Satyajit Ray

Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.

Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.

Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Early Life and Background:
Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.

Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.

Literary Works:
Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).

Awards, Honors and Recognitions:
Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

*I read this book under the POPSUGAR READING CHALLENGE 2020 for the prompt "A book with an upside down image on the cover"*

I had trouble figuring out how to go about with the rating since this is an anthology and I had different opinions about each story so I finally decided to rate each of them individually, take out the average and then round it off to the closest rating.

Individual Ratings :

The Hungry Septopus - 1/5
Bonku Babu's Friend - 2.75/5
Bipin Chowdhary's Lapse of Memory- 3.5/5
The Two Magicians- 2/5
Anath Babu's Terror - 4.5/5
Shibu and The Monster- 3.5/5
The Pterodactyl's Egg - 2.5/5
The Vicious Vampire- 1/5
Patrol Babu, Filmstar - 4/5
Indigo - 2.75/5
Danger in Darjeeling- 2.5/5
Kailash Chowdhary's Jewel - 4/5

Okay, so the average is 34/12 = 2.8
Hence, overall rating = 3 stars.

One Dozen Stories is a compilation of Satyajit Ray's best short stories by Puffin Classics, translated from Bangla to English. Now although the estimated rating comes to be 3 stars, probably because I really enjoyed a couple of the stories, I found myself not caring for the majority of the book.

I was really excited about this book and prepared to thoroughly enjoy it, especially because years ago I had read Anath Babu's Terror and loved it a lot (even this time I have it a 4.5). So it was sorely disappointing when I found myself barely being able to get into most of the stories. Maybe the charm of these stories got lost into the translation, I do not know. The translation wasn't bad at all Some were translated by Ray himself and others by Gopa Majumdar. And the translation was simple and not too heavy on ornamental words. But at the same time, I found some stories just bland. The writing although simple and nice was not compelling t me a all. And some stories were outright ridiculous or excruciatingly boring. I liked The Hungry Septopus and The Vicious Vampire the least. It had nothing interesting to offer to me.

But there were also some that I really liked-apart from Anath Babu's terror which was thoroughly exciting and quit unexpected-such as Patol Babu, Filmstar and Kailash Chowdhary's Jewel. There is really nothing that special about Patol Babu's story except for the fact that I could really relate to certain aspects of the character's story and his entire predicament when he was called to this Film shoot and the way he was treated, and him feeling small briefly. It reminded me of a few times that I had gone for some shooting (short films and modeling). It just felt really personal to me and that's why I enjoyed it immensely. Kailash Babu's Jewel was a delightful mystery tale with Ray's famous private detective, Feluda, and his sidekick cousin, Topshe. The ending took me by surprise and all in all, I quite liked the entire story.

I was diasspointed by the end of Danger in Darjeeling which otherwise was going quite nicely, until well, the end. It was so similar to the ending of Bipin Chowdhary's Lapse of Judgement which I quite liked and gave a 3.5 rating. The rest of the stories ranged from mediocre to quite interesting. However, I am not going to indicidually touch each story now. I just mainly wanted to talk about my favourite ones.

So in a nutshell, while some stories were definitely great, I wouldn't really say that I was happy wih the overall book.

A good story should change the way you see the world." – Chuck Palahniuk

"The most beautiful things are those that madness prompts and reason writes." – André Gide

"Ghosts are real, this much I know." – Stephen King

"A short story must have a single mood and every sentence must build towards it." – Edgar Allan Poe

"There is no exquisite beauty… without some strangeness in the proportion." – Edgar Allan Poe

"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." – H.P. Lovecraft

"Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us." – Oscar Wilde

"Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen." – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

"Fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in the mind." – Dale Carnegie

"Children see magic because they look for it." – Christopher Moore

"Life, uh, finds a way." – Jurassic Park

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that." – Martin Luther King Jr.

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." – William Shakespeare

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious." – Albert Einstein

"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." – Sherlock Holmes

"The past is never dead. It’s not even past." – William Faulkner

A collection of 12 stories by Satyajit Ray- The Hungry Septopus, Bonku Babu's friend, Bipin Chowdhury's Lapse of Memory, The Two magicians, Anath Babu's terror, Shibu and the monster, The Pterodactyl's egg, The Vicious Vampire, Patol Babu Film Star, Indigo, Danger in Darjeeling and Kailash Chowdhury's Jewel. Translated from Bengali by Gopa Mazumdar, three stories have been translated by Satyajit Ray himself. These stories bring alive a magical, bizarre, spooky and sometimes scary bunch of characters. The stories are a toast to Ray’s literary genius. What makes the collection unique is the story in which Feluda makes his very first appearance (Danger in Darjeeling) and story in which he makes his third appearance - Kailash Chowdhury's Jewel

I don't often read short stories. I always feel that there's some part missing which was needed to be mentioned. In short, it makes me feel incomplete. I start desiring to know more, provided i started enjoy reading it. I was unmindfully moving in the library in search of a good book when suddenly my eyes fall upon this book - One dozen stories by Satyajit Ray. I immediately picked it up because i thought i would be able to read a collection of stories, that too by an Indian author. At that time i didn't have any idea about the popularity of the author. I didn't know that in my hand i was carrying a book written by the Bharat Ratna awardee - the highest civilian award of India. I later came to know that Satyajit Ray was an eminent film maker, director, script writer and an author. That made me feel good about my choice.

This book is a collection of twelve stories ranging from mystery to spookiness. All stories have one thing in common, the characters were addressed as Babu, which showed author's connection with his home city. I would also like to mention the four stories that entertained me the most, these were The Hungry Septopus, Anath Babu's Terror, Patol Babu, Film Star and the Kailash Chowdhury's Jewel. In the last two stories, Satyajit Ray introduced his new character Feluda who was the lead character in all his mysterious tales. I wouldn't say that i didn't like this character, however there are some changes that i would like to suggest.

First that the character Feluda is quite young and doesn't actually possess the qualities of a detective. I am not expecting him to imitate Sherlock Homes, but there should be an aura of high intelligence and fox-like cleverness surrounding him, which was missing in the story. I personally like the stories where the author has chosen random topics for the narration. Some even ended with a moral which sounds good to a reader. Overall i enjoyed reading his stories and i am really looking forward to go through more of his works.

My Rating - 3.8/5

This collection is a most valuable jewel box; inside it are a dozen precious gems! Satyajit Ray has done magic with his pen! Though I have read some of his works before, these are many amazing stories of multiple themes. This book is a translation of the Bengali collection Ek Dojon Goppo (One Dozen Stories). I must mention the translator of nine stories, Gopa Majumdar, especially because she has done an excellent job here. Ray himself has translated the rest of the stories. I have given some information about each story below. I deeply regret any of them containing spoilers.

Hungry Septopus is a funny story about a carnivorous plant with a monstrous appetite for meat and its owner, Kanti Babu (Kanticharan Chatterjee). He is dedicated to the study of such carnivorous plants. One day, he sees his friend Parimal, a writer, to seek help for a particular situation in his house. Parimal was an excellent hunter in his younger days. Kanti Babu does not disclose this weird situation for which he is asking Parimal's help but insists on bringing his gun. Parimal assures him he will visit Kanti Babu, accompanied by a friend Abhijeet. Thus, Parimal, Abhijeet, and Abhijeet's dog Badshah, a Rampur hound, visit Kanti Babu's house, and the rest is an astonishing account of events. This story contains fun, horror, and interesting scientific facts about botany.

In Bonku Babu's Friend, We meet the meek and mild Bonku Babu (Bonkubihari Dutta), a teacher who teaches Geography and Bengali at Kankurgachhi Primary School. He is such a gentle person that nobody has ever seen him getting cross with anyone. He is pranked as a ritual by everyone in his village and students in his school. Whatever everyone does or says to him, he never gets angry. One night, returning after his usual chitchat with his friends, Bonku Babu meets an Alien named Ang from another planet, Craneus, who considers his people superior to the people on Earth. The rest of the story is about how he proves his point and gives Bonku Babu some wisdom to stand up for himself. Ray beautifully blends the rural life of a typical Bengali village with science fiction!

Bipin Chowdhury (Bipin Babu) completely forgets a part of his life, specifically his visit to Ranchi in the following story, Bipin Chowdhury's Lapse of Memory. He enters an entirely chaotic phase in his otherwise orderly life for some days. Bipin Babu has no intimacy with anyone and doesn't even have any close friends. His world revolves around his books and office; nothing else matters to him. One day, he meets a stranger who asks about his Ranchi visit a few years ago. Bipin Babu dismisses this stranger, who claims to be an acquaintance from Ranchi, telling him that he has never visited Ranchi in his whole life. After that, Bipin Babu's mind occupies the conversation with the stranger about this unknown Ranchi episode in his past. He doubts his memory and concludes that he is going through memory loss. Rest is the story that tells us how a person's behavior can turn his life upside down.

The Two Magicians is a story about the rise of a magician, Surapati, to fame. On a train journey to his next big show in Lucknow, he meets his old magic guru, Tripuracharan Malik (Tripura Babu). They recollect Surapati's journey from being an enthusiastic aspiring young magician under the traditional teachings of Tripura Babu to how Surapati left his guru to become the pupil of an Italian magician, Shefallo. Shefallo teaches him how to be a good performer on big stages with the help of gadgets, thus removing traditional Indian magic from his mind. How he understands the old tricks taught by his former guru is superior to the artificial performances that frame the rest of the story.

Ananth Babu's Terror deals with people's obsession with ghosts, haunted houses, and superstitions. I found it a very amusing story with a tint of horror. Sitesh, who narrates the story, meets a peculiarly dressed Ananthbandhu Mitra (Ananth Babu) on a train journey to Raghunathpur. Ananth Babu comes to Raghunathpur for a particular reason: to spend a night in the famous two-hundred-year-old Haldar Mansion. To be specific, to spend a night in a room in the mansion facing the west, which is believed to be haunted! This story has a good plot with supernatural elements and unexpected twists.

In Shibu and the Monster', Shibram (Shibu) believes that his Maths teacher, Janardan Babu, is a monster under the influence of his friend Phatikda (Loony Phatik). Whatever facts Phatik feeds him about monsters, Shibu finds them all real in the case of Janardan Babu. Thus, the maths teacher becomes a monster in Shibu's life. It is a funny story that tells us the nature of imagination and its role in the minds of small kids.

In The Pterodactyl's Egg, a depressed Badan Badu goes to the riverside for calmness. He has to make a good bedtime story for his seven-year-old invalid son, Biltu. That is the reason for his depression. On the riverside, he is disturbed by a strange man who introduces himself as a scientist. This man shows Badan Babu an instrument, which he claims to be a time machine that he has made himself. He tells stories of his many visits to the past and future. He shows a Pterodactyl's egg to Badan Babu as proof of his visit to the Jurassic Age. The rest is how Badan Babu gets his ideas of bedtime stories for Biltu.

Vicious Vampire is a story that deals with the narrator's dislike or fear of bats and vampires. He decides to spend a few weeks in a place called Shiuri to work on a research project on the terracotta temples of Bengal. Through an acquaintance, he arranges his stay at an old house at Shiuri. On his first day, He finds some trouble with a bat inside his room. Then, he meets a spooky person named Jagdish Percival Mukherjee. The narrator is forced to believe this man is a vampire because of his strange behavior.

Sitalakanto Ray (Patol Babu), once an excellent actor in stage dramas and jatras, gets a chance to act in a film. The story Patol Babu, Film Star tells us how Patol Babu achieves his ambition to act in that one scene he is given. This is the story of a person who thinks what the mere sum assured him as a wage for his acting is when measured against the intense satisfaction of a small job done with perfection and dedication.

Indigo is a spooky story that narrates Anirudha Bose's terrible experience while traveling to Dumka. He is interested in the old indigo plantations in ancient British India. He planned to stay for a few days in Dumka with his friend Promode. He sets on his journey in his car, driving himself alone. On the way, he gets flat tyres twice. He finds that he took a wrong turn somewhere, and now he is stranded in some countryside away from his actual route. He finds a small cabin, and from the man of the shelter, he finds a Dak bungalow near the cabin. He spends the night there and finds himself in the weirdest, eerie situation.

Danger in Darjeeling is one of the two Feluda stories in this book and is the first story that introduced the famous Bengali detective Feluda (Pradosh C. Mitter), Satyajit Ray's most famous creation. A twenty-seven-year-old Feluda (as the narrator of all the Feluda stories, Tapesh Ranjan Malhotra, a.k.a Topshe, a cousin of Felu, calls him) starts his investigation of the mystery behind a threatening letter received by a gentleman named Rajen Babu. I found it an exciting story, as it was my first Feluda experience.

The last story of the collection, Kailash Chowdhury's Jewel, is also a Feluda mystery and Satyajit Ray's third Feluda story. In this story, a famous Feluda investigates incidents that revolve around a precious blue beryl stone.

These stories made my past week wonderful!

This is a wonderful collection of short stories. Much enjoyed it for its language which has a certain verve and lightness about it. My favourite has to be the story about Bonku Babu's special friend, for sure the inspiration behind popular Hindi and English movies.

How I Chose It?

It is a puffin classic, same publisher as Listen O King, caught it on the cover suggestions. The upside down bat cover was enticing enough, I was already reading an Indian classic & was looking for more, hence caught hold of this one.

First Impression
A dozen stories, first up was A HUNGRY SEPTOPAGUS. Reading the first few pages, I could have a clear idea what I had signed up for.Crisp, original, Indian thriller/horror. It made me long for Byomkesh! As the story progressed, after a long time, I could clearly envision the world Ray had spun.It held my interest tight & thus I dived deeper.

Analysis
The stories continued, some above average, some excellent. The tone was near same, extra ordinary occurences to ordinary people or sceanrios. An officegoer in Calcutta wanting a quiet place to sit and spin stories fr his special child, inturn finds a conman who takes his money but provide enough churning to his creative juices.A bullied school teacher finding courage to stand for himself after a friendly alien encounter! This one was a clear winner. A ghosthunter. A magician seeking validation from his past. A temple explorer who could not get rid of unwanted company of bats. I have seldom come across such brilliant and engaging characterisation.
The flow of stories is smooth, length good enough & interest value very high. You may guess the endings, but you will definitely love the journey to reach the ending of each story.

Highlights
For me it was the characters and the power of the author to make you see the exact scene in your mind.
My favourites are Anath Babus Terror and The Viscious Vampire.
A ghosthunter sleeping in a haunted house on a rocking chair, only to wake uo to see a fan on the ceiling being rocked by a rope coming from the doorway! A green eyed middle aged vampire sneaking through the window of a cottage. Scenes Crystal clearly etched in my mind for a long time to come.

What it is not
The re-read value is not same for all stories. You may want to skip few when you pick it up again.

Overall analysis
Satyajit Ray’s magnificent portrayal of Indian thrill genre is enticing and vivid. I felt like coming home after reading a wholesome Indian fiction classic.

Read it. Gorge on it. Its a winter special.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

This was my first read of some of Satyajit Ray's finest work and I can't wait to read more of his work. As the title suggests the book has 12 short stories that fill you with excitement every time you start one and never truly ends till you've reached the end. Ray is so definite with his character description that make you stick with the story for long after you've read it. Feluda is my absolute favourite and not so far behind are Bonku Babu and and Patol Babu.

P.S. I would like to thank my friend for gifting me this absolutely amazing novel and leaving me wanting for more of Satyajit Ray's work.

Satyajit Ray is one of those unputdownable writers whose stories can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. I love this style of writing, the simple, linear stories that offer up a twist at the end and just keep you turning the pages.

It is a pretty good book. I found initial few stories little boring but it was not the story, it was my mood which wanted things fast. This was written at a time when life was slow paced and once I admired that I loved all the stories. Very well written

Rereading various books on my shelf as I decide what to donate and this is definitely a keeper. Pretty sure this collection sparked my love for short stories. After watching the Apu Trilogy this summer I admire Ray’s polymath ass even more— he truly could do it all.

Quite easily amongst the most disappointing of reads I've come across. Some of the stories are barely engrossing while some of them are utterly unbearable. I've not watched any of his movies, if this book were to mirror his film-making prowess, which I hope not, I would have to down my expectations to the very minimum.
