I’ve noticed a number of cheap short books on Amazon, e-books and paperback versions of e-books that can be read in a single session at the computer. I wonder if the e-publishing world is blessing us with more scope for different lengths of reading and writing.

I won an e-copy of Miss Taken by Kerri Nelson recently. It has a warning about sexually explicit scenes and adult language, meant only for mature audiences. I guess my gray hairs might make me mature, but I concluded this book wasn’t one to read while sons or husband might creep up behind me. Still it’s fairly short—-only 68 pages—-so finding a safe time to bring it up on my computer wasn’t really so hard.

The format of the book is quite intriguing. A young woman, regretting the paths not taken, ends up on a path she really doesn’t want to take. The dangerous stranger who kidnaps her is too good-looking to be evil. And when he changes his mind and rescues her the chase is on.

The chase of course, since this is romance as well as adventure, takes a rather long and explicit detour to the bedroom. And the tension is released, even as it continues to build. From bedroom back to danger and flight and then… Well, suffice it to say, the ending satisfies, in all the ways the author has led you to expect.

So no, it’s not my usual style. And it’s not what I’d buy in paper and leave lying around the house. But I enjoyed the read. This e-book format seems to have other advantages besides length, and I might look forward to finding more unexpected genres as I search the internet. It’s certainly nice to know authors can break the rules and come up with something interesting and new.
