Incredible. I was slow and methodical through this book. It was my father's favorite book; and, sad to say, I did not get around to reading it until after his death. Peter Marshall and David Manuel climbed a mountain of research, and sifted out this amazing book. The two men found resources (pre-Internet, mind you) digging through old libraries of our nation and in other countries to show the struggle and how God, time and time again, blessed and opened doors for this little fledgling country.
“We came to see that the Great Awakening was actually a reawakening of a deep national desire for the Covenant Way of life. This yearning did not die with the passing of the Puritan era, but only went dormant. It was a desire which would produce a new generation of clergymen who would help to prepare America to fight for her life.”
I had heard, pretty much all of my life, that George Washington was a Deist. Well, not so fast. Early, obscured publications of Washington's life are brought to light that show a reality totally different, in relation to Washington's source of humility.
Another aspect of this book that astounded me was how relevant it is to our society at this very moment. As I am writing this on the day of the 2024 presidential election, this was in the final chapter of the book: "Never let yourself be persuaded that any one Great Man, any one leader, is necessary to the salvation of America. When America consists of one leader and 158 million followers, it will no longer be America." --Dwight D. Eisenhower

Wonderful research, stories, and quotes from the founders of America. From Columbus, to the Pilgrims and the Puritans through the end of the Revolutionary War, the authors pull in a lot of material to show what the founding and building of America was like, and how Christianity was very important to it. Totally LOVED this book.
