The Golden Fleece
Reissued by Creative Age Press in 1945 as Hercules, My Shipmate, a novel about the voyage of the Argo. Written with ideas on The White Goddess as a cultural/anthropological backdrop to the ancient Greek tale.
What the Golden Fleece really was—a cloak tossed to earth by a drunken Zeus, a sheepskin book of alchemic secrets or the gilded epidermis of a young human sacrifice named Mr. Ram—nobody knows. But Graves is quite sure that, whatever the Golden Fleece was, the voyage of Jason & his Argonauts really happened. His story shows the legendary cruise as one of the bawdiest, bloodiest, most boisterous expeditions of all time.
In I, Claudius & its Claudius the God sequel, Graves brought the teeming life of Claudian Rome so vividly alive that they became bestsellers. In the not-so-successful Wife to Mr. Milton, his blend of imagination & scholarship projected his readers into 17th-Century England & the bedchamber temper tantrums of the blind poet-politician.
With Hercules & shipmates, Graves becomes an ancient Greek, moving among demigods & goddesses, myths & monsters with an easy familiarity & a wealth of erudite detail. Both sometimes seem too much of a good thing. Atomic-age readers, ill-attuned to the leisurely, formal talk of myth-age Greeks, may find themselves skipping some of the longer speeches.
Most of the Argo's 50-oar crew were princes, each with a special talent & gift of the gods. The only woman aboard was a princess: Atalanta of Calydon, a virgin huntress who could outrun any man in Greece. Argus, who built the Argo, was the world's finest shipwright. Castor & Pollux, sons of Leda & Zeus-as-swan, were champion prizefighters. Nauplius, Poseidon's son, was an unrivaled navigator. Orpheus could make sticks & stones dance to his lyre. Hercules of Tiryns was the world's strongest man. He would've captained the Argonauts were it not that in moments of insanity he murdered friend & foe alike.
Captaincy devolved on Jason of lolcos—a man nobody liked or trusted, but who had a power denied to all the others: women instantly fell in love with him. Even surly Hercules agreed it a quality worth all the rest.
Backed by divine blessings & equinoctal winds, the Argonauts set sail. On the Island of Lemnos, peopled solely by women, they generously stopped off to help out with spring sowing. Nine months later, 200 children were born, of whom no less than 60 were said to be the spitting image of Hercules.
On Samothrace, they were initiated into the sacred mysteries. The Goddess of All Being mated with the Serpent Priapus to be delivered of a bull. Then the sacred nymphs leapt on them & scratched & bit until even Hercules passed out. Thereafter, the Argonauts glowed with "a faint nimbus of light."
The Argonauts boldly pushed on thru the dread Hellespont & entered the Black Sea. To their dismay, Hercules deserted, summoned home to perform another of his mighty labors. "Holy Serpents!" he growled. "Tell me what this time?" The job—cleaning the Augean Stables—didn't take long. He stayed around afterwards with the Lydian high priestess—who in due time bore male triplets. In gratitude, she taught him to spin, tying up his hair in blue braids. He was crazy about it, admitting confidentially he'd always wanted to be a woman.
The Argonauts went on without Hercules. Reaching Colchis, Aphrodite won the Fleece for them. She made her son Eros wait behind a pillar with his bow until handsome Jason strode into the King of Colchis' palace. Eros shot Medea thru the heart, & the smitten princess helped to get the Fleece from her father's temple. Mythology's most famous voyage had reached its goal, but Graves takes 150 more pages to wind things up.

Born in Wimbledon, he received his early education at King's College School and Copthorne Prep School, Wimbledon & Charterhouse School and won a scholarship to St John's College, Oxford. While at Charterhouse in 1912, he fell in love with G.H. Johnstone, a boy of fourteen ("Dick" in Goodbye to All That) When challenged by the headmaster he defended himself by citing Plato, Greek poets, Michelangelo & Shakespeare, "who had felt as I did".
At the outbreak of WWI, Graves enlisted almost immediately, taking a commission in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He published his first volume of poems, Over the Brazier, in 1916. He developed an early reputation as a war poet and was one of the first to write realistic poems about his experience of front line conflict. In later years he omitted war poems from his collections, on the grounds that they were too obviously "part of the war poetry boom". At the Battle of the Somme he was so badly wounded by a shell-fragment through the lung that he was expected to die, and indeed was officially reported as 'died of wounds'. He gradually recovered. Apart from a brief spell back in France, he spent the rest of the war in England.
One of Graves's closest friends at this time was the poet Siegfried Sassoon, who was also an officer in the RWF. In 1917 Sassoon tried to rebel against the war by making a public anti-war statement. Graves, who feared Sassoon could face a court martial, intervened with the military authorities and persuaded them that he was suffering from shell shock, and to treat him accordingly. Graves also suffered from shell shock, or neurasthenia as it is sometimes called, although he was never hospitalised for it.
Biographers document the story well. It is fictionalised in Pat Barker's novel Regeneration. The intensity of their early relationship is nowhere demonstrated more clearly than in Graves's collection Fairies & Fusiliers (1917), which contains a plethora of poems celebrating their friendship. Through Sassoon, he also became friends with Wilfred Owen, whose talent he recognised. Owen attended Graves's wedding to Nancy Nicholson in 1918, presenting him with, as Graves recalled, "a set of 12 Apostle spoons".
Following his marriage and the end of the war, Graves belatedly took up his place at St John's College, Oxford. He later attempted to make a living by running a small shop, but the business failed. In 1926 he took up a post at Cairo University, accompanied by his wife, their children and the poet Laura Riding. He returned to London briefly, where he split with his wife under highly emotional circumstances before leaving to live with Riding in Deià, Majorca. There they continued to publish letterpress books under the rubric of the Seizin Press, founded and edited the literary journal Epilogue, and wrote two successful academic books together: A Survey of Modernist Poetry (1927) and A Pamphlet Against Anthologies (1928).
In 1927, he published Lawrence and the Arabs, a commercially successful biography of T.E. Lawrence. Good-bye to All That (1929, revised and republished in 1957) proved a success but cost him many of his friends, notably Sassoon. In 1934 he published his most commercially successful work, I, Claudius. Using classical sources he constructed a complexly compelling tale of the life of the Roman emperor Claudius, a tale extended in Claudius the God (1935). Another historical novel by Graves, Count Belisarius (1938), recounts the career of the Byzantine general Belisarius.
During the early 1970s Graves began to suffer from increasingly severe memory loss, and by his eightieth birthday in 1975 he had come to the end of his working life. By 1975 he had published more than 140 works. He survived for ten more years in an increasingly dependent condition until he died from heart

Did I know that Poseidon was originally god of the forest? It does knell a distant bell. 
Cloaked in the depths and the salty mist
few consider Poseidon Phytalmius.
Verdant lord, forest king,
to him each leaf and bud does sing.
Long before wrote thoughtful Homer
was he consort to Demeter.
Breathing life upon each branch
so lifeless bleakness was thus stanched.
Phytalmius, nourisher of plants

Anyway, Poseidon is important to Göteborg/Gothenburg so this reawakening of scholastic trivia I now find entirely fab!
I am not a fan of Carl Milles's Swedish Poseidon, he made the face trollish...

Graves's version of The Golden Fleece is not a Disney-esque production, it is for those who crave a deeper rendition with ALL the relevant facts (and some of them not so relevant but fun all the same!) thrown in. Αριστουργηματικό. Μην σας τρομάζει ο όγκος του, είναι πολύ καλογραμμένο και διαβάζεται εύκολα. Φανταστική και η δουλειά του μεταφραστή. Κρίμα που ο εν λόγω εκδοτικός δεν υπάρχει πια, είχε βγάλει εξαιρετικούς τίτλους.

Graves riprende, a partire dalle fonti originali greche, la storia del viaggio degli argonauti per recuperare il vello d'oro. Lo fa con un intento filologico di ricostruzione di una storia tramandata in modo frammentario, ma anche letterario perché restituisce al lettore moderno un testo accattivante. Perché dunque sole 3*?
Perché è luuungo e ci sono stati momenti in cui non vedevo l'ora che si finisse.
Un po' spiazzante tutta la parte con i riferimenti alla triplice dea e alla tradizione matriarcale, completamente spazzata via dagli dei olimpici nel sapere comune. Altro aspetto che mi ha fatto faticare è il numero dei personaggi molto alto, con alcuni nomi simili, che mi hanno fatto fare confusione.
Mi ha divertito il fatto che spesso gli eroi incolpassero gli dei delle loro azioni cruente: do una bastonata e ammazzo un nemico? Non è colpa mia, ma del bastone che Zeus ha fatto cadere dall'albero... Il che mi fa porrre degli interrogativi sul senso di colpa nella Grecia antica rispetto alla cultura cristiana e quanto questo cambiamento abbia modificato mentalità e comportamenti.
Insomma una lettura sicuramente valida e interessante per quanto non sempre scorrevolissima.

Another great classic by Graves, on the mythology of the Argos and the Argonauts, also reads very well like a travelogue.

En esta novela inspirada en el mito de Jasón y los argonautas, Robert Graves ofrece su propia versión del fantástico viaje. Para ella tomó material de diversas fuentes, las que le parecían más confiables en cada caso, pero también completó muchos vacíos en la historia recurriendo a su propia imaginación.
La verdad que los primeros capítulos me aburrieron un poco. En ellos el relato habla sobre los dioses olímpicos, en oposición a la Triple Diosa (madre doncella y guerrera), supuestamente anterior, y cómo poco a poco la creencia en los primeros fue reemplazando a la de ésta. A menos que realmente te interesen muchísimo estas cuestiones, dicha parte se hace demasiado lenta y tediosa y yo no veía la hora de que abandonara ese tema y se centrara específicamente en los argonautas.
Una vez que comienza la aventura de Jasón y sus compañeros, el relato mejora prodigiosamente. Particularmente, me gustó mucho el rol que va tomando Hércules, cuya fuerza y habilidades lo convierten en una especie de superhéroe comparado con los demás mortales, pero cuya torpeza y cambios de humor por momentos lo hacen ver casi como el personaje cómico de la novela.
Me gustó mucho también la transformación que va teniendo el personaje de Medea, a quien al comienzo vemos como una muchacha fiel a su rol de sacerdotisa de Prometeo y obediente con los designios de su padre el rey Eetes, pero con el avanzar de la historia y las circunstancias se muestra como alguien capaz de realizar las acciones más terribles.
Hérculas y Medea son, por distintas razones, los personajes más poderosos que presenta esta historia y -si bien ambos son capaces de utilizar su poder para el bien- también son capaces de la mayor crueldad e injusticia cuando algo se opone a sus objetivos. Podríamos tomarlo, tal vez, como una advertencia a los peligros a los que puede llevarnos el exceso de poder.
Muy buena historia. No me gustó tanto como Yo Claudio, la última novela de Graves que leí antes de esta, pero no puedo dejar de recomendarla.

Read this book for the first time when I was sixteen, revisited it some time ago. An Epic read I think has never been well crafted as this. The story is sublime, the setting quite eery. Jason is tough, his Argonauts are dauntless, the language is clean. Really enjoyed it.

"But remember, no lies! The dead may speak the truth only, even when it discredits themselves." So ends the "Invocation" that begins Robert Graves' The Golden Fleece (1944), Graves having asked the ghost of Little Ancaeus, the last survivor of the Argonauts, to "unfold the whole story" of their quest to retrieve from far Colchis the sacred Fleece. The account begins years after the famous voyage with the death of Ancaeus, when he tried to live among the Maiden, Nymph, and Mother worshiping people of Majorca, because on his home island of Samos the Triple Goddess had been replaced by the Olympian pantheon. Ironically, the priestess who interviews Ancaeus decides that his knowledge of "indecent" and "topsy-turvy" Greek culture (in which, unbelievably, people worship fathers and women are forced to marry men and remain faithful to them and let them ride on top when making love) is too dangerous to let loose on her island and so has her Goat men servants stone him to death.
The conflict between the original Triple Goddess and matriarchal culture of the Mediterranean on the one hand and the Olympians and patriarchal culture of the invading Greeks on the other moves the entire story of the Golden Fleece. Readers who can remain patient through a few chapters of such "historical" context setting are in for a treat, for The Golden Fleece is a bawdy, beautiful, comical, exciting, and violent adventure set in the ancient age of myth, a "real" account of events before they were transformed into legends, an exotic travelogue, and a satiric clash of cultures and genders. And it's just so full of life in all its brutality, brevity, humor, and pathos.
The Golden Fleece is an encyclopedic novel of all things Greek and pre-Greek. Graves incorporates or refers to many myths and legends, from the cosmogony through the trade war between Troy and Greece and the Twelve Labors of Hercules. And from various cultures, including Pelasgian, Cretan, Thracian, Colchian, Taurean, Albanian, Amazonian, Troglodyte, and of course Greek, he works into his novel many interesting customs, about fertility orgies, weddings, births, funerals, and ghosts; prayers, sacrifices, omens, dreams, and mystery cults; boar hunting, barley growing, trading, and ship building, sailing, and rowing; feasting, singing, dancing, story telling, and clothes wearing; boxing, murdering, warring, and treaty negotiating; and more. It all feels vivid, authentic, and strange.
Because Graves writes the novel from the point of view of someone living in the time and place of the Golden Fleece, many fantastic things are recounted matter of factly. For example, people who eat sacred oranges in the sacred manner live as long as they want, gods and goddesses speak to people through oracles and dreams, an augur can understand the speech of birds, Hercules has superhuman strength, and so on. Graves also realistically treats some traditionally fantastic things. For instance, hybrid creatures like centaurs, minotaurs, and satyrs are men belonging to horse, bull, and goat fraternities; cyclops are smiths who squint while doing their work; any woman can cow men by making "gorgon grimaces" (distorting her face and hissing); the sons of gods were born to prostitutes of the temples of those gods; and so on.
And the heroes are so human! Butes the bee keeper loves honey too much. Idas provokes everyone (even Zeus) with his obnoxious jests. Sharp-eyed Lynceus doesn't warn anyone about the malevolent ghosts only he can see. Atalanta the virgin huntress sends mixed signals to Meleager. Echion the herald speaks so smoothly that he believes his own lies. "Accidents" happen to people who get in the way of Peleus. Hercules doesn't know his own strength, is prone to berserk rages, harms more friends than foes, and suffocatingly loves his boy-ward Hylas. Jason is an indecisive, sullen, "wild and witless young man," envied or despised by other men. No great warrior, seaman, painter, orator, or wizard, he leads the Argonauts only because women fall in love with him at first sight, a gift he abuses by using the same "my heart began a golden dance" pick up lines on different women and then loving and leaving them. The jealousies of the heroes are potent: "'How generous you are, prince Hercules,' cried Jason, wishing him dead and securely buried under a towering barrow of earth and stone." Indeed, Orpheus is vital to the quest because he must regularly calm the Argonauts with his music when their egos spark conflicts.

Fans of Robert Graves' other novels, like I Claudius, or of Greek myths and culture, or of exotic historical adventures, would probably enjoy this book.
The conflict between the original Triple Goddess and matriarchal culture of the Mediterranean on the one hand and the Olympians and patriarchal culture of the invading Greeks on the other moves the entire story of the Golden Fleece. Readers who can remain patient through a few chapters of such "historical" context setting are in for a treat, for The Golden Fleece is a bawdy, beautiful, comical, exciting, and violent adventure set in the ancient age of myth, a "real" account of events before they were transformed into legends, an exotic travelogue, and a satiric clash of cultures and genders. And it's just so full of life in all its brutality, brevity, humor, and pathos.
The Golden Fleece is an encyclopedic novel of all things Greek and pre-Greek. Graves incorporates or refers to many myths and legends, from the cosmogony through the trade war between Troy and Greece and the Twelve Labors of Hercules. And from various cultures, including Pelasgian, Cretan, Thracian, Colchian, Taurean, Albanian, Amazonian, Troglodyte, and of course Greek, he works into his novel many interesting customs, about fertility orgies, weddings, births, funerals, and ghosts; prayers, sacrifices, omens, dreams, and mystery cults; boar hunting, barley growing, trading, and ship building, sailing, and rowing; feasting, singing, dancing, story telling, and clothes wearing; boxing, murdering, warring, and treaty negotiating; and more. It all feels vivid, authentic, and strange.
Because Graves writes the novel from the point of view of someone living in the time and place of the Golden Fleece, many fantastic things are recounted matter of factly. For example, people who eat sacred oranges in the sacred manner live as long as they want, gods and goddesses speak to people through oracles and dreams, an augur can understand the speech of birds, Hercules has superhuman strength, and so on. Graves also realistically treats some traditionally fantastic things. For instance, hybrid creatures like centaurs, minotaurs, and satyrs are men belonging to horse, bull, and goat fraternities; cyclops are smiths who squint while doing their work; any woman can cow men by making "gorgon grimaces" (distorting her face and hissing); the sons of gods were born to prostitutes of the temples of those gods; and so on.
And the heroes are so human! Butes the bee keeper loves honey too much. Idas provokes everyone (even Zeus) with his obnoxious jests. Sharp-eyed Lynceus doesn't warn anyone about the malevolent ghosts only he can see. Atalanta the virgin huntress sends mixed signals to Meleager. Echion the herald speaks so smoothly that he believes his own lies. "Accidents" happen to people who get in the way of Peleus. Hercules doesn't know his own strength, is prone to berserk rages, harms more friends than foes, and suffocatingly loves his boy-ward Hylas. Jason is an indecisive, sullen, "wild and witless young man," envied or despised by other men. No great warrior, seaman, painter, orator, or wizard, he leads the Argonauts only because women fall in love with him at first sight, a gift he abuses by using the same "my heart began a golden dance" pick up lines on different women and then loving and leaving them. The jealousies of the heroes are potent: "'How generous you are, prince Hercules,' cried Jason, wishing him dead and securely buried under a towering barrow of earth and stone." Indeed, Orpheus is vital to the quest because he must regularly calm the Argonauts with his music when their egos spark conflicts.

Want to feel like you are Jason (or one of the Argonauts) and not just reading a summary? Sea voyages aren't always comfortable--and neither is this novel--but if you want to sail around the Greek world without skipping events, this is top shelf. Complete and very human, in ways both good and the bad.
Get to know the individual Argonauts, and how they were chosen, plus the royal history and family lines. I enjoy how everyone is superstitious and mindful of the Gods, but the Gods aren't on stage like party extra's and wallpaper, some are even skeptical of the Gods. This is like a Dungeons and Dragons party before there was D & D: wizard, fighter, musician, thief, and so on.
In the opening, we have a beautiful tale of Ancaeus at the Orange-grove. A self-contained chapter that carried me back to Antediluvian times. It changed my mental image of what society was like before the Greeks (for the better.)
This book plays an interesting part in the history of the Triple-goddess, but its importance exceeds the scope of this review.

I never thought I would give up on a book by Robert Graves, but this one I did. It is very long because it is quite unbelievably detailed. I assume Graves did this as a way of reproducing how the story might have been told orally, but also I think in order to cram in his interpretations of just about every Greek myth you can think of.
To give one example, in a banqueting hall where the Argonauts are feasting, there is a painting on the wall showing Daedalus and Icarus flying, so Orpheus tells in great detail the story involved, explaining how some things were misinterpreted and misunderstood, what might really have happened, and so on.
I got about halfway through, and maybe I shall return to it one day, but somehow I doubt it.

It took me a little while to get my head around the 'archaeologically plausible reconstruction' style of this book, having read several feminist rewrites of classical tales full of gods and magic. Once I understood what Graves was trying to do, I really enjoyed his writing. After his personal war experiences he had no time for 'heroes' who revel in fighting, showing them for the brainless thugs they probably were. Bits of the 'travelogue' are on the dull side but most of it helped bring the time alive. I especially enjoyed his solution to the centaurs etc.

Recommend. A less whimsical and more down to earth version of this tale. Graves really respected geography and included an extreme amount of reference points to take you on the journey, along side the Argonauts. Places, cities, capes; much still in existence today, derived their names from this piece of mythology, such as the Hellespont, or The Cape of Jason in the Black Sea.

Hubiera sido muy difícil que hubiera acabado este libro si no llega a estar escrito por Robert Graves. Domina muy bien el mundo clásico y la mitología griega y romana. Ha escogido una buena versión de tantas como hay sobre Jasón y los argonautas. Siempre me había creído que el regreso de los argonautas después del robo del vellocino de oro había sido lo mismo que la ida a través de los Dardanelos y el Bósforo. Sin embargo en mi visita a Liubliana me relataron que en sus leyendas por allí pasó huyendo Jasón y sus marineros. El autor ha debido de empollarse todo lo que hay escrito sobre este evento y relata que su huida fue a través del Danubio y lo escribe tan bien que he terminado creyéndolo

While this book is worthy of consideration as a Retro Hugo finalist, I'm not sure it really belongs on the ballot. Known as The Golden Fleece, it was first published in 1944 in England. It was published in the United States as Hercules, My Shipmate in 1945. Considering that a hypothetical World Science Fiction Convention (whose members vote on the Hugo Awards) would have almost certainly been held in the United States in 1945, it's doubtful that enough U.S. voters would have been familiar with the book to nominate it (Worldcons are open to anyone in the world, but especially during wartime it's unlikely that very many from overseas would participate).
For students of Greek mythology, this is undoubtedly a must-read. Graves begins the book with a lot of background about the Greek gods, their names, etc. It turns out that many of the gods changed names or affiliations depending on which tribe was in power. For example, Poseidon was originally the god of forests, only later becoming the god of the seas because ships are made of wood. Zeus, likewise, went through many iterations, starting as a relatively minor god until later being changed into the father of the gods. But really, for the average reader, you could skip the first three chapters or so.
Then Graves goes into detail about what the Golden Fleece is, how it was stolen, and why it needs to be returned. Following that there is great detail about Jason and all the other Argonauts, how the Argo was designed and built, and only around Chapter 10 is the voyage launched.
The voyage itself is interesting, but Graves still goes off on tangents about various events that are only slightly relevant to the quest. Hercules is somewhat of a comic relief, but he leaves the crew about a third of the way through, and is only a minor character popping up here and there for the remainder of the book. I'm not sure why he gets named in the book's title. The Golden Fleece is a better title (and Jason and the Argonauts is really the most appropriate title).
I had trouble with the myriad of Greek character and place names. Many are recognizable from other books and movies, but many are not. The edition I had did not contain a map, so I really had no idea where any of the locations were.
I'm glad I read this book, but I don't know how much I really got out of it. An annotated edition would probably be better. At least I should have a better understanding of the wonderful Jason and the Argonauts movie the next time I watch it (although I already know that it doesn't really follow this book very closely).

Aventura mítica por excelencia, ahora disfrutada en esta versión del genial Robert Graves, bien detallada, con mayor peso en cuestiones religiosas, lo que aclara gran parte de las motivaciones detrás de la hazaña. Juega con la realidad del mito, con la influencia de esta historia en la futura guerra de Troya, y da algo de luz en el sinfín de conflictos ocurridos en los albores de la Grecia clásica. Tiene un ritmo endiablado, las aventuras no paran, con un constante despliegue de las capacidades extraordinarias de los Argonautas, varios amparados por sus respectivas deidades olímpicas (y no olímpicas).
De este conjunto de héroes superlativo conocía algunos: Jason, Hércules, Orfeo, Peleo, Atalanta, y los gemelos Castor y Polux, pero también descubrí otros que también tienen importancia en el desarrollo del rescate: Mopso, Períclimo, Falero, Eufemo, Nauplius, Equión, Tifis, Argo y podría seguir (verlos todos más abajo). Punto especial para los hermanos Ida y Linceo y su historia de odiosidad con los otros gemelos Castor y Polux, tremenda. Y claro que no puedo dejar de mencionar a Medea, personaje que se roba la película en la segunda mitad del libro, y que deja con la boca abierta incluso a los mismos Argonautas.
Absolutamente recomendable para cualquier amante de la mitología griega, de la aventura, de los superhéroes, o de la génesis de las religiones. Muy entretenido, mucho antes que los Avengers los Argonautas.
Sobre la edición, hace mucho que no leía un libro con letra tan chica, todo un desafío. Igual compensa con los excelentes mapas, árbol genealógico y un apéndice explicativo de Graves sobre los criterios a la hora de generar su versión, muy bueno. Quizás unas notas explicativas hubieran venido bien, pero ahí si que hubiera tenido que regalar una lupa.

Despite a marginally slow opening sequence, this is probably my favorite Graves novel after the I, CLAUDIUS books. This version of the story of the Argo is told in a way that is set in a confusing milieu that has one foot set in a world of the fantastic, with the other somewhat firmly planted in the real. I got the impression that this is what it would have actually been like to live in a world in which the gods occasionally showed some interest. Before that time when, as Julian the Apostate feared, the gods of Olympus decided to collectively turn their backs on us.
While Hercules is not the ultimate protagonist of the novel, he is the focus of the story. His presence is everywhere in the book, even if he is not always right there in each scene, or within miles of the action. This Hercules is a giant, standing over seven feet tall, with enormous lusts and a mind that does not dwell so much on cunning or strategy because the can generally batter his way through any problem. Graves' version of this vast lout is also the funniest I have seen. So funny that it has forever colored the way I see this half-god who eventually became a god.
If you have enjoyed the work of Robert Graves but have missed this novel, you should give it a read. If you're a fan of Roman mythology I can pretty much assure you that you've never experienced quite a version of one of their most famous creations than is presented in this book.

Robert Graves was the Madeline Miller of his generation, if Miller did a lot of shrooms, and the Golden Fleece is the most epic, rowdy, fun, and funny book of his I’ve read. Graves’s Heracles character alone is worth picking it up. It kind of grounds the myth of Jason and the Argonauts in a slightly more real-world version, but there are still elements of the gods and goddesses in there.
If you know anything about Graves’s idiosyncratic theories on Greek mythology and religion more generally, you can definitely see elements of that in there (if I’m not mistaken, the Sacred Feminine made famous in the Da Vinci Code can be traced back to ideas Graves developed) but if you’re not aware of or interested in these controversies, you’ll have no trouble following the story.
The first section is a little bit of a slog, but stick with it. Once Hercules shows up, you’ll be glad you did.

Instantly one of my all-time favorite books. Brilliant retelling of the quest for the Golden Fleece, working in all sorts of fun character moments and an extremely unique concept of the formation of the Greek pantheon which permeates the whole story. I later found that this wasn’t Graves’ first book to delve into such a theological theory, and I’m very excited to read more.
Especially loved the characterization of Hercules in this. I’ve typically found him sort of boring in popular fiction, never really living up to the over-the-top oafishness of his myths. But here he’s on full display, in all his best and worst aspects. It was always a treat when he would show up again somewhere in the story! Robert Graves is very fast becoming one of my most loved authors.

I can't do it. I have to give up. I didn't realize how much fantasy would be in this book. I thought it was historical fiction, but there are centaurs and gods who interact with people and I'm just not interested in that. Even though this may be how the actual story of Jason and the Argonauts goes, I can't read anymore about Apollo and Zeus and the Triple Goddess. Much more fantasy than history. No attempt by the author to imagine how this legend may have started, what may have really happened to cause Jason to go on his journey. This is my second time trying to read a book by this author and DNFing. We might simply be incompatible as author and reader. Two stars because it is partly my fault for not caring for fantasy.

Interesting twist of on the Argunauts mithology.
Probably had siginificant influence on the recent "Song of Troy" written by McCullough Colleen.
The gods play a big role in everything that happens in the book, however they are not as active players as in normal mithology, and they are more rooted into the beleifs all people.

This one's a tough read. Better have your cliff's notes handy if you want to keep up. I was really looking for something with more entertainment value. This book did not deliver on that front, unfortunately.

En el Vellocino de Oro Robert Graves nos hace una detallista recreación de la Grecia Antigua, de épocas preoméricas (S IX-X a.c). En el vellocino dorado se nos cuenta el viaje de ida y vuelta Jasón y los argonautas para rescatar el vellocino de oro del rey Eetes en Cólquide.
El relato comienza con una introducción mitológica describiendo las teorías de Robert Graves y la Diosa Blanca. Básicamente indicaría cómo las civilizaciones griegas antiguas eran sociedades matriarcales que adoraban a la Diosa Blanca. Debido a invasiones y cambios culturales, la Diosa Blanca fue sustituida por Zeus, y subordinada a él como su esposa. Esto vino acompañado por el establecimiento del matrimonio y la evolución a sociedades patriarcales. Para Graves estos acontecimientos no habrían sido pacíficos si no que habrían dado lugar a conflictos. Uno de los cuales pudo ser el robo del vellocino, una reliquia de la Dios Blanca. El rey Atamante, tras repudiar a Nefele y a la diosa Blanca estaba planeando el asesinato de sus hijos Hele y Frixo, los cuales al enterarse huyeron de Grecia con el vellocino dorado. En su viaje Hele murío en el Helesponte (nombre en su honor), mientras que Frixo llegó hasta Cólquide donde fue acogido por el rey Eetes.
Una generación más tarde Jasón, hijo de Eson, legítimo heredero del trono de Yolco usurpado por Pelias, llega a Yolco a reclamar el trono. Como prueba para conseguir el trono, Jasón consulta con el oráculo, y se le encomienda una misión imposible, recuperar el vellocino de oro para restrablecerlo en su antiguo templo y recuperar el cuerpo de Frixo. Para dicha empresa Jasón consigue reclutar a los mejores entre los griecos, los argonautas. Así recluta a Argo para construir el barco, Acasto hijo de Pelias, Orfeo narrador de historias, Hércules, etc. De esta manera comienza el viaje a Cólquide, viaje largo y peligroso, en el cual además deberán sortear el bloqueo Troyano del bosforo. En el camino les ocurren diversas aventuras, como su estancia en la isla de Lemnos, donde después de la expulsión de los hombres se acuestan con las lemnias una fiesta orgiástica.
Cuando llegaron a Cólquide fueron recibidos e indicaron al rey Eetes querían recuperar el cuerpo de Frixo, lo cual les fue concedido. Pero no dijeron nada sobre la recuperación del vellocino de oro. Mientras tanto Medea la hija del rey Eetes había sido prometida al rey de los albaneses, matrimonio que le horrorizaba. Medea, se enamora de Jasón y decide su huida con él. Medea es también sacerdotisa del templo donde se custodia el vellocino. Para el robo del vellocino Medea consigue introducir a Jasón en el templo, duermen a la serpiente Prometeo que custodia el vellocino y roban el vellocino. Para conseguir escapar de cólquide, los argonautas inician un tumulto, enemistando a los colquideos con los albaneses mientras planifican la huida. Durante el tumulto el rey Eetes será asesinado por Atalanta.
Los argonautas consiguen huir de Cólquide, pero tras esclarecerse los hechos, los colquideos comienzan su persecución. La persecución está a cargo del hijo de Eetes, Apsirto y su capitán Aras. Los colquideos alcanzan a los argonautas en la desembocadura del Danubio en el Mar Negro. Allí los argonautas consiguen algo de tiempo, y tienden una trampa a Apsirto en la que le dan muerte.
Muerto Apsirto, los argonautas se dividirán, para conseguir burlar el bloqueo troyano en el Bósforo. Jasón, Medea, algunos argonautas y el vellocino marcharán a pie asta Ea en el mar adriático, mientras el Argo y el resto de los argonautas marcharan por el bosforo. Al cruzar el bosforo los argonautas se encuentran con Aras quien al no ver a Jasón, Medea ni el vellocino les deja pasar. Arasm posteriormente se dará cuenta de su error y los perseguirá de nuevo.
Los argonautas consiguen reagruparse en Ea, donde Circe, la tia de Medea les purifica por el asesinato de Apsirto. Después llegan a la corte de Alcinoo donde se encuentra con Aras. El rey Alcinoo decide que Medea debe volver con Aras, a no se que estuviera ya casada. Sabiéndolo la decisión, la noche anterior Jason y Medea se casaron, y Aras deberá cesar en su persecución.
En viaje de vuleta a Yolco, los argonautas todavía tendrán aventuras como su naufragio y travesía por el lago Tritón. A su llegada a Yolco, Medea idea una estratagema para asesinar a Pelias y poder devolver el vellocino. Medea se disfraza de diosa y entra en Yolco, donde convence a Pelias y a sus hijas, de que para que este alcance la eterna juventud lo deben de asesinar para que resucite. De esta manera muere Pelias y los argonautas entran en Yolco. Jasón renuncia al trono para concedérselo a Acasto (hijo de Pelias), quien lo destierra por el asesinato de su padre. A partir de aquí devuelven el vellocino a su templo, cada argonauta vuelve a su tierra, y Jasón y Medea gobiernan en los dominios de esta, hasta que su relación se ve truncada.
En el libro Robert Graves nos narra las aventuras de los argonautas como una especie de Homero o narrador de la antigüedad. De esta manera consigue introducirnos en un mundo mágico en el que se entremezclan los hechos históricos ficcionados con episodios mítológicos. Haciéndonos sentir los que podían sentir los antiguos al escuchar este tipo de historias en la que dioses y humanos se podían confundir. El estilo de Graves nos introduce en el mundo antiguo y en su mundo antiguo, con su interpretación personal de los hechos y sus visión de los conflictos derivados de la sustitución de la Diosa Blanca por Zeus. En todo caso es un ejercicio titánico de estilo e imaginación que nos transporta a un mundo ya casi olvidado.
El mayor pero que se le puede poner al libro es su quizás excesiva complejidad. Graves es ambicioso a la hora de relatar la mitología, las historias, las civilizaciones y a los argonautas. Pero para un lector no informado, la cantidad de personajes, historias y dioses lo hacen en ocasiones una lectura difícil y farragosa. Quizás con la omisión de algunos argonautas y algunos pasajes del viaje sería un libro menos denso y más ameno. Por otro lado la versión que Graves decide contar está ligada a las creencias, basando la epopeya en la búsqueda y rescate de una reliquia, y motivada por conflictos de religión. Sin embargo esta es una aproximación muy mitológica, y por ello atractiva, pero otras versiones más profanas como que el vellocino pudiese ser simplemente las búsqueda de oro en tierras colquideas, tal como indica Estrabon, pudieron haber sido también factibles eliminado a los dioses de la historia.
Sea como sea, el vellocino dorado, es una novela histórica/de aventuras apasionante, quizás algo difícil de leer (en comparación con la también compleja pero más amena Yo Claudio) pero sin duda fascinante en su conjunto.

Sí -dijo-, desde la llegada de los aqueos de las armas de hierro, que ocurrió hace muchos años, los clanes masculinos han sustituido a los femeninos en la mayor parte de Grecia. Los jonios y los eolios ya habían introducido grandes innovaciones, pero la llegada de los aqueos lo volvió todo del revés. Los jonios, los eolios, ya por aquel entonces, habían aprendido a calcular la descendencia a través de la madre, pero para los aqueos la paternidad era, y sigue siendo, lo único que tienen en cuenta al determinar su genealogía, y últimamente han conseguido que la mayoría de los eolios y algunos jonios adopten su punto de vista.
No, no, ¡eso es manifiestamente absurdo! -exclamó la ninfa-. Aunque es claro e indiscutible, por ejemplo, que la pequeña Kore es mi hija, ya que la partera la extrajo de mi cuerpo, ¿cómo puede saberse con certeza quién es el padre? Pues la fecundación no proviene necesariamente del primer hombre a quien yo gozo en nuestras sagradas orgías. Puede provenir del primero o del noveno.
-Los griegos intentan resolver esta incertidumbre -dijo Anceo- haciendo que cada hombre elija lo que llaman una esposa. Una mujer a quien le está prohibido tener por compañero a nadie que no sea él. Entonces, si ella concibe, no puede discutirse la paternidad.
La ninfa le miró de hito en hito y le dijo:
Tienes una respuesta para todo. Pero ¿acaso esperas que me crea que se puede gobernar y guardar hasta tal punto a las mujeres que se les impida disfrutar de cualquier hombre que les apetezca? Imagínate que una mujer joven se convirtiera en la esposa de un hombre viejo, feo y desfigurado como tú. ¿Cómo podría ella consentir jamás en ser su compañera?
Anceo sostuvo su mirada y le respondió:
Los griegos profesan que pueden controlar así a sus esposas. Pero admito que muchas veces no lo consiguen, y que a veces una mujer tiene relaciones secretas con un hombre de quien no es la esposa. Entonces su esposo se pone celoso e intenta matarlos a los dos, a su esposa y a su amante, y si los dos hombres son reyes, llevan a sus pueblos a la guerra y sobreviene gram derramamiento de sangre.
Los aqueos descubrieron que la Triple Diosa era demasiado poderosa para rechazarla o destruirla, como habían tenido intención de hacer al principio, y durante algún tiempo no supieron qué hacer. Después decidieron, en nombre de Zeus, repudiar a su anterior esposo Dione, y obligar a la diosa a casarse con él, de modo que a partir de entonces él fuera el gran Padre y ella simplemente la madre de sus hijos y no ya la gran Madre. Su decisión fue aceptada en general por los demás griegos, intimidados por la venganza tomada contra Apolo, Posidón, Rea y Atenea. Era una decisión de gran importancia ya que autorizaba a todos los padres a convertirse en cabezas de familia y a tener voz y voto en asuntos que hasta entonces se habían dejado enteramente a discreción de sus esposas.
[...] se la empezó a conocer ahora, en su nueva personalidad de consorte de Zeus, únicamente como Hera, protectora de los héroes. Para limitar su poder, los adoradores de Zeus alegaron que él era el padre, a través de otras madres, de muchos de estos héroes. Las reivindicaciones contradictorias causaron muchas disputas religiosas en Grecia, y se rumoreó que Hera había retirado su protección de todos los héroes que se vanagloriaban de tener a Zeus por padre. Los griegos se quejaban de ella, diciendo que era una esposa celosa y una madrastra cruel.
La Triple Diosa en su gracioso carácter de Ninfa no podía quedar excluida de la familia olímpica; pero perdió su antiguo nombre, Mariane, y la obligaron a contraer matrimonio con Hefesto, el dios forjador lisiado, enano y de cara sucia de hollín, que hasta entonces había sido considerado únicamente como un héroe de Lemnos. Le fue impuesto el nuevo nombre, Afrodita, “La nacida de la espuma”. Muchos de los presentes también instaron a que la Triple Diosa quedara representada en el Olimpo en su tercer aspecto principal, el de Doncella, y después de algunas discusiones fue admitida como la Doncella Cazadora y conocida con el nombre de Artemis de la Luna Nueva, pues Ártemis era el nombre principal de la Triple Diosa entre los pelasgos; pero la nueva Ártemis renació como hermana de Apolo, con Leto por madre. Sin embargo, esta concesión no satisfizo a los beocios ni a los atenienses: la diosa Doncella ejercía sobre ellos una fuerza afectiva tan poderosa en su carácter de Atenea que tuvieron que encontrarle otro puesto en el Olimpo. Después de muchas discusiones fue admitida como Atenea, pero sólo con la condición de que ella también sufriera un renacimiento, negando ser la hija de la Madre y alegando que había brotado, completamente armada, de la cabeza de Zeus; esto se hizo para demostrar que el padre Zeus podía engendrar hijos, incluso hembras, sin tener que recurrir a la matriz femenina, mediante un simple acto de su libre albedrío. Atenea se arrepintió de su intento de derrocar a Zeus y se convirtió en la más obediente y trabajadora de todas sus hijas, y en su más celoso defensor contra la ilegalidad.
Las competiciones, conocidas como los Juegos Olímpicos, fueron organizadas por el joven Alceo de Tirinto, el principal campeón varón de la Triple Diosa y descendiente por línea materna de Andrómeda. Él mismo ganó las carreras pedestres y las competiciones de lucha. Alceo, un hombre de fuerza y estatura descomunales, jefe de la hermandad del Toro en Tirinto, había llegado a Olimpia profiriendo amenazas contra los enemigos de la diosa; pero, como casi siempre ocurre con hombres fuertes e impetuosos, fue engañado con facilidad. Los partidarios de Zeus le hicieron comer y beber en abundancia y le indujeron a creer que los había forzado a otorgarle muchas e importantes concesiones a la diosa en su nueva posición -y en efecto, Alceo había hecho más por ella que ninguno otro: había amenazado con destruir la sala de conferencias con su maza de olivo forrada de metal a no ser que se acordara que no fuera mayor el número de dioses que de diosas en el Olimpo. Asi pues, cuando los aqueos introdujeron a Ares, Hefesto, y Hermes en la familia olímpica, Alceo introdujo a la Triple Diosa en dos aspectos más: como Deméter, diosa madre de los Cereales y madre de Perséfone, y como Hestia, diosa del Hogar. De este modo había seis dioses y seis diosas en el nuevo Panteón. Pero quedó claro a los ojos de todos que Alceo habá sido engañado al verse obligado a aceptar, en nombre de la diosa, mucho menos de lo que a ella le correspondía, pues ahora tanto en el cielo como en el mar, y tanto en el mundo subterráneo como en la tierra, estaba sometida a la tutela masculina; y cuando la gran sacerdotisa de la Triple Diosa en Olimpia, sentada con el cetro de cuco en la mano, en la divina fiesta de Hera, le preguntó si había actuado por traición o por estupidez, él le disparó una flecha que le atravesó los dos senos -una acción vergonzosa que atrajo sobre él la peor de las suertes. Más tarde Alceo se hizo famoso bajo su nuevo nombre de Hércules o de Heracles, que significa “gloria de Hera”, nombre que adoptó cuando dejó la hermandad del toro y se convirtió en un hombre-león, con la esperanza de aplacar la ira de la diosa a quien había lastimado. pg 47
Los arqueros de Apolo lanzaron un ataque de represalia sobre Dodona, matando con sus flechas a todos los hijos de los Cíclopes, los forjadores de Dodona, que construían los muebles sagrados para los altares de Zeus, Posidón y Hades y que se llamaban Hombres del Ojo Único porque trabajaban con un ojo protegido contra las chispas que saltaban de sus yunques.
Pelias esperaba que Hércules aceptaría el mando de la expedición, pues así Jasón perdería su gloria. Además, Hércules, que sufría ataques de locura, tenía fama de ser tan terrible con sus amigos que con sus enemigos. Era capaz de levantar repentinamente su enorme maza recubierta de bronce y matar de un golpe a cinco o seis de sus compañeros por algún insulto o alguna injuria imaginada; y luego rugía de remordimiento, y golpeaba su enorme cabeza contra la pared. pg 89
Hércules atrajo a Hilas a su lado y le dio tres o cuatro besos sonoros en el cuello y en la cara.
Lo es todo para mí -exclamó- y es el más valiente de todos. Dentro de un año o dos, ahora que ya ha llegado a la pubertad, pienso iniciarlo en la hermandad del León. No somos muchos pero, por las Serpientes Sagradas, ¡cómo hacemos notar nuestra presencia en el mundo! [...] El pobrecito es huérfano -dijo- Yo mismo maté a su padre. Esto es lo que sucedió: yo vagaba por el oeste de Tesalia en no sé qué expedición, y un buen día me sentí muy hambriento. Me encontré con un labrador dríope que araba un barbecho en un valle protegido, profiriendo las acostumbradas imprecaciones obscenas para obtener buena suerte. Yo le saludé diciendo: “Dichoso labrador, estoy tan hambriento que me comería un buey”. Él respondió con una sonrisa pero continuó con sus maldiciones, diciendo que al menos no me comiera su buey antes de que estuviera el campo arado y gradado. “Por las Serpientes Sagradas”, exclamé yo, perdiendo la paciencia, “lo haré si me da la gana”. “Ten cuidado”, dijo él, “yo soy Tiodamante el dríope, te exijo que no me hables de esta forma tan perentoria”. Y yo le respondí: “A los cuervos con tu . Yo soy Hércules de Tirinto y siempre digo, hago y consigo lo que me place. El otro día en Delfos le dije a la pitonisa exactamente lo que te acabo de decir a ti; pero ella se negó a creerme”. Tiré del trípode sagrado sobre el cual estaba sentada y lo saqué fuera del santuario. “Y ahora”, le dije, “si hace falta haré mi propio oráculo”. ¡Jo, jo! Eso pronto le hizo recobrar su sano juicio. Pero Tiodamante o no había oído hablar nunca de mí, o si no, no podía creer que yo era yo. Me amenazó con la aguijada de su buey y yo le di un golpecito amistoso con mi maza y le partí el cráneo como si fuera una cáscara de huevo. ¡Ay de mí! Yo no quería matarle. Nunca sé medir mi propia fuerza, ésta es mi maldición. [...] Él y yo pronto nos hicimos tan amigos que me lo llevé en mi zurrón. Desde entonces siempre me ha acompañado en todas mis aventuras. Dicen que su madre murió de pena por su doble pérdida. pg 93
Hércules prolongó sus trabajos con una serie de tareas voluntarias, muchas de ellas más extraordinarias que las impuestas por Euristeo. Esto lo hacía para demostrar el desdén que sentía por su amo. Puede parecer sorprendente que Euristeo tuviera siquiera un poder mínimo sobre Hércules, pero la historia es como sigue:
Después de su victoria sobre los minias en Orcómeno, Hércules (conocido antes como Alceo) había sido recompensado por el rey de Tebas con la mano de su hija mayor Mégara, pero cuatro años más tarde, en uno de sus ataques de embriaguez, mató a los hijos que tuvo con ella y a dos de sus sobrinos al mismo tiempo, confundiéndolos con serpientes o lagartos. Sus espíritus empezaron a perseguirlo. Los acostumbrados ritos de purificación no surtieron efecto porque el espíritu de los propios hijos no se puede engañar con facilidad. En consecuencia fue a Delfos para pedirle consejo a Apolo, quejándose de que de pronto sentía como le pellizcaba las piernas y le tiraban de la túnica y unas voces infantiles resonaban en su cabeza. El gran sacerdote no había olvidado la gran hostilidad que Hércules había mostrado por la nueva religión y le ordenó convertirse durante todo un “gran año” en siervo del rey Euristeo, cuyo padre Esténelo había sido asesinado por Hilo, un hijo de Hércules. La Triple Diosa en su gracioso carácter de Ninfa no podía quedar excluida de la familia olímpica; pero perdió su antiguo nombre, Mariane, y la obligaron a contraer matrimonio con Hefesto, el dios forjador lisiado, enano y de cara sucia de hollín, que hasta entonces había sido considerado únicamente como un héroe de Lemnos. Le fue impuesto el nuevo nombre, Afrodita, “La nacida de la espuma”. Muchos de los presentes también instaron a que la Triple Diosa quedara representada en el Olimpo en su tercer aspecto principal, el de Doncella, y después de algunas discusiones fue admitida como la Doncella Cazadora y conocida con el nombre de Artemis de la Luna Nueva, pues Ártemis era el nombre principal de la Triple Diosa entre los pelasgos; pero la nueva Ártemis renació como hermana de Apolo, con Leto por madre. Sin embargo, esta concesión no satisfizo a los beocios ni a los atenienses: la diosa Doncella ejercía sobre ellos una fuerza afectiva tan poderosa en su carácter de Atenea que tuvieron que encontrarle otro puesto en el Olimpo. Después de muchas discusiones fue admitida como Atenea, pero sólo con la condición de que ella también sufriera un renacimiento, negando ser la hija de la Madre y alegando que había brotado, completamente armada, de la cabeza de Zeus; esto se hizo para demostrar que el padre Zeus podía engendrar hijos, incluso hembras, sin tener que recurrir a la matriz femenina, mediante un simple acto de su libre albedrío. Atenea se arrepintió de su intento de derrocar a Zeus y se convirtió en la más obediente y trabajadora de todas sus hijas, y en su más celoso defensor contra la ilegalidad.
Las competiciones, conocidas como los Juegos Olímpicos, fueron organizadas por el joven Alceo de Tirinto, el principal campeón varón de la Triple Diosa y descendiente por línea materna de Andrómeda. Él mismo ganó las carreras pedestres y las competiciones de lucha. Alceo, un hombre de fuerza y estatura descomunales, jefe de la hermandad del Toro en Tirinto, había llegado a Olimpia profiriendo amenazas contra los enemigos de la diosa; pero, como casi siempre ocurre con hombres fuertes e impetuosos, fue engañado con facilidad. Los partidarios de Zeus le hicieron comer y beber en abundancia y le indujeron a creer que los había forzado a otorgarle muchas e importantes concesiones a la diosa en su nueva posición -y en efecto, Alceo había hecho más por ella que ninguno otro: había amenazado con destruir la sala de conferencias con su maza de olivo forrada de metal a no ser que se acordara que no fuera mayor el número de dioses que de diosas en el Olimpo. Asi pues, cuando los aqueos introdujeron a Ares, Hefesto, y Hermes en la familia olímpica, Alceo introdujo a la Triple Diosa en dos aspectos más: como Deméter, diosa madre de los Cereales y madre de Perséfone, y como Hestia, diosa del Hogar. De este modo había seis dioses y seis diosas en el nuevo Panteón. Pero quedó claro a los ojos de todos que Alceo habá sido engañado al verse obligado a aceptar, en nombre de la diosa, mucho menos de lo que a ella le correspondía, pues ahora tanto en el cielo como en el mar, y tanto en el mundo subterráneo como en la tierra, estaba sometida a la tutela masculina; y cuando la gran sacerdotisa de la Triple Diosa en Olimpia, sentada con el cetro de cuco en la mano, en la divina fiesta de Hera, le preguntó si había actuado por traición o por estupidez, él le disparó una flecha que le atravesó los dos senos -una acción vergonzosa que atrajo sobre él la peor de las suertes. Más tarde Alceo se hizo famoso bajo su nuevo nombre de Hércules o de Heracles, que significa “gloria de Hera”, nombre que adoptó cuando dejó la hermandad del toro y se convirtió en un hombre-león, con la esperanza de aplacar la ira de la diosa a quien había lastimado. pg 47
Los arqueros de Apolo lanzaron un ataque de represalia sobre Dodona, matando con sus flechas a todos los hijos de los Cíclopes, los forjadores de Dodona, que construían los muebles sagrados para los altares de Zeus, Posidón y Hades y que se llamaban Hombres del Ojo Único porque trabajaban con un ojo protegido contra las chispas que saltaban de sus yunques.
Pelias esperaba que Hércules aceptaría el mando de la expedición, pues así Jasón perdería su gloria. Además, Hércules, que sufría ataques de locura, tenía fama de ser tan terrible con sus amigos que con sus enemigos. Some familiarity with classical mythology is helpful in reading this book, which is about the Argo's voyage to fetch the Golden Fleece. The voyage itself is a remarkable one on several grounds: it is the first known and charted voyage circumnavigating the known seas and rivers of the time, that is, the Mediterranean, the Adriatic, from the Dardanelles into the Black Sea, through the Danube and over the Tyrrhenian Sea, sailing past Libya, across the desert with the Argo carried on their shoulders by its sailor-heroes, out from the Atlas mountains, back into the Mediterranean and home again to Iolcos. The journey may have been a historical one, possibly to discover a trade-route bypassing Troy, the queen of the seas. Certainly it has been replicated (with sails, not oars) in the twentieth century. The myths and legends probably have a logical explanation, not least of which was that a voyage that demanded blind courage over all other qualities, to sail under the leadership of an inexperienced youth, without a map or any navigational tool or instrument, except the stars, called for men who could only be semi-divine. A colder global climate and seismic activity in the Mediterranean might have accounted for the Clashing Rocks (icebergs?) or the rock and whirlpool of Scylla and Charybdis. Uncharted seas meant unexpected obstacles, shoals, depths, strange islets and new, often savage, peoples, rocks and currents which were ascribed to the malign influences of witches, giants and gods.
Graves is drawing upon the classical writers of old as he details the history, background and character of each of the Argo's heroes. The original number is stated to be fifty; but some of the crew go missing, die, fall ill, and more and more volunteers, each with his own lore, join the ship. The Argo's crew was just a generation off from the Trojan war. Many of those on board later have sons who did fight at Troy. The most distinguished in terms of the Trojan War is Peleus, the father of Achilles. And the most famous absentee was Theseus, held up in a little matter of discipline in Hades.
The Argo herself is the greatest heroine of the voyage, and her builder, Argus, falls so much in love with her that he is himself one of the fifty aboard the vessel. Hercules is naturally the focal point of the story, and from the moment he is carried into it, he takes over the natural leadership. He is, however, one “whom all men admire and none envy.” In his drunken moments – and there are many of those – he is almost literally a blind brute who some time ago killed his children and his wife, the nightmare memory of which drives him mad. Only drink will calm him then, and when he is drunk, he is not responsible for his actions. Jason, the nominal hero, is always shown up by mythology and by Graves as alternately boastful, autocratic and a scoundrel. Surrounded by men of far greater prowess than Jason, Graves carefully keeps him in the background.
But Jason's story is also that of one civilisation replacing an older, exhausted one. The cult of the Goddess had reached the point when there was an annual ritual of sacrifice of young men, and a ritual feast, sometimes cannibalistic in nature, when these young men, often honoured as King-for-a-Year, were slaughtered. Only, instead of being a symbolic one, a very real slaughter and feast took place, one forbidden to all males. Originally a Middle Eastern or Asiatic custom, it gradually found its way into Europe, where more vigorous men fought to establish a male dominated system of worship and eventually prevailed, but only after a fierce struggle, the history of which emerges in the Jason story in conflict after conflict with kindly but powerful male deities and crafty, cruel though still powerful goddesses or their priestesses. Here the scholarship of Robert Graves and his White Goddess finds full play, and his appendix listing sources and variants of the legend is useful.
If you don't have the time and interest to spend in the nets of classical mythology, this book might be a slog. For me, it was an absolute mine of gold and diamonds, as I looked up impossible names, forgotten to modern Greeks, but which Graves researched so diligently, and wrote about so eloquently, combining the classic Graves humour with the classic Graves poetry. I didn't always find what I was looking for, or what Graves mentions: but I always found much more.
Incidentally, the original title of the book was the rather plebeian “The Golden Fleece” (1944), later released as “Hercules, My Shipmate” (1945).

Robert Graves’ book (retitled The Golden Fleece) is an argument for the historicity of the Argonauts’ voyage, as Graves explains in the afterword. The result is a passable adventure story, with a somewhat two-dimensional portrait of human nature.
Those who urge us to read the Classics claim that they contain valuable lessons on human nature, but I find myself dissatisfied by the limited aspects of human nature that they reveal. In Hercules, My Shipmate (as in The Odyssey, I recall), all the characters seem to be consumed by pride (in many cases simply an obsession with virility bordering on machismo) and divided from each other by religious and cultural differences. Consequently, life is shown to be nasty, brutish, and short, with few exceptions. In other words, the lessons on human nature imparted in classical tales soon become monotonous.
A comparison with Shakespearean tragedy is instructive. In Shakespeare’s plays, tragic flaws are personal. In the Classics, they are cultural. In the first pages of Macbeth, it becomes clear that Macbeth suffers from ambition but that Banquo does not. Macbeth thus stands out. In the Classics, all mankind suffers from ambition, as well as from avarice, machismo, lust, and the whole panoply of vices. Some variation is evident in talent – he’s a good archer and she’s a good runner – but not in morality; and all are equally subject to Fate.
One special observation about Hercules, My Shipmate: Whereas today’s writers are discouraged from including extraneous detail, Graves packs it all in. The following passage is typical:

In this battle fell the Argonaut Periclymenus… (437)But for all that, the book is engaging, and the fate of Jason (which strikes me as a prototype for that of Meriwether Lewis) is illustrated very symbolically, in a way I’m not likely to forget.

Overall I did like this book, but I have very mixed feelings about it. The writing reads very nicely and gives the narrative an epic tone, which I liked. But as we have no focalizer and an omniscient narrator, I couldn't really connect to the characters and felt very detached from the story, it just didn't draw me in.
It is a very interesting book, though. There's a lot to learn about Jason and the Argonauts in here, and I think it's amazing how much additional information the reader is offered. Graves begins his tale way before Jason, with a religious change in Greece and how the Golden Fleece actually came to be. The struggle between the Triple Goddess and the Olympic system was extremely interesting and I really enjoyed those parts!
I also liked that none of the characters are plain and perfect heroes. I'm still not sure if there are truly any heroes in here. Hercules, for example, came across as more of a comic relief character, his stupidity and accidental brutality often had me laughing. Then there's Medea, who isn't just this evil princess but who's feelings and motives are very much analysed.
So while I wasn't drawn into the story and sometimes felt bored by the plot, I liked how much the book had me thinking all the time, and the many details it offers. I would definitely recommend this if you want to know more about this particular myth!
