Rate this book
Elizabeth Phoenix is one of a select few with the power to battle those who have escaped from the darkest level of hell—demons bent on destroying humanity and reclaiming earth once and for all. Liz is determined to stop yet another Doomsday. But this time, it's going to be more difficult than ever because someone she thought was dead isn't dead anymore…and is bound and determined to destroy Liz and everyone she loves in the upcoming Apocalypse.

Liz has arrived in Los Angeles to ferret out a nest of varcolacs: half human, half dragon creatures who crave the destruction of the sun and moon. But before she can prevent the kind of eclipse that would bring the world to an end, Liz must mine the depths of her own heart. She and her former lover Jimmy Sanducci have some personal demons to battle—and there's always her mentor, the Navajo shaman Sawyer. Is he on their side or isn't he? In the end, the three of them must find a way to fight together…or perish alone.

I read this book a few days ago and have been trying to figure out how to but it all into words. I can start by saying that this is actually book 3 of the Phoenix Chronicles. It has that same basic cast of characters as the others (Liz, Jimmy, Sawyer and Summer). There is still the continuing concept of Liz as the seer, Jimmy a DK (demon killer) and Sawyer and Summers interesting input in the mix. They are all still fighting the demons, vampires and all evil from starting Doomsday / Apocalypse / Armageddon. I can't even say what this book is about (without series spoilers).

I did have such a difficult time with this one partially because of how it ended. My biggest problem was with Liz - the main characters. I think the author is trying to make her come across as a strong determined leader of the federation, but for me she came across as naive, arrogant and stupid (and I am not the type to use that word lightly) which makes for a deadly combination. I am not yet sure if I am even willing to read the next one (Chaos Bites), I have been frustrated so much by this one. But .... I will consider it if only to see how the Sawyer story rolls out (he has become my favorite character - believe it or not.)

I say that I would recommend this book, only because it is such a different type of story, but it is an acquired taste, even for a prolific paranormal romance reader.

"Apocalypse Happens" is the third installment in the Phoenix Chronicals by Lori Handeland.
I started this series a while back and read the first two novels in a day and a half. I was hooked. The bad thing was that I had to wait almost a year for the third one to be released and by the time it was I was side tracked with other releases and forgot how much I wanted to know what happens next. Good thing I came across this book the other day, because only a few pages in, I remembered how much I loved this series.

Elizabeth, Liz, Lizzy, Phoenix, Leader of the light, or something profane is what she's known as, and what she's known for is kicking evil's ass and saving the world from the Apocalypse, Armageddon, Doomsday..whatever you want to call it, it's going to happen if she doesn't stop it. Lizzy has had many hard trials in her lifetime. Death, heartbreak, betrayal, abandoment, pain and misery. Good people she's loved has died, bad people -who has died are risen, nothing comes easy for Lizzy.
As a herione, I really like her. She can be stubbron and she has to do things you wouldn't want to do, for the greater good, but she's likable. The more I read, the more I want her to succeed. And more than that, I want her to be happy, which so far has been hard.

Jimmy is another great character. Lately, he's treating Lizzy harshly, but I can understand why. I just hate that she loves him so much and he's blocking her off from himself. He's also been hurt and been through much in his life, but sometimes I just want to slap him and tell him to wake up and forgive Lizzy. I guess there wouldn't be that tension that I've grown to love through the series though, huh? Although love is a part of this story, it's a far cry from the main subject, which is to save the world from the Apoclaypse.

Summer the the beautiful, cute, spiteful cowgirl and frankly crazy fairy I've we've grown to love/hate.
There's every reason to hate her for her love for Jimmy, but I can't help but feel bad for her. Yes, she drives Lizzy nuts and is trying to take Jimmy from her every mintue she can, but I know she's going to add something to the series because that. She also seems to be hiding something and I want to find out what it is..

Then theres Sawyer. I don't know what to say about him. His character is beautifully written, but since he's not excatly a man(although, he's all man, if you know what I mean..) it's hard to judge him as one. One minute I think he'll open up and the next, he's back to being cold and distant. I don't think he'll ever act as the man Lizzy wants, but if he does, I'd love to see it. I'm actually torn on how I feel for him. There something that happens towards the end that makes us see into him more clearly and I found I now like his character more. I really am excited to see what happens next with him.

As series go, this one is for the shelves! I highly recommend this to any UF/PR readers, also those who love the undead, Doomsday novels and weird humor. Enough said on this matter, it's time to read "Chaos Bites"!

Just finished. This is the third book in the series, so I'm probably missing something. Or maybe not, because the author endlessly reiterates the emotional talking points of the book: I love this guy, he doesn't love me, I have sex with this other guy, oops, I love him too...

Fun premise: The end of the world is in the process of happening. Buffy and the Scooby gang have to stop it, and have lots of sex on the way.

Fake parts: Sex is how two of the main characters "get power" so there is a built in excuse to have lots of hot sex. And I guess it's less of a guilty pleasure if you do it for utilitarian purposes than just to have fun. Every character is some kind of half supernatural pseudo-furry. Main character is a Demon Hunter who absorbed half-vampire powers, shape-shifting powers, and pretty much everything else powers as the novel goes on. Bit of a Mary Sue. Plot is kind of spastic. You sort of get the feeling that things happen not from any kind of physics or causality, but just to create pscho-drama.

All in all: Tacky, four color premise and heavy duty emo histrionics gives this book a sort of balls out, candy coated pleasure. I had fun, but I don't know if I liked any of the characters enough to read the rest of the series. If you don't like fiction this frenetic, not for you. If you do like fiction this frenetic, you could be reading worse.

The third in this pre-apocalyptic (well definitely not post-apocalyptic) series, we continue to follow Liz Pheonix in her adventures as the leader of light to stop the coming apocalypse. And when I say stop, I really mean slow down. Through the course of the three books you get a real sense for the inevitablitiy of the doomsday that was put in motion with the murder of Liz’s foster mother Ruthie in the first book.

Additionally Liz is dealing with her decision to take on the darkness by becoming as dark as the things she is attempting to battle. Through the use of her sexual empathy ability she sleeps with Jimmy, her former dhamphir boyfriend turned vampire and becomes a vampire herself. So she not only has to deal with the dark feelings in making decisions that are difficult ones to make, sending people to their deaths, but also dealing with the darkness of evil and the whispers of that evil in her mind.

As you can guess if you have read the first couple of books in this series, the climax to the story comes from Liz and the Federation attempting to twart the latest attempt by evil to bring about the end of days by having one of the forces of darkness becoming the Antichrist. The question is really who is attempting to take on that mantle and drop the world into hell. And who makes it out at the end.

The one thing to consider with this book is that it seemed to be far more sexual in nature than the first two. It was really not nearly as off-putting as the descent of the Anita Blake series into a group sex cuddle-fest. When Chaos Bites comes out this month I am hoping to find that the sexual nature of her powers don’t become the most dominant part of her personality. My feel for it says it will not, but that remains to be seen.

Overall for the story, the evolution of the characters and the strong plot I would rate this book at 4 out of 5 stars. Well worth the money. Also worth looking into Chaos Bites when that hits the stands in the next week or two.

Well, it's been over two years since I read the first to books, so it took me a couple of pages until I got back into the story. Usually I hate when an author puts too much explanations from the previous books in it as I usually know what happened, but this time I was glad, cos it refreshed my memory and helped me to understand the story.

When I finally was back into the story it got me hooked, I liked the pace, the action and the total fu**** up relationship between Liz and Jimmy. I don't mind the happy, cosy couple, but it's refreshing to have a "couple", which is just complicated and beyond.

The story itself was nice, but I got bored a bit in the middle, when it was just pages and pages of explanations, facts and solution on how to prevent the apocalypse. I know it's necessary for a book and the plot, but it's just not my thing. Unfortunately in the end it got a bit ridiculous with all the reveals and twist and too much information was thrown out. It got a bit confusion at least for me.

I also didn't like the use of sex. It doesn't mean anything anymore. The characters have sex, because they're just horny or wanna gain something.

BUT there's always one thing in Lori Handeland books that I really don't like, it happened so far in every single book I read. This time it was a heavy presence of Sawyer. To be honest I hated that character from the first moment he appeared. I don't find him interesting, sexy, manly, mysterious, whatever ... basically he annoys the hell out of me and in the end when he finally opened up to Liz it changed anything for me. Even after this book, he unfortunately will continue to stay present.

Basically I liked the first half of the book and the rest was okayish.

Book # 17 of 2010

Another outing in the Phoenix Chronicles. I can't say that I'm entirely happy with how the ending went since one of my FAVORITE characters bit the dust, but it did clarify Liz's feelings on him and I have a few theories as to why it had to happen.

So, I think that they way in which Sawyer dies and what will happen to him in subsequent books (the teaser for the next book has him still around in some shape or another) will be an important plot point. Since we're talking biblical Apocalypse in this series, what other figure in the bible "willingly" gave up his life for the good of humanity? And what happened to him? Not that I think there's a parallel between Sawyer and Jesus, but I think there might be one between Liz and Jesus. Liz is the leader of the light in charge of keeping humanity safe from the forces of evil. Since Liz shares power with Sawyer, she has to choose to die in order to die. And if self sacrafice saves the world... I also think that Liz will have to learn to control her inner "demon" or vampire if she has any hope of winning the battle. The collar is just two convient for an epic battle between good and evil.

So there you have it. My thoughts (and mine alone, I could be completely off base) on where the series is going.

I am absolutely loving this series. I started the first one randomly on my Kindle and since I started the series I cannot put it down till I finish with the series.

PROS: The main female characters is kickass. She doesn't always have the easiest choices to make and the road she traveled has been hard but she doesn't let that slow her down. She may be a woman at heard and have those emotions but she realizes there is more at stake and follows that. There are many times when I shake my head and go man I wish Elizabeth could catch a break. I realize the world may be ending but the girl could use some positive influence in her life without there being strings, she makes the best decision to try and save the world and she still gets screwed over.

I like the idea behind the series, there is all kinds of paranormal involvement, mythology, beliefs. Everything is tied together so nicely the story sucks you in. There have been many moments where I have gone one more chapter then I will go to sleep several hours later and next book in the series I am still hooked. The build up for the end of days is really interesting.

Cons:
I can't really say there are many about the book other than man I hope Elizabeth has some good things happen to here. She is a character that she down the kicking doesn't stop even when she is pouring out her soul to help save the world. I just want some happiness for her even if it isn't a huge thing. The girl has earned it in spades!

Who wants to be alone when the APOCALYPSE HAPPENS?

Elizabeth Phoenix is called the leader of the light. She is psychic, psychometric, and very powerful. She is also a sexual empath, one who absorbs powers through sex. When a Nephilim, a fallen angel, is nearby Liz usually gets a vision that tells her all about it. Liz is also a vampire; one she keeps controlled by a tight and magical collar.

Liz arrives in Los Angeles to destroy a nest of varcolacs, half human and half dragon creatures. They crave the destruction of the moon and sun and Liz needs to prevent an upcoming eclipse or all is lost.

Jimmy Sanducci is Liz's former lover and her second in command. They love and hate one another passionately. Sawyer is a Navajo Shaman who is also Liz's mentor. She's slept with both of them and absorbed their powers. It will take all three of them working together to defeat the varcolacs. The problem though is Jimmy currently hates Liz and Sawyer may be working the other side. Liz also keeps reaching to her collar to remove it when danger lurks. Whom to trust with your life?

Lori Handeland has penned another fascinating addition to the PHOENIX CHRONICLES. Sexy and gritty, urban fantasy and paranormal readers alike will enjoy it. Handeland's world building is phenomenal and the characters are diverse and complex. Elizabeth Phoenix is a dangerous and exciting heroine that you won't want to miss!

Book 3 of The Phoenix Chronicles (Any Given Doomsday and Doomsday Can Wait are Books 1 & 2) -- Despite Psychic/Shape-shifter/Vampire Elizabeth (Liz) Phoenix's efforts, somehow the Gates of Hell have been opened and the Apocalypse is at hand. Demons are flooding the earth and if Liz can't prevent Satan from taking control, humanity will end. Her newly acquired vampire abilities are her secret weapon against the demon hoards, but she still needs to acquire the Key of Solomon and the Book of Samyaza (Satan) to stave off the Apocalypse -- without losing herself to her inner demon. With the aid of her ex-lover Jimmy Sanducci and mysterious Navajo shaman Sawyer, Liz discovers that someone she thought was dead isn't and will destroy everyone Liz loves to bring about the Apocalypse.

I've really enjoyed this series and am looking forward to Handeland's 4th novel Chaos Bites.

I really like this series overall but I'm beginning to get frustrated with the interaction between Jimmy, Liz, and Sawyer. I know this is not a gushy romance but can Liz just please catch a break with her love life. Jimmy acts like he can't stand to be around her and he doesn't hide that fact from her. And Sawyer, well....after reading this book, Liz and Sawyer's relationship went to a whole new level of f*cked up. I still like the series and I think Liz is kick ass, she does whatever she has to do....no matter the consequences. A strong, fierce heroine, imo. I'm just hoping that we get some resolution with her love life. She deserves some sort of happiness with everything else she is being put through.

I was a little disappointed with this book. It felt like the drama between the characters ate up most of the physical action. Not to mention a particular part of the book I was PO'd about. Without giving too much away, I was kinda rooting for him to get closer with Liz and now I think that's out of the question. Not to mention something else that happens shortly after that and now I'm not sure if he's coming back. I don't know where this series is going now, which is kinda interesting. I just thought that this book wasn't as strong as the other two and most of the time while reading it I wanted to smack Jimmy around.... and maybe Summer too. Oh well, I'm still exited for the fourth one to come out this year. I just hope it turns out a little bit better than this one.

There were parts of this book that I really liked, such as the glimpse into how Sawyer gained his powers, but there were also parts I didn't. I'm so very tired of the protagonist's mother turning out to be some big bad thing that's going to have some protracted battle with the protagonist. That seems to be one of the reoccurring themes in urban fantasy at the moment.

The ending was extremely powerful. I loved Elizabeth's revelation, and her reaction to Sawyer's death. I really hope he's not actually dead though, and I hope just as strongly that she doesn't have to drag his kid everywhere in the rest of the books.

I was so hoping she'd kill Jimmy. I'm very tired of him and never found him all that interesting in the first place.

Liz is still settling into her role as leader of the light. With those few key trusted people around her, they are searching for a way to stop the events that have already happened.

In this book Liz has to face up to what being a leader is all about and make some very tough decisions, ones that will affect the fight they are all facing and will also affect her personally. She learns more about herself and also her heritage. It seems like everyone that she trusts around her also has their own agenda and while they sometimes match up, they don't always.

I can't wait for the next book to see how the choices she has made play out!!

I give it a solid 4.3. I like this series very much. I have a soft spot for antagonistic relationships and I love Liz's sarcasm and her sense of responsibility. This book is pivotal to the series and I don't want to give too much away. IT IS A TEARJERKER. Normally, I don't want to be depressed when I read but this book was definetly worth it. I will say Sanducci needs to grow a set and get over himself-that's just my personal opinion. His hot and cold game with Liz makes me think of a bipolar maniac on crack. I'm eagerly awaiting Chaos Bites.

It was good but after the third book I was getting kinda tired. The humor is a nice change. But when she did the cock ring thing, the story went from urban fantasy that doesn't take itself too seriously too spoof on urban fantasy. It's a hard line to walk- on one side it's nice to have a little bit of a lighter side to all the death, doom (doomsday) vampires werewolves etc. etc. etc. But then if you go too light then it loses it's feeling of urban fantasy and turns into a spoof or parody... the cock ring put it in that territory

This book was the weaker of the three so far in many ways, but a lot of time is spent by phoenix reflecting on her life and choices she is facing. I think keeping this in mind while you read may help some readers - the stage is being set for the next book for sure. Phoenix definately has to work out some issues! Nothing is of course black and white, and she is faced with trying to decide who to trust - Sawyer or Jimmy? Other characters continue to develop. Betrayal lurks and she is forced to evaluate her feelings for those around her. It sucks being "the light"!!

Book 3 in the Phoenix Chronicles.
Wow, totally didn't see any of THIS coming!!!! No spoilers here, don't worry. This continues to be a really good Dark Urban Fantasy series (a little high on the graphic sex scale but...). I'd sure like it if each book was longer because there's so much going on that I'd like more detail. If you've been reading the series so far then you won't be disappointed with this one.

Wow...all I can say is Lori Handeland's Phoenix series is definitely one of my top five! The series is getting better and better. :-) Quite the shock at the end though HOLY...but I do have some suspicion as to who's baby was left on her doorstep in the teaser for the next book. Oh and I am beginning to despise Summer more and more!!

Looking forward to the next one.... :-D

I am really enjoying this series. I can't wait for the next one to come out. It reminds me a little of Stephen King's The Stand to a degree. It is a great storyline and the characters are pretty original. I am enjoying the love triangle and the way Liz Phoenix's journey is going so far.

Series is alright but the author uses way to much sex as filler. Would probably not suggest this book to someone unless they are really bored.
