Then one day a mysterious white mist transports May and Lee back in time, to the land of their the shores of Lake Michigan in the 1830s. The white man is settling the land, wiping out the forest—and threatening the very existence of May and Lee's tribe. By the time they discover the secret meaning of their journey to the past and the message they must bring back to the present, it may be too late. May and Lee may be trapped in the past forever.
This is a fun adventure story with a sweet message about identity and environmentalism. It’s biggest problem is that it is by a white author writing from the perspective of an Indigenous person. The book was written in the 1980s, and most people weren’t aware at the time how problematic that is.
