This book actually has 4 stories in it, I have decided to review each one (briefly).

Wolf Moon by Nora Roberts
While backpacking her way through Italy, Simone had a life altering event. She started trying to find a solution, while living in a small town in Maine, with her loyal and well trained dog, Amico. After meeting the new town veterinarian, Gabe Kirby, she now has more than one reason to complete her search.
*****(5stars) Really wonderful story, makes you hope for that kind of true love. Refreshing point of view, fun, funny and very fast paced. Almost too fast paced, I would have loved this one to be longer.

Moon Witch by Jill Gregory
Gwynna of Callemore, novice moon with, knew the only hope for her sister Queen Lise was to go to the Valley of the Org and destroy the evil sorceress Ondrea. In her quest, she asked for information from Duke Keir of Blackthorne, the only person ever know to have returned from the Valley of Org.
****(4stars) This is a very intense story with a lot going on at one time, the magic of the moon witch, the despair of the valley, and the uncertainty of how or what to do to accomplish the goals. I wish this story could have had more details added, the character interaction is wonderful and empowering.

Blood on the Moon by Ruth Ryan Langan
With all of the Highlanders in fear of the approaching Laird Reginald Rothwicks warriors, Alana Lamont was not sure what to do with her band of orphaned women and children. Maybe with the Dark Angel in their forest they had a chance. Could just one man make the difference in their survival and their lives, against such a ruthless force.
*****(5stars) Ruth Ryan Langan never fails to create a collection of characters that touch the heart and take you to a time of mystery and strength. This was a heart wrenching and heart warming story that could have been drawn out to a full book on its own.

West of the Moon by Marianne Willman
Phoebe Sutton knew she had a place at Thorne Court. Finally arriving, Phoebe discovered that Lord Thornwood had recently passed and his nephew, Gordon Tremaine was the new Lord. Feelings from a time that Phoebe and Gordon had nearly been engaged tangled in with Gordon’s cursed life. The Kingdom of Faeries, had Gordon now and though he tried to keep Phoebe away and safe, she may be able to help him escape the curse of the last seven years.
****(4stars) Rich descriptions of the Faeries world. Really great characters if only the story was longer to really get to know them. Once the scene was set, it was over. A good story that could be made great, it just went by too quick.

This is a great book, all of these stories are wonderful, this review is written as a result of reading it for the 3rd time.

2/5; 2 stars; C

Nora Roberts' female protagonists have, in my opinion, slowly evolved to a 'type' that shows up in story after story. I don't like it. Its boring.

In this story she's:

beautiful,
independent,
sexually confident,
self sufficient to a painful degree,
incredibly organized, early riser, gets more than is humanly possible done in any given day and still has time to moisturize (with magnificent products she's developed herself), exercise, and now, apparently, teach herself how to run an electron microscope, do high level biochemical research, and train dogs to a level of perfection rarely seen outside the Shutzhund ring.

This story was ok. Despite the very sudden 'love at first sight' angle, there was a sweet love story in there somewhere. However, if you've read a pile of shapeshifter PNR in recent years, this one won't add anything to your world IMO.

I'm a huge fan of Nora, especially her writing as J. D. Robb for her In Death Series, this was such a disappointment. The writing in this story didn't flow well and didn't feel like her writing. She usually has a gift for blending characters well, but these two were stilted, flat and not believable together.

Wolf Moon - Nora Roberts - 4/5 - Props to Nora for writing a werewolf story in which the heroine is a werewolf trying to cure her condition. We even get to see a transformation. Gabe, the veterinarian, is her partner and apparently soul mate as there is quite a bit of insta-love here. This was an enjoyable read.

The Moon Witch - Jill Gregory - 2/5 - Gwynna, Princess of Callemore needs to get into teh Valley of Org to defeat a witch who has her sister under a spell. She goes to Keir of Blackthorne who apparently has already braved and survived the Valley of Org, for a little guidance. He refuses, she goes anyway and he follows. Along the way they battle vampires, other monsters and fall in love, rather quickly. That's it. It's not very good. Clean romance btw.

Blood on the Moon - Ruth Ryan Langan - 2/5 - The Dark Angel, Royce, has been fighting against Rothwick's soldiers for 6 years, and Alana's village is being targeted. After being rescued by the Dark Angel, her family takes him in so he can help protect the village. While there, he and Alana fall in love, but he acts all alpha and like a chauvanist male, getting mad at her for trying to fight back (although he is simply trying to protect her). Turns out he's a virgin too.

West of the Moon - Marianne Willman - 3/5 - Phoebe arrives at Thorne Court where she encounters Gordon Tremaine, a man she was once engaged to...thinking them too young to get married, Gordon is sent off to India and told he can marry her when he gets back. He never returns. Turns out, he did come back, but got trapped into some faerie bargain and now that Phoebe is at Thorne Court, they're trying to lure her as well. While trying to protect her from forever being trapped among the faeries as he is, they fall in love once more. This story was rather confusing and I didn't particularly care for the characters.

Wolf Moon: I'm a huge fan of Nora Roberts, but I was incredibly disappointed in this short story. Simone is attacked by a wolf and is turned into a Werewolf. So far so good. She becomes obsessed w/finding a "cure" for it. 11 yrs later. Enter local vet Gabe. Again, so far so good, her wolf takes him to mate, but she can't tell him about herself, or her "virus." By the end, he finds out she's a werewolf and helps her cure it. HEA--human ever after. I was kind of saddened. I had hoped that he would be a wolf too, or he'd help her come to terms with it.

Jill Gregory's story is about a young witch/princess who sets off into an evil land to save her sister from an evil sorceress. She enlists the help of a Duke who is the only man ever heard of to return from Org. They fall in love, and save her sister and everyone else. It's a cute story.

Ruth Ryan Langan's is a very sweet love story about a Highlander, Royce, who is nearly killed at age 13, but survives and lives in the forest to help kill the evil warlord who threatens the highland way of life, and the Lady Alana has been taking care of the victims who seek refuge. Royce and Alana triumph (with ghosts) and find love.

Mariann Williams' story is really confusing, but good. It starts out in Faerie, switches to a dark and stormy night, back to faerie, a human in faerie. It's really hard to keep track of some of the switches, but if you're patient it's a cute story

Here are the reviews of the remaining three novellas in the anthology Moon Shadows. For Wolf Moon review go to the book in question.

The Moon Witch Review:

Stars: 3 / 5
Recommendation: Anthology filled with magic and romance along with the fitting moon element making Jill's story a much pleasure one to read.

The Moon Witch is the second novella in the October 2004 anthology Moon Shadows written by Jill Gregory. The novella is a collaboration between four authors - Nora Roberts, Jill Gregory, Ruth Ryan Langan and Marianne Willman - with tales filled with moon, magic and love.

Princess Gwynna of Callemore sets out an unusual and difficult journey into the Valley of Org to bring back her sister. However she seeks out Duke Keir of Blackthorne Keep, for he was the only one who had come out of the Valley of Org alive. But Keir does not want to do anything with Gwynna or her quest or the Valley of Org. Will Gwynna convince Keir enough so he can guide her? Will Keir succumb to her quest and follow? Will she bring her sister back?

Another 93 page novella filled with magic and romance along with moon element to keep with the theme of the book. Interestingly enough Jill Gregory is noted for her western historical romance. However here she has a novella filled with romance but with magic that is contrary to her other stories.

Flair of writing and strong characters has made this story by Jill very interesting. For those who want easy reads, this is a good start.

Blood on the Moon Review:

Stars: 3 / 5
Recommendation: A decent enough plot for a novella, with romance and paranormal elements. An easy read for those lonely nights or busy days.

Blood on the Moon is the third novella in the October 2004 anthology Moon Shadows written by Ruth Ryan Langan. The novella is a collaboration between four authors - Nora Roberts, Jill Gregory, Ruth Ryan Langan and Marianne Willman - with tales filled with moon, magic and love.

Alana Lamont, daughter of Laird Malcolm Lamont, sets her life on the path of taking care of not only her father, people in their village but also all those victims of Laird Reginald Rothwick's cruelty. Reginald he has been systematically usurping and looting the Highland Villages. Alana is afraid that pretty soon their Highland will be attacked too. But she finds hope in The Dark Angel - one who stood against Laird Reginald. However who is this Dark Angel? Where can she find him? What is the fate of their village?

Although not involving magic, there is definite paranormal element weaved with romance in this plot. And I do agree that the characters are strong and so is the story theme. It is also in the similar lines to historical romances that she writes. Although I missed the actual existence of moon in the plot other than just a few lines about seeing blood on the moon. It would have been perfect if that was more expanded considering the theme of the novellas.

An easy read for those lonely nights or busy days, does not disappoint the reader and delivers everything it is expected to.

West of the Moon

Stars: 2 / 5
Recommendation: Not as impressed as the other three novellas as well as the novella of hers that I read a long time ago. Easy read though.

West of the Moon is the fourth and final novella in the October 2004 anthology Moon Shadows written by Marianne Wilman. The novella is a collaboration between four authors - Nora Roberts, Jill Gregory, Ruth Ryan Langan and Marianne Willman - with tales filled with moon, magic and love.

Phoebe Sutton comes to Thorne Court to be the housekeeper for Lord Thornwood. However she ends up finding Gordon Tremaine, Lord Thornwood's nephew, once her betrothed. And the one who had backed out of it. Why had he betrayed her? How can she be in the same house alongside with him? In the meanwhile she finds something amiss with Thorne Court itself. What is it? What is happening?

Marianne adds a hell lot of magic and romance to her plot but totally misses out on the moon just like Ruth Ryan Langan's Blood on the Moon plot. The central plot has a Beauty and Beast theme to it. Her characters are very strong though the plot is weak.

However, for some reason, I was getting a lot distracted while reading and missing out lines altogether. Not sure if I wasn’t in the mood or if the writing flair wasn’t good enough to keep me gripped.

I had read one of her other novella titled Dragon Spell, which was part of the Once Upon A Castle anthology (Review of all four books in the novella here: http://inspirethoughts.livejournal.co...) that she had written along with the same set of authors as this current novella. I had liked that plot of Marianne very much. However this time around it backfired.

Contrarily this time around I had appreciated Ruth Ryan Langan's novella Blood on the Moon in this book as opposed to Falcon's Lair in Once Upon a Castle anthology. Then I hadn't really liked her book.

Oh well, not every book written by an author would always be liked by the readers. So this comes under that category for me. Will I pick up future Marianne Willman's or Ruth Ryan Langan's books? Perhaps if they come as part of the novellas, but not really as a stand-alone books.

Spoiler Alerts:

1) Grammatical / Geographical / Location / Character / Historical Errors:
a. On Pg. 287, line 1, it should be "…power granted to him."

An anthology of romantic stories centered around the lore and lure of the full moon by three well-known romance authors.

Suspend your disbelief and embrace these three great fantasy romances. All three stories are interesting, but Roberts's stands out above the others.

Favourite story - West of the Moon by Marianne Willman. It was the shortest and the most interesting.
The rest of the stories feature insta-love which I'm not a fan of.

CHALLENGE # 24-TWO FEMALE AUTHORS

Breakdown-
1-Wolf Moon:Nora Roberts
A werewolf meets her soulmate while searching for a cure.
fast paced story. characters have great chemistry & you root for her to find a cure.

2-The Moon Witch:Jill Gregory
a good with enlists the aid of a knight to save her sister from an evil witch.
again, good chemistry b/w the characters. good story.

3-Blood on the Moon: Ruth Ryan Langan
Highlanders band together to fight an invading army
was a good story until the end b/c it was a little lame but it was ghosts so whatever...
cute kids in the story. great characters.

4-West of the Moon:Mariann Willman
a man with a faerie curse tries to hide from his true love
i didn't care for this story. i found it a bit dull & stupid.

This was an anthology containing 4 books. The moon was a central point in all of them. There was one about being trapped by fairies in their kingdom and the price to get out. One was about a witch's sister that had all of her beauty, kindness, everything that made her who she was sucked out of her and a barely living shell left. Her sister goes to confront the evil witch and restore her sister. The last one a young boy sees his whole family murdered and he is stabbed in the chest and left for dead. The evil duke is coming to attack the last keep and they are all women and children. He survived to bring the evil to an end. All the stories were awesome.

A couple of the stories I liked and a couple I didn't.

I thought the standout was Nora Roberts vampire story, which was excellent and totally unlike anything else of hers that I have ever read.

The stories practically all verged on (or crossed into) Harlequin territory, which is not a genre I like so that accounts for the low star count. For people who like that genre, this would be an excellent choice.

Some I liked better than others

Fairy tales for grown ups! The last story was pretty evident right from the start on how to break the spell. Still they made for good quick reads though I thought some stories were more well thought out than others.

Just reading Wolf Moon for my Nora Roberts Reading Challenge. I have read everything published since 2004 (except for the books that haven't been released yet).

I have to say I like how Nora Roberts seems to write these male characters who just worm their way into the woman's life. Simone wants to keep her distance since she's been turned into a werewolf but Gabe just nudges his way into her life. Together they end up working on a way to cure Simone of being a werewolf.

Personally it's the first time I've read this concept of trying to cure the werewolf. I've seen it done in TV shows and it never really goes far, but I like the way Nora worked with the concept. Simone had been working on it but she just needed Gabe. A fresh set of eyes, a medical background, and a personal connection to make it all that more important to succeed.

I actually liked all four stories in this collection. And the first one, by Nora Roberts, Wolf Moon actually verges more on horror than romance. There is a romance in the tale (otherwise why would Nora write it), but it is centered around the horror of becoming and being a werewolf. Nice.

Jill Gregory's The Moon Witch and Marianne Willman's West of the Moon were both nice stories as well. My favorite in the foursome was Ruth Ryan Langan's Blood on the Moon, a strong woman, a mysterious man -- a little uncertainity in the future. And well written to boot. Nice.

First story (Nora Roberts) was good - the werewolf line is a different one for NR, and it held together well. Of course, Simone is a quintessential NR heroine - over-achieving, driven, multi-talented, and strong, but I guess if you're a werewolf, those aren't necessarily bad traits. Three stars for this one.

The other three rate 1 star each - I thought they were just plain silly.
