All Tara Daston wanted was a fun night out dancing with her boyfriend. Getting killed was certainly the last thing she ever expected and waking back up three days later as a vampire was the last thing she ever wanted. And just when she finally begins adjusting to her new life, a friend is killed by a creature nobody can identify. At first, she tries to move on because, after all, she's just a newly risen vampire who was still trying to learn about existing as the undead. But despite it all, she can't stop thinking about her friend. As more killings happen, she realizes that she can't ignore it any longer. Deciding to investigate a little, she meets Tom Duncan, the lead agent of the Preternatural Investigation Agency, who is not amused at her interference. Whether it's because they are both vampires or because he keeps treating her as if she's five years old, but Tara really enjoys riling the agent. Also, now that she's gotten involved, she doesn't want to stop. And when the killer notices her and is intrigued, she no longer has any choice, forcing her to work together with Tom and the rest of the agency to stop the murders.
Hi, I am an author and mom to one very energetic horse and three slightly demonic, yet cute, cats. So far, I have published four books (available on Amazon) and am working on my fifth. My first book Midnight Reflections is a mystery thriller involving vampires, werewolves, warlocks and a serial killer. Basically, the story starts with an young woman struggling to deal with being turned into a vampires. Shortly after she begins adapting to her new unlife, a friend of hers is killed and she becomes involved in the investigation into finding the killer and begin working with the Preternatural Investigation Agency, which is run by an ex-cop turned vampire named Tom Duncan. In a world where vampires and werewolves are common and accepted, sometimes it is hard to find the actual monsters. My other books continue the sage of the Preternatural Investigation Agency.
In Katrina Michaels’ “Midnight Reflections,” Vampires have been acknowledged by mankind and a somewhat uneasy combining of the species has occurred as the vampires assimilate into society. Vampires abide (for the most part) by the mortal’s laws, and they have, between themselves, propped up leaders of their own. But of course, everything is not all rosy in the world.
Our protagonist, Tara, goes out with boyfriend (mortal) Michael to a known vampire bar and has a blast, but Michael sulks the whole time and watches her from across the room. He doesn’t care about her—he only wants to remain in her good graces in the hopes she’ll put in a good word for him with her uncle for a job he covets. When the evening is over, and he leads her to his car from the nightclub, they get into an argument and Tara winds up mortally wounded. A desperate decision must be made: She must be turned into a vampire or be left to die.
And that’s just the first few pages!
Author Michaels keeps the pace going throughout this intriguing vampire tale, where the reader gets to “slip into Tara’s skin” and experience becoming a vampire. How to behave, what to expect, learn the rules of vampires and werewolves (yes, there are werewolves, too!)—and learn how to relate to your sire—the one who turned you. I enjoyed the relationship between Tara and her sire, Alexander; I found it very believable. The plot thickens when Tara takes on an investigatory role to help her friends and let me warn you—the ending is action-packed and surprising. Michaels can write fight scenes, people. I was sucked in deeply!
The point of view is loose in this book so the reader will see into the minds of many characters at once. The writing style is smooth and easy to read.
Who is this book for? Anyone who enjoys vampire novels will enjoy this one. Take a walk in Tara’s shoes and see where she leads you. I think you’ll have a good time.
That was an amazing story, a very skillfully written detective story with paranormal elements in it. It hooked me up from the very first pages and kept intrigued and in suspense up to the very end. The manner of unwinding the investigation was close to that of The Silence of the Lambs when you could never guess who the murderer was until it was too late. And that was really fascinating.
This is definitely a page-turner and no doubt a good one.
Katrina Michaels novel Midnight Reflections is an interesting look into a world where vampires and the supernatural coexist with what humans would call the normal world. Katrina shows us the life of Tara Daston who was killed and brought back to life in the dark world of the vampires. You follow her as she struggles to comes to terms with her new found life, and is unwillingly thrust into the middle of a serial killers nightmare. Determined to survive and find out who is leaving bits and pieces of the victims for Tara to find. She joins up with the preternatural police and the hunt begins. But is it Tara that is the hunted. This novel is a good read for anyone who loves a good thriller or needs the supernatural edge to get by. Shawn weaver - Author Sense of Honor
Author Katrina Michaels has a refreshing twist on the traditional vampire mythos. Out in the open, the supernaturals mingle with society. They of course must follow some rules to keep everything happy. She maintains the “can’t go inside unless invited” rule, and Vampires are still relegated to the night, as usual; but, the fact that things are in a bit of harmony is a nice thing. That is due to The Preternatural Agency.
The story opens with Tara having a fun night out at the club with her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend. Upon leaving, she dumps him and he takes it pretty badly. He attacks her and bludgeons her to death. Thankfully, the club they were at was one that caters to the undead. He takes her inside and convinces a vampire to turn her, so he can escape being blamed for her death.
Though she didn’t want to be turned, she takes it in stride. I have to say I love Tara. She’s a character you can really enjoy. Upon awaking as a vampire she finds she’s now child to a 300 year old Vampire, Alexander, who wants to be a father again. He misses the companionship and ability to pass on his knowledge. He’s actually very caring, for a vamp, and helps to bring Tara up to speed and teach her how to take care of herself. Which is something she will need to take on the true villain of this story.
Tara’s ex ends up dead and the mystery surrounding his as well as other deaths leads Tara to The Preternatural Agency and agent Tom who seems to get in her way, or is it the other way around? I’d rather not give too much away, suffice to say this was a fun read, a nice blend of Urban Fantasy and Mystery. I am looking forward to more from this author!
Now, I must admit this is my first vampire book and I was a little hesitant to begin, thinking it would be full of cliches and unlikeable characters. I couldn't have been more wrong! Michaels has created an alternate world, inhabited by vampires, werewolves, warlocks, and all kinds of other magic-users. The story begins with a murder and the action does not let up until the very end. I found myself trying to figure out the identity of the killer throughout the entire story and I was still surprised at the end! Michaels pulled off a perfect twist that is so integral to the mystery genre.
The characters are quirky, endearing, and made me laugh out loud at times. The book follows the main character, Tara, as she is (involuntarily) changed into a vampire and gets wrapped up in a serial killer case. The growth of her character throughout the story is fantastic. If you are a fan of the mystery or vampire genre (or even if you're not!), I would definitely recommend this book.
I come to know the book via facebook. It’s the first book of Katrina. It start’s very harmless like Sookie Stackhouse. But then very fast the speed of the story rise up and some bloody scene are there. Well, the story is very good and nice to read but because of the bloody and horror scene nothing for people with weak nerves. Sometimes it’s little bit lengthy and some phrases are repeat very often (he or she said softly). The language could be improve a little bit. The charactere of the book you can good imagine and are sympathic. Max is a very nice person, I think. The polite and gently vampire Alexander, who changed Tara, is very good, too. You can follow the author very well and the story is a good thriller. You don’t know the murder since the last sites of the book.
So all in all the book was very good for the first one of the author even though it have some weakness and space to improve.
Midnight Reflections is an engaging read for those who enjoy paranormal mysteries. Katrina Michaels creates a world where supernatural creatures and humans live side by side in an uneasy co-existence. The heroine, Tara becomes a vampire and is caught up in the search for a serial killer, but this killer is supernatural and a creature never seen before. The author takes you on a fast-paced ride with the Preternatural Investigation Agency as they track down the killer. Michaels also offers some new viewpoints on the vampire and Tara's struggle to accept her new existence
