On one level this is a novel about the land, set in a region long commemorated for its sublime wilderness rather than for its industrial history. On another it attempts to observe the England of the 1980s, a nation preoccupied as much with shopping as with work.

dragged at times but mostly interesting, paticularly on the state of British politics in the late 80s and how it can be seen that things have just gotten worse since. Author enjoyed showing off his vocab, some smart people conversing here. main character was of intriguing, very passive and always listening and thinking, rarely in control, the other characters were always making big choices and decisions or being impulsive. I appreciated the contrast. All the main chap ever seemed to manage was going on long, angst filled walks on his own.
