The nucleus of a complete human cell contains 48 particles called chromosomes. But the nucleus of the ovum contains only 24 chromosomes, and the same is true of the sperm. Only when the ovum and the sperm combine do we get the full number of 48. When this happen, the ovum is said to be fertilized.
