Nobody ever picked up pulp nineties Point fantasies expecting to find literary genius lurking among the pages. So in I went searching only for a mildly interesting and enjoyably cliched diversion, and I was pleased to find my low expectations most thoroughly met.
Unfortunately, that didn't stop the occasional prose fail from making me wince. Moments which were genuinely evocative: 'She walked slowly across the muddy pebbles, the green drenched weed and the sky-coloured pools.'
Sit alongside gems such as this: 'Maria thought: Oh, what have I done? I'm hopeless. I don't know what to do. On the other side of the fire, Josquin thought: Maria loves someone else... damn him! And anyway, why should she look at me...she's a princess, for God's sake!'
...and so on. *cringe*
But despite the simplistic plotting and occasionally excruciating writing, this is actually a very enjoyable adventure story with a number of original hooks and an interesting twist for a showdown. It's not even as cliche as it first appears.
Once I'd suspended disbelief and settled myself down for some good old cheesy fantasy, I actually rather enjoyed it. Nice to see that the author has also written at least one other novel set in the same universe.
This is another of the books I really enjoyed as a child. It's quite simplistic, but I liked the characters and storyline. It was good to see some link-ins with the other books, with the fireflies and the magic used.
I liked a lot of the characters - at least the good ones. I liked Maria and Phillipa and the way they changed and adapted as characters. I also liked their relationships with Josquin and Gerain respectively.
When I first read the book, I wasn't expecting the ending. I liked the world and the people and creatures in it. I didn't like Maria's parents at all, or Ferrian. None of them were very nice characters.
This was a much-loved book when I first discovered it - I used to re-borrow it from the library repeatedly because I just enjoyed reading it so much!
All these years later, I couldn't even tell you what it was about, but I can tell you it exceeded all my expectations and was probably one of my earliest fantasy obsessions. I remember great characters and some really imaginative ideas. Would love to get my hands on a copy to re-read it!
