The author has undertaken a most ambitious project with translating the poetry of Rumi, word for word. I do not understand all of the poems here, although many are beautiful, and I highlighted many passages. There just seems to be something missing in the translation—perhaps the lyricism and magic of the rhyme—perhaps some of the mystic nature of Rumi’s philosophy. While one can still greatly enjoy reading the words, it’s almost like listening to a singer who is tone deaf.

I love Rumi’s poetry and philosophy, because it is one of light and love. And it encourages all of us to find the light and love within. And I feel blessed to read his words centuries after his death, translated into an accessible language. But unfortunately it is that language and that translation itself which prevents me from enjoying the poetry to its fullest. I appreciate the translator’s efforts, but poetry should really only be translated by other poets.

Refreshing

This was a fast read for me and very enjoyable. Here are two poems that really stuck with me.

If you are lucky, love has something to do with you. Don’t count age without love, because it does not count. Each moment passing without love will be embarrassed before the Truth.

Be faithful in an unfaithful world.

First time hearing about Rumi

This was my first experience with Rumi. While I think there was something lost in translation in some of the prose, other parts were beautiful. If you are an avid fan of poetry or looking for some positive affirmations, this may be right for you.

Deceptively simple

Short poems and sayings to ponder and even fall asleep to, which I accidentally did and dreamed a conversation with the poet. When I woke, l !had no idea what we said, but I am sure it was very deep!

Beautifully Written

The stanzas here take a moment to resonate, but are heartfelt and headstrong. Beautiful and require a moment to take root. I appreciated these words as they fester in the memory.

This was very repetitive, but there were some lines that I really loved. Overall, the book will always be special to me because my grandfather gave it to me for my birthday this year :)
