I read Servant Leadership: Discover The 10 Essential Skills to Unlock Your Team Performance and Become an Amazing Servant Leader by Robert Stewart for a Servant Leadership class at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. I chose this book for my report because it was one of the books with the best customer ratings. Like many other books on this topic, it referenced and was inspired by Greenleaf - one of the first leaders who wrote a lot about servant leadership. To this day, we study his wisdom and knowledge to apply to our leadership in our organizations and churches. Stewart writes this book for a leader who wants to grow in the way they serve their team by walking us through Greenleaf’s 10 Characteristics of a Servant Leader. Every chapter covers a different characteristic. My favorite insight from the who book comes from Chapter 9, the chapter covering the characteristic of Stewardship. Stewart writes, “The servant leader places equal value on the welfare of their followers and inspires them to strive for greater goals for themselves by taking responsibility for their professional and personal growth.” (Page 69). I think this helps servant leaders keep the main thing, the main thing. It opens the door for the leader to get to know the follower more by knowing what they want to do and how they want to grow, which then translates to the way the leader can best lead them and give them work that will get them to their end goal. Reading this book really helped me practically learn and apply things to my leadership that will result in my serving those I lead best. Robert Stewart wrote a great book that easily explains and goes into some depth about what it looks like to be a servant leader. I look forward to seeing more of his work come out and read what is on his heart about leadership. I think many people can benefit from reading this, one unique thing I thought of was, If I was a manager or CEO of an organization, I would buy copies for my team and have them read this book! It would help set our culture even more and realign out purpose and priorities with the goal of growing God’s kingdom and serving His people.
At the heart of this book is a powerful message that places people first. The essence of several leadership lies in its ability to divert attention from the leader themselves and channel it towards empowering every member of the team. This transformative shifts creates a ripple effect, where leaders find their true power by fostering an environment that empowers and uplifts others.
As the head of HR at my company, I’m constantly looking for resources to support our management team. This is an excellent addition to the growing collection we have. The book outlines the benefits of servant leadership and how small actions can make large impacts on team performance. Highly recommend.
This book really outlines the heart of a true leader and how its foundation is on serving others. Check your pride and ego at the door, be teachable and allow the words of this book change the way you think about leadership.
Some good content, but very, very poorly edited, with too many glaring typos & formatting issues. One chapter had an almost exact repeat of the same material for 2+ paragraphs within a couple pages. Come on!...
Overall, this was a good intro resource to learn the fundamentals of servant leadership. There were grammar issues and typos throughout the book that were a bit distracting. This was an enjoyable book and highly recommend it to others looking for resources on servant leadership.
