NOTE: This coming year I have set a challenge for myself of reading one book a week that takes me out of my comfort zone. A book that may include one (or more) tropes (scenarios) that I avoid like the plague. Cheating. Older women/younger man. OW drama. Just to name a few. Nothing is off limits. I am taking a HUGE step out of the box I live in and charting a course into the unknown (HaHa). My reviews for these books will differ from my usual as I will focus more on whether the author wowed me despite it having content I avoid. That said, I will go into each book with an open mind and an open heart and who knows, maybe I will discover a new favorite author on the way

description

description~THIS BOOK INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING TROPES (SCENARIOS) I USUALLY AVOID~ (don't click if you don't want the book spoiled!!)

~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
I found this one to be very well written. The pace was great. The plot was engaging and even though it had pretty much EVERY trope and scenario I hate in my romance books it still kept me turning the pages. I loved that it was set in Canada my home country. I figured out what the twist was very early on and It almost had me throwing in the towel. Alas, I kept going to see if I was right and I was. Hannah had There was also another twist at the end I did NOT see coming and it left me a bit stunned.

~HERO~
Rhys, I didn't love him. I didn't hate him. He was your typical cliché over the top arrogant manwhore and I am exhausted with cliché manwhores. Not to mention he was only 21 but had the sexual past of a forty-year-old...sigh. Honestly, his character didn't have much depth apart from being an arrogant douchewhore.

~HEROINE~
Hannah was a decent heroine. She was older than Rhys and we all know how much I dislike the older woman/younger man thing. That said, she was barely four years older, so it didn't bother me overly much. I don't have much else to say about her. I liked her. I didn't understand why in the world she would want ANYTHING to do with the walking STD Rhys, but crazy makes the world go around so c'est la vie.

description

~SIDE CHARACTERS~
There was a good cast of secondary characters in this one. I loved Siena. She was a female version of your typical manwhore character. I also liked Shaun and would love to see a little novella with him.

~HEAT LEVEL~
This was light on the spice. For a book that constantly harped on what a whore the hero was, it was tame in the sex department. The first sex scene doesn't even take place until 65%. That said, the ones we get were suitably hot.

~ANGST LEVEL~
Highish. I didn't find it particularly angsty per se. There was just a lot of things I don't particularly like in my romances that made it more on the angsty side for me. There is a TON of OW drama in this one. Tons of mentions about the hero's manwhoring ways. OW popping up throughout the book. The hero is with OW after the author has built up the attraction between the main characters. There wasn't an OM drama. I wish there had been so it would have offset the nastiness of the hero's whoring ways. *lol* There was also a lot of push/pull on the part of the heroine.

~IN THE END~
To be honest, this book was doomed from the start. As soon as I figured out it had along with an older woman/younger man, I knew I would not love it. There were several times I debated with myself about throwing in the towel. But the entire point of this challenge is to step out of my box and despite the plot having things that turned me off I still found myself thinking; just a few more pages and then I'll call it a day. A few more pages turned into a few more chapters and that turned into me finishing the book. I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. It was a middle of the road read that was very well written and had an interesting plot. Unfortunately, sometimes even those things can't get you past personal hangups and had it just been one or two things I might have gotten over them, but NO, this one had just about EVERY SINGLE THING I hate in romance books and that is what ultimately brought this one down FOR ME. So be sure to keep in mind when you are deciding on whether or not to give this one a chance that this review is solely based on MY feelings and you may well not be bothered by or have the same hangups as I do.description

FOR GOODREADS

Buried-Alive SMASHWORDS

Title: Buried Alive
Author: Stacey Marie Brown
Genre: Contemporary
Publication Date: January 12, 2018

I genuinely don't know where to begin, I love Stacey Marie Brown's Darkness series, it's definitely among my top paranormal/fantasy romances (I've lost count on the number of times I've read this series). So imagine my excitement for receiving this book, and now image my utter disappointment after having finished this book. It took me 2 1/2 days to finish this book.... 2 1/2 DAYS people!!!! Not because it was a thick book... No No.. The plots were well written but there was just something about it that I couldn't tolerate. Maybe it was the pace? cliché storyline? the unnecessary dramatics? Don't even get me started on the couple... we finally get some action after 68% of the book! 68%!
Before you scoff at me, I am all for the 'angst' and 'sexual tension' but the foundation of the storyline should hold your interest, right? well it didn't. There were even times where I'd literally speak out loud and mock "Oh wow...I didn't see that coming (*eye roll*)".

I admit I am a sucker for a story of darkness, angst, broken hearts etc but Hannah and Rhys bored me. And I hate admitting that but I have to be honest- Stacey let me down in this book.
I think the word that best describes this book is cliché

It's no secret that I am Stacey Marie Brown fan. There isn't a book of hers that I've picked up that I have not enjoyed. Stacey has this wonderful ability to make you fall in love with her well-crafted stories and layered characters -- all of them. Buried Alive is no exception. This novel brought me out of my reading slump. The story is fresh, the characters are complex and likable, and there is just enough raw emotion and sexiness to keep you wanting more. Another beautiful story by Stacey. Buried Alive is a must read! Just know you will get no sleep if you start this book before bed, because you won't be able to put it down.

This was my first Stacey Marie Brown book and it was amazing! I loved Rhys and Hannah, both struggling in the darkness only needing each other to find the peace they long for. I don't want to give anything away, you need to experience the story for yourself, but I loved how these two damaged souls found their version of a happily ever after.

Although I am a bigtime fantasy buff, I will read anything by Stacey Marie Brown. Buried Alive sucked me right in. It was raw, gritty, and sexy as hell!

Usually contemporary romances begin to lose my interest around the mid-way point, but Brown saved so many major reveals until the end, which is one of my favorite things about her books—she keeps the good stuff coming in spades!

Rhys and Hannah had ice melting chemistry throughout. The push and pull between these two snow-crossed lovers kept my eyes glued to the page, anticipating their every encounter.

Bump this one to the top of your reading pile (don’t let it get “buried”) and make sure to check out Brown’s exciting fantasy titles, as well.

I love Stacey Marie Brown's books. My favorite is the City of Embers, but I devoured this book. I read it in a day. It was fast paced, but still developed the story and characters in the perfect way. You know sometimes you click with authors, I think she's that author for me. She really can do no wrong, because I'm not a huge romance fan and I really enjoyed this book. This book was unique in a few ways that I really enjoyed, but I'm not going to ruin it for the readers. Pick this book up, it's great. I was a little sad to be finished.

Most people don’t feel comfortable in the darkness, don’t want to be around people who do.

I have no words to really convey how I feel about this book. There are a lot of things that bothered me, no not bothered maybe irked me. But after reading the last words I was at a loss, what with everything that I had read and the things that irked me how could it come down to that ending? That twist and turn, the emotions that were described. The pain, the loss, of drowning in loneliness. That with all that irked me it didn’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

Hannah Jennings has come home to Whistler, Canada after running away for nine years and the death of her grandmother she has nowhere else to go. Once a happy, fun, boisterous girl she is now a shadow of her former self. With all the guilt she carries. The burden but what happened to her. A high price was paid.

Being back home the one person she doesn’t want to bump into is Rhys.

Rhys Axton has been living in the shadows all of his life he’s nearly through the finish line. He has been rejected all his life. His only support his coach and surrogate father. He has an anger and darkness in him that is on the brink of consuming him every day.

Rhys & Hannah having been living a lie and they both know it. They both are looking for something they finally find one another. Hannah tries to keep her distance but in the end she can’t. They get closer and closer until there is no turning back.

I liked the MC and I didn’t. There was something interesting about them and what they are going through but other times they drove me crazy. At times this book was maddening, frustrating, and heart-breaking with secrets and lies.

I didn’t particularly like Siena but the way she stood up for Hannah well she is my homie now.
But with everything that bothered me I can say that there is a lot going for this book.

As a new to me author I didn’t know what to expect. I absolutely love the author’s writing style. It’s hook, line and sinker. I was captivated by it from start to finish. Was I frustrated? Yes. Was it maddening to read at times? Hell yes. Did I want to throw my kindle against the wall most of the time? Yes, yes, yes and yes.

What bothered irked me was that there was an age gap. Older woman/younger man although it is only four years, I’m just not fond of these tropes. But Rhys acted older than he was which saved it for me.

Trope two I’m not a fan of his other woman drama and boy was there some drama.
I would need at least 2 extra pair of hands to count the amount of times the Hero mentioned that he could get any woman anytime he wanted. All the snow bunnies, it was for ME repeated one too many times. They have nothing on the snow bunnies here. #RidingRhys. Yuck.

Things I would have liked to have seen;

A longer epilogue, what happens with her future career?

More closure when it came to Hannah seeing her brother. Rhys’s father reconciling with Rhys.

After all the revelations the epilogue just wasn’t enough.

All in all I am extremely impressed with this book and although it had a lot of stuff I usually don’t like in a read I would recommend it.

5 Out of the Shadow CROWNS

Stacey Marie Brown is a new to me author, and I desperately hope she continues to write contemporary romances because Buried Alive is phenomenal. It is has everything - secrets, angst, turmoil, and passion. I never wanted it to end!

Rhys’s character is the epitome of sports heroes in the romance world. He is the reason I love sports romances. He has the confident swagger, but has the bad boy persona I adore. He is so much more than this, though. He has years of damage affecting who he is and the anger he carries around with him. As these parts of his character are revealed, readers’s hearts will break for him, and they will root for him to finally achieve what he has worked for his whole life. Plus, this man has the right level of dominance in the bedroom to heat it up, and his chemistry with Hannah is off the charts.

My heart broke for Hannah, too! With each moment of her past that is revealed, my compassion for her grew, and I just wanted her to get back to who she has been. To see someone so vibrant become a lifeless body devoid of true life is soul-destroying, but she begins to heal, grow, and change, and I was enamored with the person she became! I also adore her because she is a heroine who can handle the hero. She challenges him, puts him in his place with fantastic banter, and eventually refuses to run! Her evolution is so amazing to witness.

This story will grab readers from the very beginning. The lifelessness of the characters and the obvious pain they carry is unclear and shrouded in secrecy, upping our desire to know. Throughout the novel, the reader begins to piece the parts of the past together, and while I knew how they would end up being connected, I can honestly say I didn’t see the plot revelation she threw at us. I was shocked, and it was fantastic. It explained so much about the characters and what motivates them. It was absolutely perfect, just like the ending.

You know how you know a story is great? You don’t want it to end. You want to go with the characters when it is over. You desperately want there to be a secondary character worthy of a second book so you can get even the tiniest glimpse of the original couple. I want all of these after the conclusion of Buried Alive. It is emotional and riveting journey that not only shows readers the importance of love but also of moving on and living life to he fullest.

If there is one constant in reading for me it's the giddy delight I get when meeting a new or new-to-me author’s words. That rush during that initial read is off-the-charts incredible! I just popped my Stacey Marie Brown book cherry with BURIED ALIVE that was more of an explosion because HOLY HEADY, HOT, and HEART-HITTING READ!!! From the very first page, Buried Alive was my FIX and I could not get enough!!! Life was on hold as I. Could. Not. Put. This. Book. Down!

A broken hero and heroine drawn are together.

Broken sees broken.

His eyes drifted over my head, a scary blankness in his eyes. I recognized that expression. It was one I saw in the mirror every day. Vacant. Numb.

Darkness sees darkness.

”We both live in the darkness.”

Like sees like.

The longer I was around her, the lighter I became.

Rhys and Hannah are HERO AND HEROINE PERFECTION!!! Rhys is one hot, heartfelt, intense, dark, and super star snowboarder—the ULTIMATE ALPHA! Hannah is stunning and strong—a pillar of strength! Hannah and Rhys’ humorous and heated banter was INTOXICATING!!! I loved these kindred spirits so much who MELTED ME with their darkness mixed with light! These two imperfectly perfect and shattered souls made each other whole.

All I could do was hold on as he consumed me. Breathing me in whole.

Like a shard of glass, Buried Alive glitters and shines, then cuts deep. Humming with adrenaline-inducing action and paralyzing with emotional intensity, this story of two broken souls fused by fate will sear itself into your memory long after the last page. This story SLAYS demons and souls. This story is healing after heartbreak. This story is life and living. This story is EVERYTHING!!!

He was here to destroy me.

Amusing. Arousing. Adrenaline-filled. Addicting. Awe-inspiring. An electrifying and emotionally-rich roller coaster of a sports romance, Buried Alive is an ADRENALINE RUSH OF FEELS until the end!!! It twists and turns like pro snowboarder, Rhys, conquering the slopes. My feels were free-falling through this story. I felt every word I read in Buried Alive. This romance is HARD-FOUGHT LOVE at its best!!! Buried Alive is still BEGUILING ME!!! This heart-pounding and heartwarming romance still holds my heart.

”You made me feel alive again.”

***5 ‘Comfortable in the Darkness’ Stars***

OMG! This book took me on one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride that I didn’t want to get off of. Rhys and Hannah grabbed hold of my heart and mind and even when the feels got to overwhelming aka I actually got all kinds of teary and sniffly, I couldn’t (wouldn’t) put the book down (Thank god for the phone app) I had to see them get their HEA and in the end, it was all kinds of everything!

Rhys and Hannah were those characters that you can’t help but love and come to adore, but the process is a rough one. They are both wallowing in the darkness and it has its claws so deep into them that they don’t always recognize themselves and they find that they are simply existing instead of living. But as they continue to collide bits and pieces of who they truly are start to come out and I found that I thoroughly enjoyed who they were under the darkness. Their journey to their HEA is a rocky one, especially with that secret hanging over their heads, but I loved who they were when they were together. Regardless of the chaos swirling around them, when they were together it simply felt right. The chemistry between them was intense and I loved where they were both at in the end.

Now for the “Secret”. As far as I am concerned, the secret was another character in the story because it guided so many of the characters actions and it drove me absolutely batshit crazy as I tried to figure it out using the little, very, very little breadcrumbs that were dropped throughout the book, but I failed. Not totally because I maybe put together 10% or so of it together, but I was not prepared for what the brutal truth of it was. I felt like I was gut punched by it and the feels were all too real. So, I can only kowtow to Ms. Brown and the amazing job she did with it!

This is not my first read by Ms. Brown, I have a certain love and adoration for a honey loving, narcoleptic monkey sprite, as well as a certain pirate, but even being a fan of The Collector series didn’t properly prepare me for Buried Alive. I knew the author could write, no doubt about that, but the emotions that were pulled out of me with this one were intense...hell, tears were happening and that rarely happens, but that’s how invested I was in Rhys and Hannah, that was how real they felt to me. So, if you’re looking for an emotionally charged romance with well written characters (and have a thing for snowboarding) then this is a definite must read!

Wow. Just wow. I have read one of Stacey's books prior to having the privilege of reading Buried Alive, she decided to write out of her normal genre and I am so glad she did!

I love when I am reading a book and can't stop and when I am not reading it, I am thinking about it. This was that book for me. So many emotions while reading. Books with depth and heart wrenching moments are hard to come by. Buried Alive will rip your heart out and slowly put it back together again.

Rhys and Hannah both have secrets and heartbreak in their lives. The gravitational pull between them is so strong neither of them can stay away from each other. However, there is secrets that must come out even if it will tear them apart.

Secrets, lies, love, heartache this story has it all. It's so good!!

Audiobook Review

Overall 4 stars
Narration 5 stars
Story 3.5 stars

This story was much more mysterious and emotionally complex than I thought it would be. It's part sports romance, part slow burn, and part mystery. Hannah/Brennley and Rhys are so broken when we first meet them. They share an instant connection, but as the story progresses, we find out just how deep it runs. There was a lot of frustrating back and forth drama with these two that left me with a bit of whiplash. Rhys is the typical manwhore athlete and the whole Riding Rhys hashtag along with the persistent ex-girlfriend added to the angst. Slowly the pieces of the past are revealed in flashbacks and though I had a strong suspicion about what the big reveal would be, I was still moved and heartbroken thanks to the amazing performances by Aaron Shedlock and Andi Arndt. The narration was fantastic and both narrators did a wonderful job creating distinct voices for the different characters. This is my first Stacey Marie Brown book, but I look forward to reading/listening to more.

Buried Alive had my head spinning! I just couldn't stop reading! Hannah held the weight of so many secrets . It's crushing to think anyone would ever have to go through what both Hannah and Rhys went through. I didn't expect the turns and twists this book takes you on. But I can tell you that neither of them deserves anymore heartache. I enjoyed this book immensely! My first read by this author and it completely rocked!

So, if you don't already know, contemporary romance isn't my genre. BUT Stacey Marie Brown is a favorite of mine. Aaaannnddd when combined together, I was actually able to enjoy it! Stacey was still able to pull off her little twist thing that she does so well with her books. True, I love her urban fantasy/paranormal romances even more (what can I say? She's kick butt in that genre) and am looking forward to more. I think she pulled this contemporary romance off, though. SMB is excellent at creating wounded characters that are so relatable and likable. Characters you want to get behind and of course, she knows how to do steamy. Now, I can't say I'm a convert and gonna start reading all contemp. romances, but if SMB is writing them, I might make an exception.

I’ve been a huge fan of Stacey since I discovered her Darkness Series! When I saw that there was an ARC available for her newest book and I had to jump on it right away! When I got the email to download it, I did mediately immediately and read it until 3AM when I could no longer keep my eyelids open and then woke up and finished the book.
Every romance novel I’ve read, I hated. I find them cheesy, the writing horrible and next to no character building. I believed that Stacey would stay true to her skill set and actually give us an amazing story with romance.
There was a few cheesy lines ya, but I throughly enjoyed the book. The characters where amazing and the story wasn’t just about sex, it was about finding love and happiness. It’s a story about growth and climbing your way out of darkness and depression.
Also on a side note, I thought in the beginning I had the entire story figured out and that it was going to be predictable.... well all my predictions where dead wrong and I was kinda shocked by it. I wasn’t expecting the things that transpired and it was a pleasant surprise!
Now If only I read this book in a mountain with snow instead of being in 80 degree weather then everything would be perfect!

So it’s no secret that I love Stacy Marie Browns books. I be read them all... twice!
This one was no different! It was fantastic. Her first try at the Adult Contemporary Romance genre and it was a hit for me.

The story of Rhys and Hannah was awesome! It was painful to read. It was a delight to read. It was heart warming to read. It was everything good to read.

After a horrific accident that involved both of them indirectly these two became detached from life and their emotions buried alive since the accident.

Hannah lost her boyfriend and her brother while Rhys lost his brother too in the tragic accident.

The need to start over brought Hannah back to where it all started and brought them together.

Very emotional book so have your tissues close! I love this Author I’m pretty much any genre!

Stacey has done it again. Her writing and storytelling is so phenomenal that it is like a movie playing in your heard. This book will suck you in from page one and keep you turning the pages to find the truth.
Hannah is a lost soul with a secret past who is coming home after 9 years.
Rhys is a sexy future Olympic snowboarder who is your typical manhore.
The chemistry between these to will melt the ice around them.
With a beautiful scenery and a dynamite story line, Buried Alive is a 5+ star read!

When I found out this was the first Contemporary Romance by this author, I couldn't believe it. This was an amazing story very well written. Stacey drew me in from the first page and it was impossible to put it down.

Hannah Brennley Evans is home in Canada after living away for nine years following a horrific accident. She changed her name and appearance when she moved, but moving home during Snowboarding Olympic tryouts, the press is bound to find out who she is eventually. All she ever wanted was to be an Olympic Champion. Now that she's home, she waitresses to help her family at the lodge. Little does she know the one person she's going to be assigned to serve is the one person she doesn't want to be anywhere near. It could break them both.

Rhys Axton is determined to make it to the Olympics. He's had an injury but he won't let it keep him down. He's all about snowboarding, sex and working out. Rhys had a rough childhood full of rejection by his family. He was only allowed to spend one Christmas with them. When Hannah knocks on his door to bring his meals, he knows he has to have her next, even though he's not alone at the time. She's different and he can't figure out why, but he won't stop until he does.

Following this story was an absolute pleasure. The dual pov was definitely necessary to the story. It felt like the twists and turns smacked me in the face! The tragic accident was not even close to anything I could have imagined, or how it tied Hannah and Rhys together. Can a bad boy who had demons to chase and a girl who lives in secrets and lies get through their past, or will it drown them before they have a fair chance? This was my first book by this author and I can definitely say it will not be my last!

When I read SMB was doing a contemporary stand alone romance, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it...and holy shit, it's all kinds of fabulous.

Hannah left her painful past behind her nine years ago, but as is usually the case you cant really escape...She finds herself back home and the ghosts of her past don't take long to come knocking.

Rhys has spent years living in the shadow of his dead brother, He was the benchmark for snowboarders, on his way to the top...and while Rhys is brilliant in his own right, people just wont stop the comparisons.

When these two come face to face, both haunted by the past, sparks ignite. Actually way more than sparks...how the hell did these two not melt the mountain.

The sex is hot but the story is itself incredibly sweet. Girl meets Guy both kinda broken, Girl harbours dark secret that she knows will affect the way said Guy feels about her .......
and Uh oh she's not telling.

Olympic trials, a world class ski resort, a few snarky and occasional douchebag charcters and a tragedy that made headlines 9 years prior, set the stage for this romance to unfold.

Never fear, while there are road blocks thrown in their path, these two do actually get their HEA.

The emotional, sometimes rocky, steaming hot road to get there though is absolutely worth the read
It's another 5 star read from Stacey Marie Brown

The setting of this book was amazing and so wintery, it is a great cozy fall/winter read. It was nice and descriptive which really gives you that winter feeling. I did see a lot of plot twists coming, but it didn’t bother me much. I still enjoyed the ride and everything these characters went through. I also loved the mystery vibes, you slowly discover what happened all these years ago. I loved the tension and banter between the two main characters. The pace of the book was great as well, it made me want to keep on reading. Oh and the spicy scene’s are amazing as well. Overall, a great winter read for romance lovers!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for this book and...What an AMAZING read! It's been a while since I've stayed up reading something and at 4:41am I can say I am extremely glad I did so with this one. This story is wonderful in so many ways. The chemistry between Hannah & Rhys is 🔥🔥🔥. The emotion behind the story and the feelings these two characters share, aside from their attraction to each other, is beautiful in a dark, funny, sexy, and haunting way. Not only them but the other characters that play such a huge role in the main characters' developments... just wow! Once again, the author has created imperfect, layered characters that pique the reader's interest and their curiosity by wanting to get to know them better. It's the dreams shattered and built in the snow that is truly beautiful in this story. The types of love and loyalty that hold these characters together. Highly recommend.

Buried Alive by Stacey Marie Brown is a standalone, sports- and contemporary romance novel.
Meet Hannah Evans - Jennings - . After a horrible accident years ago she left her home town and moved to her grandmother. Now she´s back with her driven parents. Somehow she failed - herself, her expectations and her goals. She´s still deeply wounded by the incident who destroyed her whole world.
Rhys Axton is a up and coming snowboard star, determined to become a olympic team member. He suffers from a injury, but is more than determined. He´s fuul of self-esteem, a player. He has demons of his own.
Both meet and there is a literally oh s..t moment- she recognizes him and tries to avoud him at all costs. To no avail. He wants her and goes a long way and sheme to get her.
When the truth is revealed both are destroyed again.
I love Stacey Marie Brown´s books. I´ve read every single one. Buried Alive is a great read with wonderful characters, extremely well written- you can feel the characters emotions in the book. Buried Alive is a pageturner and I give 4 stars !
