A fine collection of primary texts for the study of the context of early Christianity. Although now a bit dated, and certainly limited (as are all readers), Barrett's revised volume is still quite useful. Among the highlights are the chapters on Papyri and Inscriptions, as well as the texts from the popular philosophers of the period. Any serious student of the New Testament and/or Christian Origins will want to make themselves familiar with these texts.
My first introduction to the concept that the New Testament, well, happened. You know - in a particular place and time? Devastating insight of 1974, still helps me along today.
Finished the first edition. The selections were well-chosen and interesting. The notes were ok, but could have been much more helpful. The translations are a bit outdated and not easy to read through quickly.
