A Compelling Reason Maggie Rose, the spunky and friendly twenty-year-old middle daughter of Michigan resident Jacob Kane, feels compelled to leave her beloved hometown of Sandy Shores to pursue what she feels in her heart are God's plans for her life-in New York City.
The Distractions
Working with great passion and energy for a charity program that transports abandoned children to families in towns all across the U.S., Maggie Rose thoughtfully pairs each orphaned child with a good, loving family. But will the "distractions" finally stop?
A Competition for Affection
As two men-one a fellow coworker and the other a newspaper reporter-compete to gain the attention and affection of the beautiful Maggie Rose, will she win the struggle to maintain her focus on God and remain attuned to His guidance?
After 31 years of teaching second and fourth grades, Shar decided to say, "Bye-bye, Students!" and "Hello, Writing World!" and it's been an interesting, exciting, challenging, and inspiring adventure. One thing she knows for certain—God dropped a seed of passion for writing in her heart back in the summer of 2000, and He's been growing it ever since. She signed on with Whitaker House Publishers in early 2006 and in December of that same year released Through Every Storm, a general fiction title that finaled in the American Christian Fiction Writers Book-of-the-Year. Another general fiction title, Long Journey Home, hit shelves in 2008. (It is her pleasure to announce that both of these titles are also available in SPANISH.)
Sharlene’s beloved, bestselling “Little Hickman Creek Series” released in 2007-08. This 3-book series set in 1895 KENTUCKY won the “Road to Romance” Reviewers’ Choice Award and a third place standing in the Inspirational Readers’ Choice Contest in 2008 and 2009. Also, in 2009, her historical series, “The Daughters of Jacob Kane”, began hitting bookshelves in stores countrywide. In late summer of 2010, Tender Vow, another general fiction stand-alone, will release, and following that, a 1920s 3-book set called “River of Hope”. The first in that series, River Song, should become available in the spring of 2011. Yep, you guessed it – Shar is BUSY!!!
Shar has done numerous book-signings across the country, appeared on many national television and radio shows, and participated in countless interviews. She has been married to the love of her life since December of 1975, has two wonderful daughters and two handsome sons-in-law. The joys of her life, however, are her adorable grandchildren. Besides her involvement in music at her local church, Shar has been a speaker for the local MOPS organization, is involved in KIDS’ HOPE, USA, a mentoring program for at-risk children, counsels young women in the international APPLES OF GOLD program, and attends two bi-weekly Bible studies. She and her darling husband, Cecil, live in Spring Lake, Michigan with Peyton, their loveable collie, and Mocha, their big, lazy cat.
1904. Maggie Rose is the middle daughter of Jacob Kane. She’s spunky and innocent at twenty years old when she leaves her family’s home in Sandy Shores, Michigan in response to God’s call to work with orphans in New York City.
Upon settling in at her new job, Maggie Rose is appalled by the painful pasts of many of the children at Sheltering Arms Refuge. Though she misses her family, she’s amazed by her immediate response to the unfortunate orphans. Each of the children touches Maggie Rose’s heart in a special way, and she finds herself loving them all with whole-hearted love and compassion.
Luke Madison is a news reporter who’s recent losses have left him cynical, hard, and obsessed with finding someone to blame for a tragic shipboard fire that took the lives of over a thousand women and children, including his own aunt and his adored fiancée. His editor firmly removes him from the story that’s too close to his heart, and hands him an assignment covering the city’s street orphans—starting at a family-owned and operated orphanage called Sheltering Arms Refuge.
Between Maggie Rose and the handsome reporter springs up an instant, indefinable animosity…and unwelcome attraction. She needs to focus on her ministry with the children. He’s still in love with a memory. She can never give her heart to a man who doesn’t share her love for Christ. He holds God responsible for his pain and loss. Even the orphans’ sad fates give Luke more reason to turn his back on his Creator.
In this second volume of The Daughters of Jacob Kane, the author paints a vivid picture of caring and compassion, of obedience and dedication to the call of Christ, of love and loss and love renewed. Sharlene MacLaren’s ability to breathe warm, heart-pumping life into her characters is key to the success of her wonderful tales. Maggie Rose is without a doubt character-driven, yet an equally strong, believable plot helps keep the pages turning and the reader’s interest and emotions invested right up to the last line of the last page. Within its pages is a masterpiece of storytelling that contains all the essential ingredients: mystery and suspense; poignancy and pathos; love and romance; humor and heart.
Maggie Rose is an enlightening ride on the early nineteenth century orphan train. By the last rail station, the reader’s heart is waylaid and held hostage by the children, captivated by the innocence and fervor of young Maggie Rose, and forever lost to the journalist who didn’t want to be a part of the story.
Another great read from author Sharlene MacLaren! This is the second book in the Daughters of Jacob Kane series.
Maggie Rose leaves her home of Sandy Shores, Michigan to answer God's call to help at an orphanage in New York City. Leaving her family and being on her own for the first time, she realizes that surrendering herself to God's call is not so easy. However, the children at the orphanage soon earn special places in her heart as she discovers her passion for children and helping those who have been abandoned, neglected, and abused. Just as she is settling in, a newspaper reporter shows up, working on a story about NYC's homeless children, but he has problems of his own. Maggie struggles with her growing attraction to this man, getting to the bottom of why he is so distraught and lacking in his faith.
Again, I am fascinated by the characters in this story. I felt a great compassion for the children. As with the first book, Hannah Grace, I am again looking forward to reading the next book in the series and I won't want it to come to an end. This book, like the first, is filled with inspiration. I was moved by the characters' faith and the inspirational messages that are found in the story. The characters learn that, in the end, trusting God is most important.
In a blog/book giveaway that I wrote earlier this year, I stated that historical romance is not my most favorite category. Thanks to acclaimed Christian Fiction author, Sharlene MacLaren, I have been won over. Big time.
Sharlene has written two out of a three book series titled The Daughters of Jacob Kane. I was fortunate to win a copy of Book One Hannah Grace. This book was so enjoyable that when Sharlene requested volunteers to review Book Two, Maggie Rose, I was typing a response as fast as my little fingers would go!
Here’s a brief synopsis: In 1904, Maggie Rose, the middle daughter of Jacob Kane, feels called by God to leave her beloved hometown of Sandy Shores, to work at Sheltering Arms Refuge in New York City. This orphanage also transports homeless children to towns across America to match them with comparable families. Most of these children have such painful pasts that Maggie can hardly bear it, but she marvels at their resiliency. As she gets to know each child better, she finds her heart full of love and compassion.
When a newspaper reporter arrives to stay at the orphanage to gather research for an article, Maggie is struck by his handsome face and very concerned over his lack of faith. Still, she cannot deny their mutual affections. Will she win the struggle to maintain her focus on God and remain attuned to His guidance?
I had as much trouble putting Maggie Rose down as I did Hannah Grace. Sharlene has a wonderful gift of bringing the reader into the story. I was captivated from page one as I joined Maggie on her train ride to New York City. The orphans’ history was so compelling that I wanted to run to the nearest adoption agency and adopt every child there.
Fortunately, my husband is much wiser than I am and in this case, his wisdom prevailed. As every excellent romance novel should be designed to do, I fell in love with the newspaper reporter hero, Luke. Here is a man who has walked through the “valley of the shadow of death.” Anger and bitterness rule his heart; slowly but surely, his heart is softened by the love of God shown through Maggie and the orphaned children. A heart-warming story, this book is one that you will want to read and keep in your library to read again in years to come.
Yahoo! Sharlane MacLaren has a new book out! I absolutely loved her first series (with Loving Liza Jane, Sarah My Beloved and Courting Emma) and when Hannah Grace came out as the start of a new series I was so happy. Now we have the 2nd book in this series, Maggie Rose, and I am loving it! I am not quite finished, but will be in the next 24 hours and I can't hardly wait. I purposefully went into this book without reading the back of the book so I would know as little as possible about it so I would be surprised by everything and I have been eating up every tidbit of info that comes my way as I am reading... Maggie Rose leaves family and friends behind in Sandy Shores, Michigan and heads to NYC where she feels led by the Lord to work in one of the orphanages. Here she meets the orphans there and learns their heartbreaking stories and then enters Luke Madison, the newpaper man who has been sent to do a human interest story on the orphanage but who is dealing with his own tragedy and heartbreak. At this point in the story the orphans are getting ready to board one of the orphan trains to take them West to new families (hopefully) and both Maggie and Luke will be going along - I can not wait to see how this is going to go and end up, even though I'm pretty sure I have the romantic interest aspect all figured out . The only problem with Maggie Rose is that when I'm done reading it, I'll have to wait for "Abbie Ann" to come out so I can follow the exploits of the Daughters of Jacob Kane series even farther!
Just like all of her other books, I loved it! It was full of action, romance, and truths of God. The characters were all fun to get to know through the book and I’m hoping Abbie Anne’s book includes debuts for both Luke and Maggie. The reason I didn’t give it five stars is because I wish it would have included 1) more adventures outside of Sheltering Arms where they actually were in the city and 2) more of Maggie’s interaction with specific orphans. she didn’t start describing her personal relationships with each child until they got on the train and Rose Marie got sick. Also most of the description of her interactions with the children were through Luke’s eyes and I would of loved to have a few scenes from her perspective.
All in all i loved the book and am excited for the next.

Since I've read the first book in this series, Hannah Grace, I decided to read the next one. As much as I absolutely loved the first one, I loved this one as much and more. I loved it so much, I reread the pivotal chapters again to see it all come together again.
For anyone who loves a good romance, these are a good read. For anyone who loves scripture and good romance, these are a must. They are wholesome and I wish there were more books like these.
Maggie has her hands full when she moved to NY to work at an orphanage, but with God's intervention, things work out. Luke is about to land on her doorstep, and her heart will never be the same.
Loved it soo much, it brought out so much emotion, from the classical happiness to sadness, from anxious to despair, I loved the characters and i love how the author has molded this beautiful and inspiring story.
A good story about loss and hiw to move on to taking care of the orphans, follow God's leading & finding your passion. I found this story to move a little slower than the 1st.

Maggie Rose Kane, has a deep conviction that God wants her to go to New York. Convincing her father was another story, but eventually Jacob Kane conceded that he should not stand in the way of the work of the Lord. So, twenty year old Maggie, finds herself on her way to NYC to work in a orphanage, Sheltering Arms Refuge.
Luke Madison, a news reporter was a young man deep in grief and anger. Gaining justice and seeing people answer for their actions was his goal. His aunt, fiancée and her mother had all died in a tragic accidental fire aboard a ship. Negligence was the cause and he was bent on seeing someone pay.
Two people from very different lives, with different view points, and beliefs both wind up at the Sheltering Arms Refuge. Maggie as a new employee, sent on a mission by God. Luke, to do a story for his newspaper, sent there by his boss.
Follow along as they rescue a young orphan girl from a seedy brothel/saloon. Cry as they board the “orphan train” taking their young charges to new families. Stand in awe as God works in each of their lives, and draws them close.
The second book in the Daughters of Jacob Kane Series, Maggie Rose easily stands alone. This book will not require having read the first one, to understand it and enjoy it. Sharlene MacLaren has written a book, a story of love, redemption, faith and hope. A story that will give you insight into the history of the orphan trains. A story that will touch your heart, and make you want to read more about the Kane daughters. Definitely a book to share with friends and family. Next is Maggie Rose's story, and it's quite riveting from the very first page! Maggie Rose is the "entertainer" of the family, and she had me in tears (of laughter) more than once, especially with her many attempts at singing. :)
She's always had a soft heart for children, and has been steadfastly praying for the Lord's guidance in her life. As it turns out, He sees fit to send her to New York City to help out at an orphanage, Sheltering Arms Refuge. Here she meets, and quickly falls in love, with a houseful of orphans who are waiting to find permanent families to love and care for them. Sheltering Arms also transports these homeless children across the country, via the railroad, searching for qualified families.
Not long after arriving at Sheltering Arms, Maggie Rose meets Luke Madison. Luke is a newspaper reporter who has been sent to write an article about the shelter, and their effort to match the orphans with loving families. He isn't too thrilled about his new assignment as he would rather be working on another article that is close to his heart -- maybe too close, which is why his boss saw fit to relieve him of that particular duty. He doesn't think Luke is capable of writing an unbiased story, as his heart is completely tied up in the tragic event.
Maggie Rose and Luke work together to help Maxine reunite with her dear friend, Clara, otherwise, she refuses to leave on the next orphan train. She's not leaving without her! Luke devises a plan to rescue Clara, and Maggie inadvertently ends up tagging along, much to Luke's dismay. Maxine and Clara's stories are heartbreaking, as are all the orphan's, but they make the overall story that much better, in my opinion.
You won't be able to help falling in love with these dear children! They had me laughing, and crying, right along with them. :)
This is the second book in the Daughters of Jacob Kane series. Maggie Rose is both beautiful inside and out. She is such a kind, compassionate person. Maggie Rose is called by God to go far from home to work at an orphanage, from her home in Michigan to New York. While there she meets Luke a hard, sad man, a newspaper reporter. Find out what makes him so hard and sad. They both fall in love with the children and the workers at the orphanage and then they even take the children on the orphan train West to find families. With this add intrigue, mystery and evil people and you have a story worth reading. I love the characters of this book; also you hear more about the characters from book one in this series, Hannah Grace. You will see what happened with Maggie’s family and how they keep moving ahead. You will read about some of the things orphans had to endure and live through in the 1900’s in New York. How the orphanages were a help and an escape for many of the children. I like the love story of Maggie Rose and Luke. How they each had to put God first and go on with their lives. I recommend this book Maggie Rose and all of the books in The Daughters of Jacob Kane series. Really excellent books. Sharlene MacLaren really knows how to write. You will love this book as I do.
Thank you to Whitaker House for providing this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255
The second in the Daughters of Jacob Kane series. Maggie has heeded the call from God to work with orphans in New York City. As her heart and compassion for these children grows, so does her attraction and affection for Luke Madison, a man nursing his own broken heart.
I found this story fascinating from a historical standpoint: the plight of orphaned children and those who helped them. The account of the orphan train was compelling. I think I enjoyed Hannah's story more, but Maggie's was just as engaging, if a bit more preachy.
An easy, engaging read. I'm looking forward to the last book of the series.
Book 2 in the Daughters of Jacob Kane series, by Sharlene MacLaren, is sure to bring pleasure to the reader of historical fiction. Centered in the teeming streets of early 1900′s New York City, MacLaren takes us on a journey rampant with action as Maggie Rose Kane and reporter Luke Madison struggle against their growing attratcion for each other and their overwhelming desires to bring hope and homes to the waifs at Sheltering Arms Refuge.
This book was a fine read, and well researched. It made me want to follow the path of Maggie and Luke farther than the end, always a plus for the author.
I gave it 3 stars because it was well written, had no bad language and was overall a very clean book. It was predictable and cheesy. It took me a long time to finish reading it, there we're many nights I went to bed without even picking it up, that tells me that I really was not into it. It is the secong in a series of 3 books and I'm not really looking forward to reading Abbie Ann, the last book, but I will. I guess I just have to finish what I started. I may just not be in the mood for cheesy romance, who knows!
Another great book by Sharlene MacLaren! I thought I wouldn't like this one as much because Maggie moves away from Sandy Shores, but I fell in love with all of the people at the orphanage just as much. My only complaint with this book is that I think there should have been a little more time between Luke losing his fiance to falling in love with Maggie. I thought it would have been a little more believable to me if maybe a year had passed instead of just a few months since her death. I've already started Abbie Ann and will be sorry to see this series end!
Because I am a Christian, I have the desire to read uplifting books which inspire values, character, and courage. The downfall, in my humble opinion, is that most Christian fiction is a bit over-the-top. The characters balance on the line of unbelievable because they are too squeaky clean, always behave prcisely accurate, and never have a negative thought. For those reasons, I give his book three stars. I enjoyed the emphasis on service to less fortunate children, but found the cast of characters entirely underwhelming.
Well...I'm not sure I can say enough about this story. I loved it! The story line was very interesting. Reading about the orphans on the streets of New York in the early 1900's was heart wrenching and inspiring. I just wanted to adopt all of the children in this story. Sharlene doesn't disappoint when it comes to uniqueness of plot and being able to keep me wanting more. The story and romance between hero and heroine was very believable and handled well. Boo Hoo...only one more book left to this wonderful series!
I liked this book alot though perhaps not quite as much as the first one in the series. It was a bit coincidental that I was reading it right after I moved away from family and friends for the first time ever so I could really sympathize with the heroine in the book. Though I think she dealt with the homesickness a bit better than I did! :-)
Why is it when you know pretty much from the get-go how a book will play out you still want to read it and enjoy doing just that? Such is the case with Maggie Rose. This is a nice Christian romance and encouraging second book in the series The Daughters of Jacob Kane. It sort of makes me wish Mr. Kane had more daughters.
Very well written. Lots of history about the issue of homeless children in this time and place as well as the orphan trains. You were drawn into the heartbreak and the tragedy but bouyed up by the realistic characters with hearts for their mission. Will definitely read the rest of the books in this series.
I can't wait for more books in this series. The good thing is that ach book doesn't leave you hanging...or I couldn't stand it! :) The next book picks up with a side character from the previous book. Love this series!
Another sweet book in the series. Maggie Rose Kane follows God's call to work in an orphanage in New York. I was pleased that this book included an orphan train experience because I've always been interested in that part of history.
