Simply Mediterranean Cooking reveals to the reader where the world's best food can be found - from the Mediterranean. And once you've sampled the extraordinary dishes in this book, you'll find it impossible to disagree.
Fabulous variety, both in ingredients and methodology, but I think the word, "simple," in the title is very misleading as some of these recipes are anything but simple. The notes make it clear that some of these are simplified from traditional versions, using, for example, skinless chicken in place of a whole chicken, and others are not truly Mediterranean but only in the Mediterranean style (Braised Endive and Tomato Gratinée, for example). There's no nutrition information provided (not unusual for cookbooks these days), no indicators of prep or cooking time, and very few photos (14 for 101 recipes). The authors, aware that some of these ingredients are quite pricy, have scaled down many recipes to serve 2 (Flash-Fried Red Snapper with Green Onions, for example). The only information that accompanies each recipe is the suggested number of servings and some notes regarding one of the ingredients and/or the origins of the recipe which are interesting in their own right. Overall, a very nice addition to any collection of recipe books, but if your goal is to follow the Mediterranean diet for its health benefits, you'll only use this to add some variety.
I love the 'Simply' series, but have had difficulty finding a recipe that I care for in this book. If I come across something I like, maybe I will upgrade my review, but until then, this was a solid 3 stars.
