Fifteen-year-old Katie has met the perfect guy – or so she thinks. Skyler is handsome, exciting, and rich. It doesn’t matter if he’s older and she keeps their relationship a secret – true love is true love – no matter what age. But Skyler’s false veneer soon reveals a darker story. Little by little he lures and brainwashes Katie into the sex trade, until she is in so deeply, she has no choice but to satisfy the desires of every man who knocks on her hotel room door. Her days are rife with violence, abuse, and shame. There are only two ways escape or suicide. If she escapes, Katie risks the lives of the people she loves, but if she takes her own, Skyler will only continue to trap young girls into the sex trade. When Skyler forces Katie to lure her friend into his brothel, Katie realizes she needs to stop everything before it spirals out of control. Will Katie overcome her fear and save her best friend, even if it means risking her own life?
This was an eye opening story about the realities of sex trafficking. After reading this book, you will no longer be able to turn a blind eye to the horrors and tragedies associated with this crime. Donna takes the reader on a journey through how a victim is lured, groomed, exploited and finally imprisoned. This is a book I want to share with my students; this is a book I have shared with my 15 year old daughter and this is a book that I think everyone needs to read in order to understand the magnitude of this modern issue. It is not a thing of the past, and it is happening in our cities, schools and neighborhoods today and someone you know could be held captive right now. I appreciated Donna's reference to my local city; it certainly made the story more personable. However, regardless of where one lives, this book will resonate with you long after you finish the final chapter.
The storyline is tragic yet eye-opening in how human trafficking can happen so quickly. The story of Katie is emotional yet very educating. I'm glad to have read about it, especially being based in Thunder Bay, a city that has to be traveled through to access the rest of Canada by vehicle.
