A little neglected in our time, the Victorian era produced a great quantity of beautiful poetry. This excellent collection, sadly out of print, extends a little into the 20th Century.
Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch was a Cornish writer, who published under the pen name of Q. He is primarily remembered for the monumental "Oxford Book of English Verse 1250-1900" (later extended to 1918), and for his literary criticism. He guided the taste of many who never met him, including American writer Helene Hanff, author of 84 Charing Cross Road, its sequel, Q's Legacy, and the putatively fictional Horace Rumpole via John Mortimer, his literary amanuensis.
I found this battered volume at the RMIT University when they were giving away old books to clear their shelves. It was free so I picked it up out of curiosity. There are famous and wonderful poets in there: Arnold, Barrett-Browning, but also many excellent poets I had never heard of. A good book from a great era.
