finally meets up with Elektra and their plan really starts unfolding. The plan they have put into motion has even gained the Avengers attention…….in a bad way. Man, I can’t wait for the next volume.

This was alright. I remain unconvinced that this is one of the best ongoing series, despite some pretty great volumes. Devil’s Reign was really derivative and this one was fun, but already off the rails. I like that it attempts to counter the macro perspective of DD’s run, because from that perspective (as most super hero arcs do now) it makes very little sense and has multiple same arcs play out. The new villain kind of tries to make how melodramatic and wild this character is make some sense, but I don’t know pointing to helps navigate it better. Time will tell.

As for the rest of it… it’s cool? Ninjas and this weird Matt loving two women thing at the same time feels, again, very melodramatic, but it gets by. Certainly not blowing me away though.

This volume may be one of the first with the art being consistent and not changing hands multiple times though; I appreciated that a great deal.

Daredevil & Elektra vol. 1: The Red Fist Saga

After the events of "Devil's Reign", Daredevil and Elektra decide to join forces and leave New York, to fight The Hand. In order to do that they resurrect a group called "The Fist". Before Daredevil leaves though, he wants to make sure that everything will be ok, in his beloved city. At first he's very worried, but he's reassured that he's leaving New York in good hands, when he sees the way Luke Cage acts as the new mayor. He's still worried about his beloved ones though, because of a horrifying villain, Goldy, who, in some ways, can control destiny. In order to protect Cole and Foggy and also gain from their abilities, he recruits them in The Fist and together they leave from The Big Apple. When he arrives at the headquarters, Daredevil finds out that Elektra has recruited Stick, to be one of the key figures in the group and he informs them that, according to the prophesy, there needs to be a king and a queen, to fight The Hand, so the two vigilantes get married.
This was a very nice volume. Chip Zdarsky's run so far has been amazing, with every arc being incredible. This one is no exception. Even though fewer things happen in this volume, than in the previous ones, it sets up what's to come in a great way and it makes the readers anticipate, with even more excitement, the final chapters of this historic run. Zdarsky's writing is exceptional. The dialogues and the narration are amazing and the way he's able to switch between narrators without any problem is impressive. Due to the heavy use of narration and Daredevil's "tortured" character, at times it feels like a neo-noir story, in the best ways possible. It's very interesting to see in this volume how Daredevil is torn between two women, Elektra and Kristen. I hope that there's gonna be a bigger focus on this triangle, in future volumes. It seems to me like in this volume, Daredevil and Elektra's relationship is not as good as it used to be. There's some kind of unspoken tension, especially from Daredevil's side. Furthermore, it's truly fascinating to see Daredevil facing Goldy, the only person that frightens the Man Without Fear. When you have a character that's not scared of anything and suddenly someone/thing scares him, it's extremely powerful and it immediately raises the stakes. I truly can't wait to see what's gonna happen between Daredevil and Goldy in the next volume. Moreover, this volume presents a very interesting dilemma. Goldy, thinking that he's following God's plan, informs Daredevil that in order to save the world, he'll have to suffer a huge personal loss. This scares Daredevil, but also makes the readers wonder, what would be the moral/"correct" thing to do. Sacrifice one's personal happiness, for a greater good, or leave things the way they are, in order to protect oneself? After facing this dilemma, Daredevil says that his whole life is like the train-tracks dilemma. But isn't that what all life is? A series of events where one has to choose between sacrificing something and saving/gaining something else. This kind of relatable problems is what makes Daredevil such an accessible and loveable character. Because we can all see ourselves in his misery.
The artwork by Marco Checchetto is incredible, as always. The way he draws Daredevil, with a very muscular body and a tired face, shows how scary he can be, but also how "tortured" and exhausted he is. The way he draws Elektra is also incredible. She always looks gorgeous, with the highlight being her magnificent, curly hair. Everything looks great when it's drawn by Checchetto. A fight scene is epic, a dialogue is captivating and a kiss is romantic. I think that his artwork has been a perfect fit for this great run.
Overall, this was yet another great volume, in this amazing run. Maybe a bit slower than I expected it to be, but still great.

Now DD goes messianic and wants to "fix the world". With the Fist. Against the Hand.
Oh, and he’s "married" with Elektra btw.
And before that, a retcon throws in a guy who somehow kind of manipulated Matt’s life through all the tragic events we know to make him a better warrior. For God.

I’m not really sure I like the way this is going to. Ninja shit I can handle. Divine prophecies... mmh... let’s say I’m reserved for now.

Art is still great. Checchetto is definitely one of these artists who’ve left their mark on the character.
And I swear he draws the most beautiful Elektra ever.

Another killer chapter in Zdarsky & Checchetto’s run — packed with energy, character depth, and sharp storytelling. Matt and Elektra’s partnership deepens as they assemble a new team and take their commitment to the next level (literally). Stylish, emotional, and a blast from start to finish.

After the Devil's Reign saw Kingpin defeated, Daredevil and Elektra decide to focus their attention on growing The Fist so they can defeat The Hand. What a weird sentence to write.

This is a similarly weird book to read. Instead of digging right into the Fist/Hand stuff, we get a couple issues of Daredevil battling his old district attorney pal Goldy, who has been apparently possessed by God to pull the strings of Daredevil's life. Uhhhh what? Talk about a plot point that's straight out of nowhere.

Fortunately, the Goldy stuff is quickly dropped in favor of generic recruitment and training scenes for The Fist. You've seen this all before, except now it has loads of dour voiceover.

What was the point of resetting back to issue 1 if this is still gonna be volume 8 like what is wrong with Marvel for this. 😭 I'm glad the run by this team goes on and we are getting into a new arc but pls stop with the stupid numbering I beg you.

After Devil's Reign Daredevil has left his identity Matt Murdock for dead and has left New York. He's finally joined with Elektra and Stick on their journey to destroy the Hand by forming the Fist. (Who names these things for real.)

I did really enjoy this but I think most of what I enjoyed was how much Daredevil / Elektra content we get lol. King and Queen absolutely hell yes I was screaming and I love their relationship so much. I want to just enjoy what they have right now and where they are because I know it is going too well and soon will go down in flames.

It really speaks to me that Elektra based her Daredevil costume on her original and his and now he comes around with a matching one based on her Daredevil costume like??? I love it thank you and they look so good together.

As for the plot... I don't really like it. My favorite thing of Daredevil is balancing his lawyer life with vigilante life but this has completely left behind one side of him (and his beloved city) into all of this ancient mystical magic shit. At least this is being done well but I'm gonna cheer when he accepts Matt Murdock back into his life.

God I love the art so much. It switches a few times (not including the issue where it brought back artists from past Daredevil runs because that was cool as shit) but it manages to keep the same style and that style is gorgeous.

I'm a big fan but I desperately wish comics came out faster because reading one a month is killing me.

When Zdarsky and Checchetto wrapped Devil's Reign, they basically capped off their run. So the fact it continues is both exciting and feels like they are playing with house money.

Matt trys to start thinking bigger, and as he and Elektra take a very important next step, one I would love more if it sticks, is exciting for what this could be leading too. It's not as high a bar, but we somewhat starting from scratch

I have to give Zdarsky credit for creating a truly epic Daredevil tale, if you take in his entire run. This volume starts a new chapter in the saga as Daredevil and Elektra becomes the leaders of a ninja group known as The First, created to oppose the Hand. Considering the Punisher is now leading the hand (which wasn't a plot twist I agreed with btw,) I think the next volume is going to get very interesting. I will say I'm not a big fan of the "Goldy" subplot. (I won't get into it here due to spoilers, but it's sort of silly thing going on that you'd have to read to understand.)

Overall good story with good art, very interested in the next volume.

Chip Zdarsky has been doing wonders with his run on Daredevil, in which the status quo was always changing when it came to the life of Matt Murdock, whether it was him giving up the costume after killing someone, or his assassin lover Elektra becoming the Woman Without Fear. Along with artist Marco Checchetto, Zdarsky concluded with the event Devil’s Reign, serving as a climax to the Wilson Fisk conflict that played a huge part in the Daredevil title, whilst paving the way for future storylines such as Zdarsky and Checchetto’s current run.

Relaunched with a new #1, this is a continuation of the story that the creators have been telling from the beginning. As Matt and Elektra continue to take on the Daredevil mantle, the former has no choice but to leave behind everything he’s ever known, including his home of Hell’s Kitchen, whilst his fellow costumed heroes ensure him that New York will be safe without him. However, before taking the world stage of leading the Fist to eradicate evil, Matt has some loose ends to wrap up.

The first two issues are about Matt trying to say goodbye to his ex-girlfriend Kirsten McDuffie, only for disaster to strike, and he is confronted by former ADA Robert “Goldy” Goldman, who has made some appearances in Zdarsky’s run with little hints of importance, but now we see the whole picture. Not only does Goldy have abilities but has religious vibes to match Matt’s reasoning. Essentially one long action sequence, greatly realised by Checchetto’s luscious art, whilst Zdarsky delivering a heavy dose of Matt’s trademark monologues. The second issue is actually the milestone #650, features plenty of guest artists who gets to shine with splash pages that highlight their impacts on the Daredevil title, such as Alex Maleev, Chris Samnee and John Romita Jr.

As for other loose ends, Quinn and Una Stromwyn continue to be horrible people that Matt has dealt with prior, though the recently elected mayor Luke Cage knows how to handle them, much to Matt’s relief. Following a confrontation with Elektra’s former mentor Aka, Matt realises that not everyone from his life will be safe and so he takes Foggy and Detective Cole North to the snowy mountains where they will be among the Fist, who are preparing a war against the Hand.

Taking Daredevil out of the crime-ridden New York and more into the realm of supernatural ninjas feels like the next step for the character, whilst honouring what came before, notably when Frank Miller was doing during his iconic run. While you have Daredevil and Elektra being declared as king and queen of the reformed Fist, which also means they are now married, there is the possibility of exploring more of the Fist’s members, such as Leonard Samson/Doc Sasquatch.

This volume features the art-styles of Checchetto and Rafael de Latorre, the latter of which drew Daredevil: Woman Without Fear. Whilst Checchetto (only drawing the first two issues) continues to make the title a visual feast, de Latorre’s style isn’t as flourish, but he improves as he goes on and evoking a lot of aesthetics that his predecessor achieves, particularly the last issue that is a well-crafted prison break sequence. Among the numerous changes in the status quo, a bearded Matt Murdock is now rocking a ninja-styled DD costume, which is awesome.

This is ultimately the calm before the storm that is “The Red Fist Saga”, but an exciting read that continues the high quality that Zdarsky has delivering throughout his time on Daredevil.

This is just some good stuff. Zdarsky picks up again after Devil's Reign. I was curious to see where he'd take Daredevil and Elektra. He's managed to pivot a few times during his run and I've liked nearly all of them. This volume manages to both tie-up some loose ends from the previous stories and vault Daredevil and Elektra into a much larger story. I'm very excited that Elektra isn't sidelined here.

There aren't that many bad runs on Daredevil but this one has been more successful than most at evolving the character. I'm excited to see what Zdarsky has left on the story front. Marco Checchetto is back on pencils and does a great job. There's also an over-sized issue #650 included here that has some fan favorites coming in for a series of pages. It's just a really well-done book.

After the excellent "Daredevil" run, capped with the singular "Devil's Reign", Zdarsky strikes again. This time the Man without Fear is accompanied by Elektra, the Femme Fatale of Hell's Kitchen. Together they have their work cut for them. With the Hand on the loose, Murdock resorts to the ancient methods of the Fist. Or at least so he thinks, as he is starting to realize that the plan that he is concocting may have already been there waiting for him. Enter Goldy, whose mere presence probes fate, destiny, and puts the very notion of free will on trial. If the previous books were any indication, the reader is up for another wildly satisfying ride.

(3.5 rounded up)

“Daredevil & Elektra” Volume 1 picks up after the events of “Devil’s Reign”, with Matt and Elektra both portraying Daredevil and them leading “The Fist” to take down The Hand. While I found Devil’s Reign to be a bit disappointing, Chip Zdarsky has nonetheless done some great work with the character(s) of Daredevil so I am eager to see how he ends his tenure as Daredevil’s lead writer in these last few volumes.

The first part of this volume is mostly dealing with Matt wrapping things up in Hell’s Kitchen and dealing with the aftermath of Devil’s Reign. This was fine and had some nice moments like Matt and Spidey reaffirming their bond. It did drag a bit like the volume as a whole but there were some neat story beats. The character of Goldy, Matt’s old classmate and “Guardian Angel” was an interesting one to say the least, as was his ability to cause chain reactions to get desired outcomes for himself and Daredevil on behalf of “God”. Its kind of retcon-y having Goldy be indirectly responsible for conditions that allowed events in Matt’s life to play out (i.e., leaving a door open that lets a gangster escape and go to the FBI with Daredevil’s true identity). But I am interested to see where Zdarsky takes this storyline. Plus I liked how Goldy’s presence led to Issue 2 having a phenomenal montage of old Daredevil stories that he influenced with corresponding art from those runs’ artists.

The rest of the volume is devoted to magic ninja antics split between recruiting/training warriors (and Foggy) for The Fist and a prison break. It’s overall decent content, particularly a fight between Matt and US Agent and Matt and Elektra technically getting married (Zdarsky kind of undersells the moment). For whatever reason though the Daredevils taking on a cave full of zombie ghost warriors wasn’t as exciting as I hoped and in general the section and volume as a whole felt like set-up.

In general though this first volume of “Daredevil and Elektra” was one of Zdarsky’s weaker entries but nonetheless still a solid volume with some good moments and quotes (particularly one quote by Matt about himself, “Is my entire life the trolley problem?”). I’m hoping the next volume picks up but overall this was an entertaining one.

So sorry everyone but was there any buildup to this? My thoughts are all over the place because I read ahead but let me bullet point.

- definitely stretching here but I like how when Aka threatened Matt and told him that regardless of if he’s ally or enemy, he’d still help the Hand, Matt’s fingers were shaded, making them look vaguely like claws.
- was anyone going to tell me Stick was alive, or was I supposed to find that out myself?
- So Frank succeeds Matt as The Beast (you know, the biblical helper to The Devil) years after the Hand cult had killed and possessed Matt, and Matt goes under some ritual that gives him the exact same position in the copycat of the Hand cult. And he does NOT hesitate to take it up, especially when his CHILDHOOD ABUSER is the one performing the ceremony. Just to fight Frank. I guess it wasn’t the exact same since it’s more a neutralizer to the Beast, and the ability is spread across everyone in Matt’s funtime cult, but I don’t know, if I was Matt, I would not do this. This sounds like a horrible idea.
- so dad Matt confess to his ex-gf or not? It really isn’t clear
- Avengers will be like “we gotta intervene” and then just don’t
- I’m just like Goldy for real (worshipping Matt)

I was very disappointed in this new restart for the Daredevil saga, which pulls him out of New York City (an important character in any DD story), and marries him off to Elektra as they form a new secret organization called The Fist to combat the evil secret organization called The Hand that spawned both of them. Yuck. Throw in a new villain called “Goldy,” who is basically The Purple Man with the same powers of suggestion only a different color (and who, it's now revealed, may have been manipulating DD's life for YEARS), overly religious tones, disappointing artwork (I normally love Checchetto’s work, but he only does two of the five issues compiled here and they seem lackluster at best), and I find myself on the fence about continuing with the next trade collection a few months down the road. It’s a shame … I’ve really enjoyed Zdarksy’s take on this character, but maybe Devil’s Reign should have been his swan song. I fear it’s time for someone else to tackle the Man Without Fear for Marvel.
