For more than a quarter century, Al Pacino has spoken freely and deeply with acclaimed journalist and bestselling author Lawrence Grobel on subjects as diverse as childhood, acting, and fatherhood. Here, for the first time, are the complete conversations and shared observations between the actor and the writer; the result is an intimate and revealing look at one of the most accomplished, and private, artists in the world.Pacino grew up sharing a three-room apartment in the Bronx with nine people in what he describes as his "New York Huckleberry Finn" childhood. Raised mostly by his grandparents and his mother, Pacino began drinking at age thirteen. Shortly after he was admitted to the renowned High School for Performing Arts, his classmates nicknamed him "Marlon," after Marlon Brando, even though Pacino didn't know who Brando was. Renowned acting coach Charlie Laughton saw Pacino when he was nineteen in the stairwell of a Bronx tenement, and the first words out of Laughton's mouth were "You are going to be a star." And so began a fabled, lifelong friendship that nurtured Al through years of not knowing where his next meal would come from until finally -- at age twenty-six -- he landed his first salaried acting job.

Grobel and Pacino leave few stones unturned, touching on the times when Pacino played piano in jazz clubs until four a.m. before showing up on the set of Scarecrow a few hours later for a full day's work; when he ate Valium like candy at the Academy Awards; and when he realized he had been in a long pattern of work and drink.

As the pivotal character in "The Godfather" trilogy and the cult classic "Scarface," Pacino has enshrined himself in film history. He's workedwith most of Hollywood's brightest luminaries such as Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet, Michael Mann, Norman Jewison, Brian De Palma, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Gene Hackman, Sean Penn, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, and Robin Williams, among many others. He was nominated for eight Academy Awards before winning the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in "Scent of a Woman," Pacino still seems to prefer his work onstage to film and, if he's moved by a script or play, is quick to take parts in independent productions.

"Al Pacino" is an intensely personal window into the life of an artist concerned more with the process of his art than with the fruits of his labor, a creative genius at the peak of his artistic powers who, after all these years, still longs to grow and learn more about his craft. And, for now, it's as close to a memoir as we're likely to get.

My favorite quotes from the book:
1. I went to Performing Arts because that was the only school that would accept me. My scholastic level was not very high.
2. I was brought up on many different writers from Balzac to Shakespeare. I know I come from the streets and had no formal education, but I read this stuff, and it's the Russian that I really felt.
Reading saved my life.
3. And I love movies. I loved them even more when I had this guy once explain to me what film really is. You never know where you're going to learn something.
5. Al doesn’t play a character, he becomes the character.
6. When he’s sitting in a restaurant eating for a scene, he’s not acting—he’s eating!”
7. James Caan remembered how, during The Godfather, Pacino was the “weird guy in the corner. I think we all knew at the time that that guy in the corner was mushrooming into probably one of the greatest talents of all time in our industry.”
8. It is quite clear that Al is a loner.”

Not one word of spite or contempt from this man about the work he's done or the people he's worked with. His love for acting and Shakespeare, as well as his sense of humour comes across quite well through these interviews.

I feel I know more about him as Al Pacino, instead of the stereotypes of his acting roles. What I see is a classy person, full of compassion, generosity and integrity. Some of the questions do get repeated over the years, but in context, it helps give a window of his growth as an actor and as a man. His responses are never parroted, just authentic.

This book is a keeper.

Great read. You get to see the friendship develop between the actor and the interviewer and read some of Al Pacino's opinions in his own words. I'm sure there had to be some "shaping" or "editing" but the book feels like an insider's view which, as an outsider, tends to be what we (the audience) are looking for. And I really loved how classy Pacino is when speaking about colleagues and/or projects. He knows that any little thoughtless remark could cause immoderate damage so he speaks with care, but you don't ever get the sense that he is regurgitating a party line or being untrue to himself. I think his voice and his passion for acting come through this book quite clearly and enjoyably.
It would probably scare him to hear it, but I think you end this book feeling like you know him; and for me, that is a good feeling.

"And in an age of commerce, Al Pacino just may be the last artist standing". No truer words have been spoken. Al Pacino is an amazing man and my all-time favourite actor. I absolutely adore him :) This book was special for many reasons but mostly since Pacino doesn't do many interviews. For this to be so intimate and informative is a true gift for any Pacino fan and Lawrence Grobel sounds like a really cool guy; any close friend of Al's must be cool. This was a joy to read.

This book was always going to be enjoyable for me as I'm a big fan of Al.

The book is set out in a transcript question and answer style format , which is interviews done with Al over the years.

There are some personal and difficult questions asked and I really enjoyed reading a little more into the life of one of the greatest actors of his times.

Hoo-ah!! I doubt there’s a movie watcher who hasn’t had a slice of Pacino at some point of time. What a treat he is. Delicious!!

A shy, introvert who worships his work to the level that he didn’t give any interviews for almost 10 years since he first hit the scene. Why? Cause he didn’t want the personal aspects of a star impact how the audience perceives his work.

This book is a series of conversations Al has with Larry - who is a journalist-turned friend. It does a great job in giving us an insight into Al’s mind and personality, his love for theatre, his relationships, his love for characters and the importance of discipline.

I would have loved if the topics also steered to movies like Scent of a Woman, Heat, Donnie Brasco instead of just the Godfather Trilogy and Scarface. On the contrary, he hailed Nolan as a visionary and a game-changer back in 2002, when only Memento was released - so I guess I’m good :)

This series of conversations with interviewer Lawrence Grobel over a number of years is as close as most of the public is going to get to Al Pacino. Famously reluctant to discuss his personal life, which he believes to detract from his work as an actor, he talks about many aspects of that work and about some of the films that have defined it. Despite his reticence, many aspects of his personality come across in these talks, his humor, his dedication to his craft, family and friends, and his relationship with words, writing and fellow actors, his attitude to directors and directing, and what still fuels his drive after a long and distinguished career. In lieu of a detailed biography or memoir, and apart from documentaries like "Looking For Richard" this is as much of the actor's actual personality as we're likely to see. - BH.

A disappointing read. A collection of interviews rather than a biography in the purest sense.

Didn't really get a feel for who Pacino is as he ducked probing questions with glib responses and gravitated more to talking about the art of acting, Shakespeare and some of his personal projects (which tanked).

Ont the plus side, it prompted me to check out The Local Stigmatic on YouTube in which I discovered the worst British (cockney) accent since Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins or perhaps Johnny Depp in From Hell. (Seriously, how did nobody involved in these movies tell these ridiculously well-paid actors how bad their accents were?)

Regardless, it reassured me that Pacino is not on the same level as De Niro my hero. I look fwd to reading his biography next... And hope to get more rock n roll anecdotes than thespian boredom.

This Man!
Al doesn’t play a character, he becomes the character. The one I like those most of all, though, is Al Pacino himself. And what a character! He will always be my favorite actor.

An incredible biography of an actor who is arguably the greatest actor of the late 20th and early 21st century. The author was the first interviewer to whom Pacino ever opened up, and both became fast friends over the decades. One of the pluses of the book is how it brings out the passion and dedication that Pacino has for acting on the stage, and it becomes apparent where his heart truly lies. Apparently his portrayals of Richard III are astounding (available on DVD).

This book is so nice and the interview is free flowing and amazed that Al Pacino love movies by Tom Hanks,John Goodman.

This book is a treasure and most of his movies I have in my DVD collection and make a lot of sense out of his frank views on several topics on plays, movies

He never acted in any Shakespeare plays reason being noone offered him a role in any.----

Where do I start?!? Being that he is one of my all time favorite actors, it was interesting to see how the legend himself has such a passion for what he does! He's such a deep individual I truly enjoyed learning how he dealt with life and his acting career. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Pacino as much I do!

This book was amazing for me because I discovered Alfred James Pacino through his biography composed of interviews. I was impressed by his appreciation for Shakespeare's works, his shyness and his way of playing famous roles with authenticity . For me ,definitely, he is the greatest actor alive.

Al Pacino is undoubtedly one of the best actors in Hollywood and in modern cinema. The range of Al's acting abilities helps him create memorable film characters that will always be easily recognizable and beloved to every film enthusiast (like me). The way he portrayed his characters, whether he's Michael Corleone or Tony Montana or Serpico, Sonny Wortzik, or Lt. Col. Frank or Jimmy Hoffa, he molds himself into them and simply becomes the character. That's one of the reasons why I love him so much. Another reason is how humble he is despite his success in the entertainment industry. Another reason is how he takes his work so seriously. Another reason is how he doesn't take himself so seriously. Another reason (although this seems a bit trifling) is how I find him so handsome :)

It's obvious how much I respect and adore the man and I could write a dissertation about how I'm such a big fan of him and his work; I am here to post a review of this biography based on Al's life and career.

So basically this book is just a collection of interviews that the author Lawrence Grobel accumulated over the years since he first interviewed Al after he starred in the Godfather. We get to see Al Pacino as himself; shy, a little bit cautious, reserved but with a dry sense of humor. We get to read his origin story; the story of his childhood, the story where he got the acting bug, his traumatic experiences in his twenties, and his acting gigs before he made it big.

We also get to read how his life changed when he started working in Hollywood steadily and it spans at least 3 decades where a lot has happened in his life; during his hiatus in the mid-80s, becoming a father, and moving out of New York (where he was born and lived all his life) to live in California.

The interviews between Lawrence and Al are interesting; it's fascinating to read my favorite actor's insights on his works, his opinions, and his recollections. My favorite part of the whole book is the foreword which Al himself wrote.

I'm really glad I saw a copy of this in our local bookstore and I audibly squealed when I saw this book. I grabbed it right away and purchased it without even reading the blurb or checking out the contents of the book. I knew I would have fun reading this book and learning new stuff about my favorite actor, knowing I'll like him even more after I finished reading this book. Turned out I was right.

This book is a must-read for all Al Pacino fans out there.

Beginning with the 1979 Playboy interview and ending in 2005, this collection of print conversations between superstar Al Pacino and interviewer-extraordinaire Lawrence Grobel are essential biographical documents of how one of the greatest actors of my generation thought about his craft, his past, the business, the theatre, his relationships, and art’s impact and importance in the world. The personal friendship that ultimately formed between these two men influences what they talk about, how they talk about those subjects, and how revealing Pacino becomes during them. The playful sparring they do as Grobel asks piercing and sometimes embarrassing questions of the actor - who responds with backtalk, incredulity, annoyance, but ultimately answers them truthfully - is a definite highlight throughout the book.

Not my cup of tea.

More of a collection of interviews than an autobiography. Great insight into Al Pacino's life. To be honest I already knew most of the stuff in this book from all of the hours of interviews with Al I watched on YouTube. But this book has a different approach. The author and Al are actually very good friends so there is an interesting dynamic to the interviews.
