Collecting Hack/Slash #'s 11-17, as well as the first ever Hack/Slash Annual, Volume 5 includes Cassie and Vlad's run-in with Herbert West of Reanimator fame and a spot by Evan Dorkin's Milk & Cheese. In the Annual story, Cassie faces one of her toughest challenges yet as she sets out to save the Suicide Girls from a dangerous killer.

I adore this series. I hated the Reanimator movie but Herbert West fit right into this world during the crossover and didn’t bother me one bit. Cool artwork throughout this one too.
This was a great volume. We get: a non-slasher killer, and the morality of murder; a crossover with Bump, a series I'm totally unfamiliar with, but which is quite creepy; a really weird Wizard of Oz -themed issue that I could never decide if I liked or not; a really good 3-part crossover with Herbert West, where a lot of hanging plot threads are brought together, and Cassie's family gets involved; and, a highly mediocre crossover with Suicide Girls. The individual stories are pretty good, but we're also getting more and more foreshadowing and updates of the other characters besides Cassie and Vlad, so it's clear the series is finally really accepting it's Ongoing status. Anyway, this is still one of my favorite guilty pleasures.
Hack Slash is a guilty pleasure. And clearly I enjoy horror more in graphic novel form than in video. The art remains fairly good, the story may be getting a bit old. Volume 5 was essentially just more of the same. 3.5 of 5.
