"There are many ways to use your head," begins author and illustrator Jo Ann Stover in her rhyming picture book They Didn’t Use Their Heads. "Anything is possible, No matter what you choose, As long as you remember that your head is there to use!" The book centers on the misadventures of certain whimsical characters and at the same time makes an unforgettable case for good behavior. Originally published in 1960, this classic story has been restored for a new generation of readers. Similar in style to the popular If Everybody Did, this amusing and thought-provoking book will appeal to both children and adults.
Not to get too picky here, but the exclusive focus on the head/mind seems to be a truncated view of how an individual functions. Children in this book make bad decisions because of poor rationality, but don't we make many good and bad decisions because of the spirited and appetitive parts of our being as well? I would have given it 1 star, but it does bring up a number of practical and moral ideas for kids to think about.
