An inspiring and heart-rending historical novel that traces the intertwined lives of two men with common roots in the rugged timbering industry of north central Pennsylvania, but whose destinies and loves turn them against each other. Heartwood is more than a novel of struggle and passion. It is a loving and careful preservation of a precious part of Pennsylvania history that has all but vanished.
I have lived most of my life in the area that PJ is describing in Heartwood. I understand the history of the lumbermen, coal miners, carbon and powder metal industry. I love how he described the small towns, the tanneries, lumbering villages and people. He knows we all love kraut and sausages, hunting and out of doors! It seems like a history lesson until about page 250 when all hell broke loose! It was all leading up to the event and now I can’t help but wonder if he was describing REAL people using different names from the very beginning of the book.
