I read this book and finished it actually quite a while ago and it was an invaluable resource for writing parts of my dissertation. Besides that it's also genuinely a really wonderful read with reference to all sorts of excellent concept art, costume design and quotes from all areas of the team who worked on the Lord of the Rings films. I have to say I am very happy that I own the next one in this series too because it's very through and a really beautiful book to read thorough and discover so much about the process behind the film.
I definitely loved the way that the chapters were divided up as it made it easy to find pages relevant to areas such as props, races, particular character etc and I thought that the way it was all tied together with images, screen-grabs, paintings and other essential elements really showed the story of exactly how these films were made and how much work and consideration went into every detail. Overall a solid 4*s :)

This is obviously the first of the trilogy (I will be writing them up one after another since I was lucky enough to pick them up as a set). Now at the time of the films release (which I guess was repeated with the release of the subsequent two sequels) there was so much material released about the film, the story even about Tolkien himself it seemed you could not look through the front door of a book shop without seeing something about Lord of the Rings.
However now after a number of years (including the release of the Hobbit) attention has moved on elsewhere and the draw of the books has diminished, at least it has for those who are not diehard fans or people who appreciate a good book.
So the books are about the art of the films - from concept to final design with the odd production shot thrown in for good measure. There is a treasure trove of art here which as I have stated on many occasion, without the presence of a book like this probably would never see the light of day. Which to me in criminal considering the hours talented people have put in to their production.
So for me this book spans the gap from the visual delights of the film to the classic art of the book, both from its cover and the art it has inspired over the years. You see for me the film imagery made the story its own and yet there seems to be such familiarity in every scene and this book captures that essence.
So like many a book of this type it appeals to the fan of the film as well as those who know and love the story that gave it life. This book is one of those titles you could go to time after time and find something new every time.

The Art of The Fellowship of the Ring is one of the three art books for The Lord of the Rings. The other two being The Art of the Two Towers and The Art of the Return of the King. Also available in one condensed edition of these three art books is The Art of the Lord of the Rings.
The review you read here will be roughly the same as the ones for other books.
The three volume collects over 500 images each, consisting pencils sketches, paintings and sculptures. These are the art from conceptual to execution stage. The principal designers are Alan Lee, Paul Lasaine, John Howe, Grant Major, Richard Taylor (head of Weta Workshop) and Nigila Dickson among other talented artists. A full list of credits is provided.
The books focus on the set and environment designs of the various Middle-earth locations, including character and creature designs from the region. While there are also weapon designs, you should turn to The Lord of the Rings Weapons and Warfare for more comprehensive coverage.
The commentary and depth of the books are great. There are captions for every sketch and illustration provided, both from the artists and Gary Russell. These includes the various iterations from the discarded to the final designs used in the movies. The artists talk about the English and European influence on their sets and architecture, compositing photos and matte painting, techniques used to create the rich and seemingly authentic world, costume designs and other elements of the film.
The books provide a great insight into the amount of art and details required to produce a movie — three actually — of such massive scale. What you don't see in this book is talk on the production aspect, which is left to The Making of the Movie Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings Official Movie Guide.
The Art of the Lord of the Rings art book series is a great resource for fans as well as fantasy artists.

If you had the power of the most powerful ring that could save your life would use it, even if it could kill you. Lord Of The Rings is a great series especially fellowship of the ring. Fellowship Of The Ring is mainly about trying to destroy the ring that created all.
Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, and so many other main characters, set off on a adventure to get rid of the one ring that controls all. A man by the name of Sauron put a majority of his power into this one ring. But Gandalf is afraid that the ring is going back to the dark lord a.k.a Sauron. After Frodo leaves the shire home to the hobbits he is pursued by 9 dark horsemen or Ringwraiths. After they discover this the head to the old forest and quickly become lost without the guidance of Gandalf the grey since he went on an urgent mission to the south. Luckily they run into a man named Tom which leads them out of the forest over several nights. After they the forest they meet this majestic man named strider. Frodo doesn’t know strider and he wants to take them off the beaten path after hearing stories of the ringwraiths. Frodo was not so foolish until the the innkeeper gave them an important letter, that was left by Gandalf many months ago that convinced Frodo to leave. Strider becomes a epic ranger in the story and saves Frodo, Sam, and two others many times. After this they go to an elvish council and decide as a group what to do with the ring. Frodo leaves the Elvish city and sets outward toward Mordor.
The personal connection to this book was the balance between good and evil. I say this because the ring is the most beautiful ring and always stays shiny but put it on and you slowly become a different person. I thought this book did live up to its promise because it’s a great start so far of the trilogy and don’t see it slowing down. The book does have really boring parts but those building parts build into amazing scenes so the long read is worth the wait. This was a great book and I will finish the rest of the series
This book is a good read for any fiction lover, the book is completely different to what is out there today. The book is an easy read at only 398 pages and time flies by while reading it. IF you want a good read READ THIS BOOK!

I read this at the same time I am reading The Making of Return of the Jedi. They have different goals, but it is hard not to compare them while reading both at the same time. Unfortunately for this book, it really suffered in comparison. The Star Wars book would meticulously work through iterations of ideas and the method of how they would be realized on screen. This book mostly showed sketches and sometimes would say something like, "and the lighting would be adjusted in Photoshop." A lot of the stuff had kind of throw-away lines about Photoshop.
One of the most fascinating/disappointing aspects of the book was the portion where they actually discussed some of the non-Photoshop work they did. The best was how they would take pictures all over New Zealand and take pieces they liked to create backgrounds for scenes in the movie. One that I remember is when Gandalf is riding towards Isengard. That foreground was real, but all of the background beyond the trees was made up of about 8 different images from all over New Zealand. That's awesome. It would've been far better if they had shown us those 8 images in their original form, which portions of those images they cut out, and then the final image from the movie. That is the kind of work I expected from this book. It is still interesting reading the very short description of what they did, but actually seeing the different images would've been 10x better.
Some of the descriptions were nice and offered glimpses of how the process worked and what they considered when coming up with the ideas, but most were very superficial.
I would recommend this book to LOTR fans and I would say check it out from the library if you can. The artwork is nice, but the asking price of $35 is pretty steep for what you are getting. Comparing again the the Star Wars book, that asking price was $85, but it felt more than justified because it is an exhaustive tome with incredible in depth details of pretty much every step of the process. This book felt more like a collection of cool sketches.

Found on sale for £1.50 in a charity shop by my wife and son and bought as a surprise for me, it's likely an indication of how good the book is that my son has now nicked it off me. Kindly, he let me keep it long enough to actually read and enjoy it.
Obviously, the vast majority of the book is taken up with sketches, designs and production photographs but the accompanying captions are fascinating. After years of seeing people banging on about the amazing landscapes in New Zealand, it's interesting to see just how many of those tourism-driving wide shots are based on composite shots and matte paintings. You're a fraud, New Zealand tourist industry!!
Around half of the book is devoted to the film's locations and set design but to me, the most interesting are the character sketches and the maquettes for the orcs, trolls, Uruk-Hai and the Balrog. I might even get to re-read it sometime, assuming it ever emerges from the Mordorian chaos of my son's bedroom.

I was surprised to find out that this book has received a rating of 4.6. The plot is fantastic, no doubt about that; however, the amount of description given greatly deterred me from reading the book with as much enthusiasm as I saw the movie with, later. The monotonous writing style became tedious after a while leading me to skim over entire paragraphs. This is one of the very few examples of the movie being better than the book it's based on.

Luego de muchos años Bilbo Bolsón le encomienda a su parentesco Frodo a custodiar el anillo único, sin embargo este no sabe toda la aventura que se le avecina, llena de persecución y desesperación para lograr el objetivo de esta magistral aventura. Además J.R.R Tolkien nos introducirá en un mundo de fantasía increíble el cual está muy bien sustentado y argumentado, la implementación de nuevos personajes llenos de curiosidades y preguntas hace que la lectura se convierta más intrigante cada vez que avanzas. Es la primera vez que leo fantasía y creo que comencé con el correcto ya que este autor me presento y demostró que la imaginación no tiene límites.
La guerra del anillo se convirtió en una Trilogía muy exitosa, sin embargo luego de acabar de leer el Hobbit, decidí a encaminarme a explorar más este mundo fantástico ya que los comentarios que había escuchado al respecto de estos libros me cautivaron a querer leerlos, pues vaya sorpresa que me he llevado ya que quede encantado, quizás se me hizo un poco tedioso la primera parte del libro, sin embargo me di cuenta que esta era necesaria para la sustentación y argumentación de todos lo que compone este mundo “La Tierra Media”, es un libro con una narrativa muy sencilla y es fácil de comprender.
La guerra del anillo se convirtió en una Trilogía muy exitosa, sin embargo luego de acabar de leer el Hobbit, decidí a encaminarme a explorar más este mundo fantástico ya que los comentarios que había escuchado al respecto de estos libros me cautivaron a querer leerlos, pues vaya sorpresa que me he llevado ya que quede encantado, quizás se me hizo un poco tedioso la primera parte del libro, sin embargo me di cuenta que esta era necesaria para la sustentación y argumentación de todos lo que compone este mundo “La Tierra Media”, es un libro con una narrativa muy sencilla y es fácil de comprender.

This book was not for me.
It's mostly just pictures of early artwork for all aspects of the first movie.
So if you are really interested in the details of how different concepts evolved or perhaps if you are an artist yourself or just a LOTR super fan you may find it interesting.
But personally I don't think I got that much out of it. It's just a lot of sketches of things that I already saw in the movies and I am no artist or super fan.
It is however a nice reminder of all the work that goes into making a movie like Lord of the Rings. An entire world has to be imagined which is an enormous amount of work that requires a huge team of talented artists.
Peter Jackson obviously couldn't have generated all these ideas by himself and I think casual movie goers sometimes forget that a big part of what they actually see in the final film originated from the minds of concept artists and production designers who don't get that much glory.
Couple of notable images:
(1) An early concept drawing of The Company showing Frodo, Gimli, Legolas, Gandalf and Aragorn by Alan Lee (page 6)
It's the very first picture in the book. Except for Gimli they all look very different than they do in the movies.
(2) An alternative idea for the Argonath statues by John Howe (page 88)
The Argonath statues are one of the most iconic shots in the entire trilogy, it's interesting to see another version which looks "more Northern European".
It's mostly just pictures of early artwork for all aspects of the first movie.

The lord of the rings and the game of thrones lore reminds me of why I need to fight to stay alive. The world isn't worth living when I read every single one of these books and thought it was going to get better even though the first book already sent me into psychosis and I saw the light of god.

Nó but serious as someone who has OCD and 5 kids this doesn't want me to light a candle and drink a glass of wine, instead this book series makes me want to drink 8 litres of gasoline and sprinkle some in my beige coloured home and light it up into flames. So disappointing. This franchise was more disappointing than when I went into my kids school and found out they were buttfucking each other behind the bikesheds.
I am ashamed.

Nó but serious as someone who has OCD and 5 kids this doesn't want me to light a candle and drink a glass of wine, instead this book series makes me want to drink 8 litres of gasoline and sprinkle some in my beige coloured home and light it up into flames. So disappointing. This franchise was more disappointing than when I went into my kids school and found out they were buttfucking each other behind the bikesheds.
I am ashamed.

I am almost through the book- 4 chapters left!
The only thing that I despise and adore about J.R.R Tolkien is his love of description and the language he uses. The book draws on with no need for certain description and needs of description, but the language draws you in and hooks you to the setting, characters, and theme.
Though it may also be because I saw the movie before actually diving into the literary world of the hobbits, I enjoy the creativity that rushes from the pages like waves (pun hehehe).
I am excited to get through the first and continue on with the rest.
(I have read The Hobbit (prequel) and loved it and will probably love this one as well)

La verdad que para los fans de Tolkien, de P Jackson y todo lo relacionado con El Señor De Los Anillos estos libros son impresionantes pero si encima, como yo misma, has estudiado bachillerato de arte son la reostia. Algunos apartados son mas interesantes que otros .El apartado de lugares son unas imágenes que te desean estar allí!, el vestuario te demuestra lo mega currados que están todos los detalles, las armas a mi es que me flipan y para mi el mas aburrido son las criaturas porque te enseñan doce mil orcos y veinte mil balrog...pero aún así los espectros y algunos mas son dignos de mencionar. Le doy un cinco y porque no tengo mas!!!

The Fellowship of the Ring is a great book with likable characters and I would absolutely recommend it, not only for the cultural context but for the quality. My complaints are only that Tolkien overdoes it with descriptions. It’s honestly really boring at points and unnecessary. I feel almost as if his own world just captivated him so much to the point where that was all he wanted to get across. I also feel Frodo was not captivating protagonist and struck me as whiny and useless. I still think this book is worth it however! Definitely deserves the hype

I have always been fascinated by how much effort Tolkien put into creating Middle Earth and the Lord of the Rings as we know it and appreciate it today. He created the most magical, adventurous, and exciting trilogy for young and old to read and reread. From the intricate maps, the detailed descriptions, and the nail-biting encounters, to the entire written and spoken Elvish language, Tolkien was an imaginative genius. His tales of brave, young hobbits, men with true character, wise elves, grumpy, axe-wielding dwarves, and a faithful wizard, continue to thrill audiences around the world.

Brief remarks:
Pretty cool, overall. I have read the LOTR Trilogy & the Hobbit AT LEAST once/year for over 15+ years...it was a neat chance reading this part with the film based art included! I think I'll look for the rest of the set & check them out as well.
My only complaint is I could only find it in a "real" book at the time (versus ebook) & I find myself no longer good at actually picking up a true book & turning pages; how pathetic is THAT?! Lame.

I am currently reading lord of the rings fellowship of the ring this is a really good book I think the author did a really good book surprisingly he wrote this before the hobbit I think the author did a really good job of telling the landscape and characters I am now moving on to the second book I gave this book 5 stars I recommend this book to any one who likes fantasy happy reading!

No WORDS could describe HOW PERFECT the trilogy is 😭😭 I read it when I younger, and I became so good at writing afterwards (because the vocabulary and the verb tenses are very researched) . I am not gonna start talking about the story because you should really read it . Period . (It's long to read but I SWEAR it's worth all the hype ) .
