Dallis is a nineteen year old senior in high school, and Colbie is his twenty-five year old history teacher. The age gap, while exciting and brings a different component to the book by being a reverse age gap, isn’t too significant.
When we’re first introduced to Colbie and Dallis, he’s admiring her as she teaches. From there, I already knew that this young man was going to have it bad for Colbie, and I was ready for it. The way he describes and depicts her is genuine and sweet, and it’s no surprise when we discover that he’s been attracted to her for over two months.
He makes the first move, and naturally, Colbie is skeptical about it. First because of his age, which is put to rest, but also because she’s his teacher. She has this internal struggle and back and forth with her subconscious, even reaching out to a character from another book I’ve read by the author. Which I enjoyed getting to see. Dallis wears her down with promises to take her places where the chances of them being seen together are slim to none, and on their first date, he takes her two hours away to keep his promise.
Dallis is so protective of Colbie to a fault. He isn’t letting anyone come for her without consequences, and we get to see the way he protects and stands up for her several times.
I enjoyed reading about the support their relationship got from his family. The people around him are in similar relationships, and for me, that helped solidify that he wasn’t looking for something short term. He's grown up around the same type of love he was pursuing, and I think seeing that helped show Colbie that he was in it for the long haul and gave her peace of mind that they would have support.
Colbie was such a great character to read. I felt her struggle, the back and forth with whether or not she should give Dallis a chance because she had so much that she could lose, and I felt for her. It’s a hard decision to make, and though she agrees to go out with him the first time, we can see that she’s still a bit skeptical. She still has some doubts and reservations.
I think one of my favorite things about the book was how Colbie didn’t compromise being his teacher while being his girlfriend. Without giving too much away, there is a part where she gives him zeros for several assignments. He gets no special treatment or favoritism, and that says a lot about her integrity and the respect she has for what she does.
She's also very patient because there were two people in the book that I would have had words with long before she did. She tried to be diplomatic, and I would have come out hurting feelings because leave her alone and let her live her life. If it doesn’t concern or hurt you, let her live.
The chemistry she and Dallis have was interesting to read. We got to see the way it transitioned from essentially puppy love to something deeper, and for the most part, unless I was reading something that had to do with the classroom, I often forgot that he was younger than she was. He was very mature, and the author did a great job at capturing that while also not making him seem more mature than Colbie.
The crossovers that we got in this book were so nice, and I always enjoy it when authors tie their works together. There’s more I could say, but then I’d be entering deep spoiler territory.
If you’re interested in reading a reverse age gap with great chemistry, maturity, compromise, an easy to follow storyline, and more. I highly recommend this book.
