Uroczy, zabawny, czuły, pełen miłości i ciepła i humoru - Ocean miłości jest jednym z najbardziej poruszających komiksów powstałych w Europie w XXI wieku.
Wydawnictwo Mandioca ma zaszczyt, przyjemność i nieukrywaną radość wydać jeden z najukochańszych komiksów jaki kiedykolwiek mieliśmy okazję zobaczyć.
Wilfrid Lupano is a French comics writer. Born in Nantes, he spent most of his childhood in Pau. Growing up, he buried himself in his parents’ comics-book collection, and his wild imagination and interest in writing stems from a love of role-playing games.
As a young adult Lupano worked as a server to finance his studies in philosophy and English. With his friends and creative partners, Roland Pignault and Fred Campoy, he created the humorous western Little Big Joe, among other works.
Make way for the cutest comic of the year thus far, everyone. This is also so lushly and gorgeously illustrated that I couldn't pass it up!
I love love love comics with no words in them. Simply because it tells a story similar to a small movie, and must rely only on show and not tell.
The Sea of Love: And you think babies are cute. Just look at this old man!
It begins when an old man gets a lovely breakfast, presumably from his wife and then turns on his radio to hear about the weather. I just LOVE how the medium of silence is used. There is so much more emotion to look for in the characters' eyes and so much to deduce from the environment.
The antics between husband and wife are so sweet and serene at the beginning. She packs him his lunch and sends him off to his fishing trip. This is a story of their simple life - their simple love and the sea.
I can't refrain form praising this artwork over and over! It's just lovely.
And so, the Old Man sets off on his boat with his friend, who I'll name Young Man since this is a silent comic, you know. Whenver the Old Man doubts himself, he looks at his tin that says "Sea of Love". They continue to catch nothing at all.
This book begins to highlight the troubles of large fish-catching ships and how they take everything away from not just the ecosystem, but from the little guys like Old Man and Young Man. They also have to scramble for safety from the large, looming ship.
The Old Man lets the Young Man escape on a small lifeboat. His wife awaits to give him dinner, but he does not return.
And so begins the Old Man's adventure. And he faces so many fears - including his fear of swimming. The transitions are so beautifully illustrated. He begins to despair, but finally eats the tin of sardines that gives him hope. We also see the worst that we do to our planet.
I won't spoil much more of the story (other than it all leads to Cuba and turns into an almost country-wide struggle), but it's absolutely wonderful. It shows the tenacity of an old couple to never give up hope for each other and always keep that love in their hearts. This is the kind of love I want to see in books - old love that still stays true.
This has got to be one of my favourite comics of this year - it's wonderfully illustrated and beautifully written, albeit without words. I loved the Old Man and his Wife so much - their charm and sweetness seeped from every page.
I cannot stress how the love of these two for each other knows no bounds. The adventures that both husband and wife go through are awesome; their characters develop and they learn (and teach) so much. This is also a story about how helping one person, however close, can cascade into helping so many others. And also how special routine can be in a good relationship.
I received this comic from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
What I like about wordless graphic novels is that there's no need for characters' dialogues to be able to convey what they want to say; readers only need to check out the illustrations to be able to decipher the flow of the story. And Sea of Love did easily convey the narrative that it wants to reveal by just only checking out the drawings. This is the second worldless graphic novel that I came across and was really entertained by the tale of a married couple from a small village who both had amazing adventures while they were both on the sea. I am amazed by the wife's unwavering hope and the husband's uncanny friendship with a bird while he was stranded alone. The story of the couple will remind us of how powerful love is and to never give up amidst struggles. Another great aspect of this one-shot graphic novel is how it briefly mentioned the problem of pollution in the environment. I'm happy that I have the chance to read this marvelous material and I'll definitely recommend this to my fellow readers, especially those who are into graphic novels.
A Sea of Love is an amusing wordless graphic novel with utterly gorgeous illustrations.
Each morning a doting wife sends her frail-seeming old fisherman of a husband off to work. One day things go a bit astray for the husband when his boat gets tangled up in the lines of an enormous ship.
One thing leads to another and he finds himself a adrift and alone at sea. Concerned when he doesn't return home, his wife refuses to give up hope that she'll find him, and eventually she hops on board a cruise liner to go find him.
Alternating between the husband and wife, we see the story slowly unfold as each spouse tries to find their way home to each other. The lovely illustrations made this a joy to read and the wordless story means that just about anyone of any age might enjoy this.
Thanks to NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for a free DRC of this book.
An older man leaves his wife and goes out fishing in his small boat as he does every morning, and his boat gets caught in the net of a large fishing trawler. Thus begins an increasingly silly adventure for the man as he attempts to get home. His wife, desperate to find her husband, gets caught up in her own adventure as she also struggles to make it back home. The feel at the end is romantic comedy, sweet: A Sea of Love, get it?! The depiction of the characters is sometimes a little too cartoony/goofy for me; it's essentially a shaggy dog story, which is just fine.
This is a silent comic about the adventures of an old man who gets lost in the sea and his wife who goes on a journey to find him. It starts with the daily routine of the couple. The little details made me smile. The way the wife packs the same food every day and the man hides his dislike made me chuckle.
The man leaves for fishing and his boat gets caught in a big fishing trawler. We see him face one hardship after another while trying to return home. The wife first worries and waits for his return and then goes to the police. When that doesn't work out, she consults an astrologer who points her to Cuba. She decides to rescue him despite being prone to seasickness.
The characters reminded me of some couples from older generations where the man risks his life to put food on the table and the woman has many hidden talents that she considers ordinary but people from a different culture or generation would marvel at her skills.
I liked the art and the colour palette. The cover's colour and the glossy effect reminds me of a sour lemon candy sold in my place called pulippu mittai (which is coincidentally fitting because lemons were used by sailors to prevent/cure scurvy). The portrayal of flashback scenes in a character's mind was interesting.
Overall, this was a heartwarming read that will make you smile.
A pointless, wordless comic about a man lost at sea and his wife that goes to Cuba to find him on the word of a fortune teller. The art and storytelling are awful. I often couldn't understand why things were happening.
Received a review copy from Lion Forge and Edelweiss. All thoughts are my own and in now way influenced by the aforementioned.
This was an entirely graphic novel with all pictures and no words. A fisherman goes out in the morning and ends up lost at sea while his wife waits for him. Everyone is convinced he’s dead, but she insists on going out to find him. He encounters a huge industrial fishing trawler, ends up captured by pirates, then rescued by other pirates. One of the main secondary characters is a seagull he saves from a 6-pack ring. Definitely some environmental statements going on including an oil spill and crap tons of garbage in the water. While all of this is going on for the poor husband, the wife has fairly fun adventures on a cruise ship and becoming a fashion icon.
Overall, I did enjoy this story and thought the husband and wife’s relationship to be very touching. I also loved the seagull!
I received a copy of this story via Netgalley and have provided a review of my own accord.
Gorgeous, just gorgeous illustrations Nearly totally wordless.
This is the story of a fisherman who gets tangled in a commercial net, and gets sent off course. His wife has not given up on him, and has gone in search of him, though she has been told he is lost at sea.
The women of the village dress in the traditional costumes, I suppose, as a hint that they might be subservient, but the fisherman's wife goes through so much to find him, so she is quite strong.
Enjoyable story. Little guy vs cooperation. Wife vs. politicians.
#ASeaOfLove #NetGalley Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
I haven't read many wordless graphic novels, so I was very glad to have gotten my hands on an eBook copy of "A Sea of Love".
Since there isn't any dialogue, it was a super fast read (and there isn't very much to say about it), but was easy to understand and the graphics were beautiful. I love Panaccione's art style, and I had a full understanding of what was going on even without any words.
A Sea of Love is a fun, heartwarming read about fate, adventure, and the fight for love.
EN This is the kind of book that lingers on my shelves, waiting for just the right moment to be picked up.
Creating a silent graphic novel is no easy feat, but this one achieves perfection.
Everything about it is outstanding, from the vibrant colors to the masterfully crafted narrative. It's a book that's impossible not to love—undoubtedly one of the year's best.

A wonderful book that discusses the status of our world’s oceans and fishing through the quiet tale of a man trying to return home. What it reminded me of throughout was the movie Up, in the bizarre journey and friends you meet along the way.
Lovely coloring throughout and while I wish the two main characters (am not counting the bird, although it was my favorite) had been a bit less cartoony in their proportions, as it somehow made me worry less for them.
