We the People: A Call to Take Back America

Rate this book
America faces its greatest threat since the Civil War. The worst fears of the Founders are being realized, as powerful corporate interests have taken over our culture and representative government. Thom Hartman is a very liberal (or Progressive) radio host out of Seattle. He's quite intelligent, albeit a bit paranoid and conspiratorial about things.I have previously read his book Screwed: The War Against the Middle Class and loved it. This book is his distilled thinking about the influence of corporations on our democracy, as well as his opinions about what is ruining our nation. He makes some excellent points, although I'd like to know if his thinking about the national debt (a catastrophe under President Bush, according to the author) is different under President Obama, who has tripled the debt with no end in sight.

This book is a graphic novel (or non-novel, I guess), which makes it a quick read, and a bit of a precursor to Howard Zinn's A People's History of the American Empire. If you are interested in what a smart, far-Left guy thinks about what is ailing America (corporate personhood...and I couldn't agree more with that point), this is the book for you.

Giving it half a star for absurdity isn't possible, so one star it is. This reads like a bible/playbook for AOC and the ilk. News flash: all political parties are influenced by corporations. All parties use media propaganda to their full advantage. Term limits would fix that.

*interesting note: some of the policies proposed became Trump policies.

Though the content is valuable, as a graphic novel this is not really a good one.

Not only does Thom Hartmann have a gift for erudite yet digestible prose, he had the genius to put it into a comic book format and to put the weight of his ideas and background into encouraging positive change.

You may think you know what's wrong with our country, but this book will make not only the problems crystal clear, but the solutions as well.

If you need a really concise primer of what's going wrong with politics, here's a book to pick up. Its only major flaw is its dated nature as it was published in 2004 and has an incessant drumbeat against the bogeyman of the then-current Bush Administration more than the problematic system as a whole.

Oh, HELL yes. The last few years have shown just how pernicious the effects of the so-called "corporate citizen" have become. This book shows you how to fight back against corporate influence in society and government.

A cartoon history of the U.S. Constitution, targeted for middle school kids and even less academic high school kids--but with worthwhile content.

Can't decide between and 4 and a 5 star review. I would also be interested in reading an updated edition.
