She Slipped and Fell

Rate this book
Tina Jones is alluring and outspoken. Kendall Long is sexy, yet delicate. Whether separate or together, these stunning best friends tend to cause quite a stir among the male population. An innocent fall, however, propels their friendship to a new plateau -- one where each is compelled to explore and confront her sexuality. She Slipped and Fell alternates between each characters' point of view, for only Tina and Kendall can decide whether or not their friendship, and love, is strong enough to endure the humility that is oftentimes associated with being different. Will Tina and Kendall risk stepping outside of their comfort zone into unfamiliar territory, defying society, God, and their families, in their quest to discover who they truly are?

When my friend first told me about this book, I figured I'd read it for the poor writing and implausible storyline just to pass the time. What I found was a book about two women discovering their sexuality in a very realistic way. Tina and Kendall's relationship mirrors the story of so many women who love women in my life. I do wish some things went more in depth. There were times where I felt the narrators were rushing over details that would have lead me to understand them better, but in the grand scheme of things it didn't really matter. It was still a very enjoyable read.

I think the book is a great book, where two friends fall in love and as the reader we experience the good, the bad and the in between with them. The author did a great job of writing this story. Its not only a lesbian story, but a story about two friends who loose touch but when a tragic incident happens they somehow through unforeseen events reconnect and try to figure out why they split up. As you read this story from the perspective of both of the main characters you experience each of their feelings and thoughts. You learn how each one feels, thinks and even acts. It can be a little hard to follow at first, but when you keep on reading eventually you know each character individually. Even though the book is short, when you read this you feel like you’ve known them for years. The author does a great job of keeping the reader invested in the story and what happens with each character. The way Kendall and Tina become friends in the beginning of the story, shows how different this book was. Most stories don’t start with friendships starting in a bathroom, where the characters eventually become best friends and lovers. When these two met, they didn’t know each other but eventually became close and inseparable. When they went to college both of them had boyfriends, whom they loved and cared for, but one night when they were cleaning up after a party at their dorm something happened. After partying and getting drunk and having to clean up, Tina went into the kitchen and slipped and fell on her behind, when Kendall heard the thump she ran to the kitchen and slipped and fell on top of Tina. They were drunk and thought this was funny, when Kendall brushed a piece of hair from Tina’s face and kissed her. From this point forward, they took a journey and tried to figure out their relationship as best friends and lovers. They also had to figure out what they were going to do with their boyfriends. They go through the journey of life, love, and loss. I think this book is great for anyone who is starting a relationship with a friend or someone they have known for years. But the book is not only about these two people falling in love and figuring it out. After dating for a year or so, they split up and move away. Tina and Kendall go on with their lives and figure out what they are going to do after the break up. Kendall gets raped b Tina’s ex-boyfriend, who actually kills Kendall’s parents also. Tina not knowing any of this until she comes back home and sees Kendall in the hospital with her baby, Tiara, where she was going to work. From there on they both talk and fill in the gaps as to what happened. The rest is history. This story is a very beautiful one that flourishes, dies and re-flourishes again.

This was my first time reading a book like this

I didn’t know what to expect fully but I was surprised and disappointed
It was a short book and it felt rushed at times, which made some of the writing seem subpar but the story was sweet.
Everyone loves a good love story, especially one where the two find each other again
I wasn’t expecting the tragedy and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it being added, it felt a little random
Overall it was pretty, not great but not bad.

Again a very good job Shonda..

Emotional

This was a first work I read from Shonda. It was an emotional read, I cried for what Kendall went through. I'm glad her and Tina reconnected. I would recommend this author to my peers.

Living in your truth

Its all about living in your truth.....which it is hard to do. Their story is 1 that a lot of people share. It shouldn't be that hard to love whomever you want to love.

This book wasn't at all what I expected it would be. At first the point of view alternates between Kendall and Tina, but the majority of the book is told from Tina's side.

The book takes a really dark turn that I never saw coming, which in a weird ways is usually good because it makes the eventually happy ending that much more happier, but just when I thought it would get deep, the author seemed to skim over the details. I just think the book could of been more meaningful then it actually was.

I've read a lot of books where people in a relationship or on the verge of one had hurdles they had to get over, but the fact that this is a relationship between two women who are best friends that have never been in a relationship with a woman added a whole knew dimension of problems a man and woman would never have. That's why I thought this book would be great, but it was only OK for me.

She Slipped and Fell was a story about best friends Tina and Kendall who “slipped” one night; crossing the line between friends and lovers. Their one night together opened doors that neither one of them were ready for. Tina fell hard for her dearest friend Kendall, and was willing to go public about their relationship. Kendall on the other hand, was still well tucked away in her closet and was not ready to come out. That act of selfishness on Kendall’s part ultimately destroyed not only their relationship, but their friendship as well. After years of separation, the two were reunited, and proved that true love could withstand the test of time.

I wish that I had nothing but rave reviews to offer regarding She Slipped and Fell. Unfortunately, I found it to be a hard read because of the tense inconsistencies, along with other grammatical errors. The repetition in the beginning was annoying. Both Tina and Kendall told the same story one after the other, which forced me, the reader, to have to re-read the same scene twice.

She Slipped and Fell, in my opinion, has not had any professional editing. I found myself focusing more on the errors within the manuscript than the actual story itself. Shonda, the author, had a great story idea but fell short in her delivery. Everything just seemed to run together. There was no structure and that caused the story plot to be poorly executed. Needless to say, I was very disappointed as I read this novel. She Slipped and Fell truly read like the work of an amateur writer.

*I am not a professional reviewer. The above is my personal opinion.*

This was a very enjoyable story - I finished it in one sitting. I liked that it was more than an "f/f erotica" read. In fact, the sex parts were not at all central to the story (though I did not know this going in, LOL). The narrative follows two women, Tina and Kendall, from high school to their late-ish 20s. Though both characters were likable and relatable, I felt more invested in Tina, as I think her character was a bit more well-developed, and we get to see her growth and thinking more than we do Kendall. Also, Kendall does something pretty grimey at the beginning of their relationship, which I think soured her to me.

There is one big Tyler Perry-ass twist in this book and I *literally* gasped, rolled my eyes, and put my e-reader down when it happened. It was *insert DIS TEW MUCH meme here*. The author actually expands on this outlandish turn of events and offers resolution, but sheesh. Was it really necessary? Seemed like a cheap, albeit well-developed, ploy to advance the plot. Anyway, all in all this was an entertaining read. And: the editing was actually really good! I can't say how many of these little black romance books (lesbian and hetero) I've read that have a decent-to-good narrative but with appalling grammar mistakes and typos that really take away from the story.

Overall: this was a worthwhile, quick read - I recommend!

This is by far one of the best urban/African American (AA) Lesbian books I've ever read, and I don't claim all I've read because some are just that bad. I gave this book a chance out of desire to find and read good AA Lesbian romance. Well written is an understatement and just doesn't give Shonda justice as a writer. I was very surprised to see how realistic the plot was! There were no huge gaps or un-linear twists making the story come full circle. And as a Sorority woman I could tell Shonda did her research when it came to Sorority and Fraternity Life, especially when illustrating "groove" parties and "strolling." I've reread the book at least 10 times because that's how much I enjoy it!

it has to be one of my favorite urban/lesbian books by far. I could read it over and over, in the beginning I have to admit was rough, getting through the repetition of each situation through both Kendall and Tina's eyes. I think the author has a great way of catching your attention, and being able to pull the rug up from under you. I had to say I shed some tears through it, due to the fact it a home for me. Kendall and Tina's love for eachother was captured almost perfectly. I have to admit while reading this book I did notice some grammatical errors, but by then I didn't care I was truly engulfed in this book.

As with Does My Head Look Big In This?, dialogue occasionally slips into the expository, and some of the descriptions - particularly the sexual ones - are over-the-top to the point of being corny. But really, there are so many het romances that have ridiculous dialogue and corny descriptions (hi, every Regency I've ever read), and I enjoyed seeing it in a lesbian romance for once. Additionally, at the core of this book is a story of two lives lived - mostly together, but sometimes apart. It's a good story.
