Lightning Strike: A Murder Brings Heartache, Questions, and Redemption

Rate this book
A brutal murder opens the pages of this second story in the Dorothy Dennehy Mystery series. The crime derails her plans to be in New York with her fiancé. And she is thrown headfirst into the hardest case of her career.

Her character is called into question when she faces unfounded police accusations, and she needs the help of trusted friends to find the murderer. Keeping her emotions in check is vital, but she’ll stop at nothing to succeed.

Lightning Strike is a multi-layered book, proving that Jamie Tremain knows about relationships and how a wounded heart copes with tragedy.

“Lightning Strike is as much about relationships as it is a mystery and it’s that level of emotional intensity that draws the reader into this well-plotted mystery novel featuring a strong but all to vulnerable woman.” Vicki Delany/Eva Gates 2019 Derrick Murdoch Award Winner

Jamie Tremain bio

Jamie Tremain was “born” in the summer of 2007. A collaborative effort brought about by two fledgling authors Pam Blance and Liz Lindsay. Work colleagues who happened to share a love of reading and writing, and the natural next step was to try their hand at creating a story of their own.

Jamie Tremain has worked hard to be a visible presence in the writing community, where encouragement and support are golden.

We have 2 series - The Dorothy Dennehy Mystery Series, and the Grant's Crossing Series. With both these series we have become known for our ability to blend crime, mystery, and relationships to create a memorable story.

In April of 2023, we collaborated with author Gloria Ferris and released the first book in our new Mechanic Falls Gem Caper Series - Worlds May Change. And we now have 3 more books in the series!

Having followed Dorothy Dennehy since her first outing, diving into Lightning Strike felt like reconnecting with a friend only this time, the stakes are higher, the emotions deeper, and the tension near-unbearable.

Jamie Tremain wastes no time plunging readers into the storm: a brutal murder that not only halts Dorothy’s plans to reunite with her fiancé in New York but also paints a target on her back. From the get-go, the book is a taut, emotionally charged mystery that balances the grit of criminal investigation with the raw, unfiltered weight of personal trauma.

What truly stands out in Lightning Strike is Dorothy herself. She’s smart, intuitive, and fierce, but we see her pushed to the brink here. Being accused wrongly by the very people she’s worked alongside is more than just a professional hurdle; it’s a deeply personal betrayal. You feel her isolation and frustration, and you root for her not just to solve the case but to reclaim her name and dignity.

The pacing is excellent. The mystery unfolds in layers, and while Tremain keeps us guessing, it never feels like a gimmick. Every twist hits with emotional resonance because the characters are so grounded. The supporting cast especially Dorothy’s close knit circle adds warmth and levity in just the right doses, creating a contrast that makes the darker moments hit harder.

And let’s talk about the emotional core of the book. Tremain doesn’t shy away from exploring how grief, suspicion, and betrayal fracture even the strongest bonds. But what makes this book stick with you is how it weaves those fractures back into something stronger. Redemption, as the title suggests, is earned never handed out.

If you’re looking for a mystery with heart, one that respects both the genre and the emotional intelligence of its characters, Lightning Strike delivers. Dorothy Dennehy is not just solving crimes she’s surviving them, and in doing so, she shows us what resilience really looks like.

A gripping, heartfelt read. I’m already looking forward to what Jamie Tremain throws at Dorothy next.

Lightning Strike gripped me from the very first page. Jamie Tremain masterfully weaves together suspense and heartfelt storytelling in a way that doesn’t just entertain it resonates. The murder at the heart of the story isn’t just a puzzle to be solved; it sets off a deeply personal journey that explores grief, secrets, and ultimately, healing.

What I loved most was how layered the characters felt. You don’t just follow the mystery you feel the emotional fallout, the doubts, the inner struggles. The pacing is perfect, and every chapter pulled me deeper into the unraveling truths. It’s more than a whodunit it’s a story about what happens after the shock, when the real work of understanding and forgiveness begins.

If you're someone who appreciates mysteries that go beyond the surface and touch the soul, this is definitely one to add to your list.
