Finder is a frog in second grade who idolizes the detective Seymour Warts. Her best friends are a beaver, Chopper, and a turtle, Keeper. They all hang out together at the bog, but one morning they all wake up to find everyone GONE! They start their investigation with Big Al, an owl of whom they are all afraid. They know that since he is nocturnal, he might have seen something, and he gives them a hint: he saw headlights in the middle of the night. The trio also finds a carving on Al's tree, C.R.O.A.K., which stands for the Committe to Restore Order to the Animal Kingdom. The group believes in segregating animals, sort of like a zoo. They kidnap animals, lock them up, and leave a mysterious calling card. Their leader is the Zookeeper. Finder locates several clues, including a feather coated in goo, and a link to the Tickled Pink drink corporation. After meeting a variety of quirky characters, voyaging into suspicious basements, and having some fun during stake outs, will Finder and her friends be able to locate the denizens of the bog before it is too late?

This graphic novel is full of adventure and goofy hijinks. This has a whiff of film noir to it, especially when Seymour Warts, in his Sherlock Holmes' deerstalker cap comes on the scene. Finder is committed to solving the mystery, and her friends are along for the ride, even if they are not as serious as she is. There are lots of quirky supporting characters, like a mustachioed kangaroo covered in tattooes, Snapper, a local investigator who is a lizard of some sort, and Old-Lady Goose Liver.

The colors are very bright, but with a darker palette suitable to the mysterious content. The outlines of the characters are in very thick black lines. I love how the illustrator can convey so much emotion even though the eyes are just dots! My one quibble is that the text is very wordy and in very small font. This makes it more of a middle grade novel, so I wish that Finder had been older than second grade.

Green's Investigators, Kochalka's Banana Fox series, Eaton's Flying Beaver Brothers, Braddock's Stinky Cecil, and, of course, Blabey's hilarious Bad Guys books.

Finder is a young aspiring frog detective who sets out to solve a mystery with the help of her resourceful friends. Together the team face various challenges as they investigate the sudden disappearance of their friends and family from the bog where they live. Parallel to the young animals solving their mystery, there is a secondary (but related) mystery being solved by Finder’s role model Seymour Warts. These sections utilize a distinct color palette which helps young readers more easily differentiate the storylines as the narratives switch back and forth.

I appreciated the inclusion of higher level vocabulary to stretch students’ knowledge. I also appreciated the fact that the speech bubbles were color-coded depending on which character was speaking. The story was also peppered with puns which led to fun conversations while reading with my kid. The illustration style and color palette strike a perfect balance of not being overly cutesy while remaining vibrant making this book universally appealing.

I am a grown adult mom and even though the reviews say for kids ages 6-8, I can say this graphic novel is wonderful for ALL ages! The story grabs everyone's attention -- young and old(er) alike and keeps everyone entertained. The puns sprinkled liberally throughout the book are a hoot for the adults who are reading with their kids. And don't forget to look closely at all the details on the pages -- nestled among the amazing illustrations are more puns and fun tidbits. I highly recommend Finder's Creatures, Bog Gone! for all. I'm so happy to see this is #1 in a series -- I can't wait for the next one!

When all of the animals in Belly Acre Bog go missing overnight, the three members of the Creature Finders, Inc. detective agency are conveniently spared. But a whole community disappearing sounds like a little too much for a trio of second graders. Luckily, Seymour Watts, Sherlock Holmes of the swamp takes the case and solves the real crime while leaving the easy leftovers for the kids.

I found this book very annoying and overly simplistic. I think the kids would describe it with one word: lame.

Side note, though I don’t think it’s super intentional, there is a panel on page 79 with the word “semen” in it and an allusion to a cuss word on page 101 - “what the frog??”

There is a mystery and some humor, but something about the design didn't work for me. It's difficult to tell what age group is being targeted here as there are plenty of large expressive pages ala Dog Man, but then there's also chunks of very small text that might be a struggle for younger readers.

A 3 from me and a 5 from Eliot. It’s clever and Eliot was dying laughing at a few parts. The main complaint I have is the mystery itself, which was… um… I don’t know how to say it was basically just a bunch of made up stuff and there were no clues that made it fun for the reader to try and figure it out. But when you’re six, who needs that?

A silly mystery starring a frog in 2nd grade and her friends a beetle and a beaver. The mystery involves lots of gross green slime, anti-animal activists, a hero who might be an anti-hero, and a whole passel of missing bog animals. Give to 2nd-3rd graders.

A review from my 8 year old son: I liked this book because it is about detectives and I like detectives. It was fun watching them try to figure out why the creatures were gone. The book was exciting and funny! If you like detectives then you should read this book.

If Sherlock Holmes meet the Scooby Gang (only if they were a frog, turtle, and a taco-loving beaver), you'd get Bog Gone. These three friends try to solve the case of the missing families of their town, while the Sherlock Holmes like creature (and our young frog heroine’s favorite detective) solves a related case. The humor is typical kid and the art typical fun for the younger crowd. Ages seven to 10 the best audience, but younger could as well. The artwork is clever as each story is set in its own style. The "now and kids" world filled with bright colors and the other detective is old school black and white. Read via online reader copy.
