Sie hat u. a. einen Jugendkrimi, diverse Kurzgeschichten und mehrere Shadowrun-Romane veröffentlicht, bevor sie mit Die Feen ihr erstes großes Fantasy-Epos schrieb. Die Autorin lebt mit ihrem Mann und ihrem gemeinsamen Kind in Hamburg.

Das ist wohl wahr, "Vertigo" ist kein typischer Shadowrun-Roman. Die Frage ist eher, ob jeder Shadowrun-Roman vor Testosteron triefen muss.
Klar, hat das Buch was von einem Mädchenroman, aber das ist nur konsequent von der Autorin, da sie eine Ich-Persepktive eines Mädels Anfang zwanzig gewählt hat. Wieso soll es solche Leute nicht in den Schatten geben? Die Sechste Welt ist ja nicht nur mit männlichen Desperados bevölkert. Und Vertigo ist trotz allem eine Vollblut-Runnerin, inklusive fieser Einbrüche, Gewaltbereitschaft und Paranoia. Die Sichtweise einer Katzenschamanin ist auch sehr gelungen. Daher Hut ab vor Maike Hallmann, dass sie eine solche Figur aufs Parket gebracht hat.
Ich finde es außerdem ganz erfrischend, dass es einen Runner gibt, der noch Kontakte zu der heilen Welt in Form seiner Familie hat, und dabei ist es unerheblich, dass der Runner weiblich ist.
Natürlich nervt Vertigo und kriegt im Privatleben nichts auf die Reihe, aber man kann sich herrlich darüber amüsieren, dass sie so schön blöd ist (vielleicht aber nur, wenn man mal selber ein blödes Gör gewesen ist und bereit ist das Buch nicht zu ernst zu nehmen? Ich finde es unterhaltsam).
Die Handlung finde ich eigentlich ganz OK, wenngleich sie doch ein wenig von der Gefühlswelt der Protagonistin in den Hintergrund gedrängt wird (dafür dann doch den einen Stern Abzug).
Fazit: Ein Shadowrun-Roman, der nicht nur Action, sondern auch ein wenig Romanze hat, die wohlgemerkt eher in Schlägerei (oder Androhung solcher) als in Kuscheln zum Ausdruck kommt, dem Flair der Sechsten Welt tut es keinen Abbruch.
Außerdem gibt es ein paar viel versprechende Cross-Overs zu den Anderen Bücher von Fr. Hallmann. Z.B. was hat es denn mit Juan und Jaywalker auf sich? Ich warte auf einen vierten Band. Bitte!

Strange book.
For starters, it's about 50% too long. While a lot happens, very little actually advances the plot. Padding makes up the bulk of this book, with characters essentially walking on stage, delivering a scene, and disappearing again after having said their lines. What's the point of Deus Ex Machina's, if they don't resolve anything? This is the only book I've read in this line, so maybe the walk-ons are references to characters from other books, but I've no inclination to find out.
The protagonist has no character arc to speak of, and has an internal monologue which is very incongruous with how we're meant to perceive her. This results in a dislike for her, which is unfortunate because the protagonist is not exactly a deep character to begin with.
That said, you do get a "slice of life" of the Sixth World, but it's the barely enough to wet the appetite. Aside from some passing references to cyber and magic, this could have easily been rewritten to the modern day. A description of a street-sam putting a gun to his one-night-stand's head even before he's fully awake is great, but it's hard to find more than a handful of these examples.
It's a testament to Hallmann's writing ability that I finished this book in spite of its many flaws.
