The Day Of Concord And Lexington; The Nineteenth Of April, 1775

Rate this book
It was only one day, but it was a day that mattered. French sticks to the events of what could be considered the first day of the American Revolution, but also supplies succinct reviews of political, social and economic contexts. French does not bother with objectivity, giving more credit than is due to American commanders who probably acted on rumor rather than facts, and he is merciless in his assessment of the colonial command all the way up to the ruling classes in England. He details the long preparations of the rebels for war, including their stealing of materiel and cannon from the British, the real meaning of Paul Revere's ride and the politics behind it, the mistakes of the hapless British commander Gage, and the ignominious retreat of the British to parts of New England that did not feature sharpshooters behind trees. Very disappointed that I can no longer add a new edition to Goodreads. I understand why the change was made, but I often have different covers than the ones listed here, and like to have the version I have in my virtual library.

I see that Goodreads Librarians can add alternate cover editions, and I may apply for the chance to become one. I'll keep y'all posted.

Wonderful; perhaps one of the first "modern" critical historical investigations of the April 19th, 1775.
