Printmaking + Mixed Media: Simple Techniques and Projects for Paper and Fabric

Rate this book
Reinterpreting traditional methods, this resource presents creative, affordable, and accessible techniques for mixed-media artists and printmakers of all experience levels looking to incorporate printed images onto paper or fabric. From screen printing to collagraphy to sun printing, the techniques are shown with step-by-step photographs and can be done without printing presses or special papers. A variety of projects are included to demonstrate a wide range of possible creations, such as fabric-arts books, hand-printed calendars, wall-art collages, aprons, holiday books, greeting cards, and more. For further inspiration beyond the projects, a gallery of completed works by the author and other artists make up the final portion of this resource.

I don't know why I keep getting books like this. I don't have money to waste on art supplies, and even if I had the money I don't have the space to keep them, and certainly not the clear space to engage in print-making.

And if I did have the space... Well, I look at the examples of what you can make in these books' suggested projects and usually think, "That is way too much effort to make this meh piece of art."

So, yeah. I didn't try any of these, or really even want to. But the explanations seemed pretty clear and book is layed out well. If you want to find the easiest sort of print-making to try at home or just want to understand what the different techniques are, this is a good intro.

p.s. If you have an old thermal imaging printer apparently those go for the big bucks now!

3.5 stars. Good overview of all sorts of different types of printmaking, from monoprinting to screen printing and more. Definitely found some things I'm going to try out in my art journaling. This is one I'll be picking up used for reference.

An introductory printmaking book; the illustrations and examples were lovely, but overall, a pretty elementary book. Coming from someone who knows very little about printmaking though, I found the screen printing particularly informative. Many of the projects provided were home crafts, which disappointed me, but the section on cyanotypes and books was great, particularly the imagery provided. Read it if you're new to printmaking and a step by step instruction is needed.

You can learn interesting techniques of manual print-making, and she shows how to combine this with mixed media. I can't say I liked most of the actual artwork examples, but the techniques are educational.

Decent overview of some basic and fairly accessible printmaking techniques that don’t require a ton of expensive equipment or highly toxic products.

Some interesting project ideas and interesting art throughout the book illustrating various the techniques.

Very minimal information on gelatin (aka gelli) printing but a good amount of info on screen printing and collagraph printing (which I don’t recall coming across before).

I love printmaking and I haven’t indulged in it for some time.
This is one of the best, inspiring and user friendly books on the topic that I have come across so far. Great explanations and instructions that beginners can manage too, with interesting examples. A wonderful resource.

It’s a very informative look at printmaking. While the title claims to be a book about simple techniques for printmaking, I’d argue a beginner would need a lot more information for success.
