The Two Bells of Christmas

Rate this book
Christmas is the perfect time to fall in love—unless you’re pretending to be your twin sister.

Cassandra Bell is happy to stay in the shadow of her poised and proper twin sister. After all, her only goal for the Hastings’ Christmas house party is to not make a complete fool of herself. Vivian, however, has much higher aspirations—her heart is set on a proposal from the eligible Mr. Hastings himself. But when Vivian grows ill, she begs Cassie to switch places with her and keep the other conniving ladies away from Mr. Hastings. Cassie reluctantly takes on the role of her twin, certain the charade will end in disaster.

Anticipating a quiet Christmas in the country, Roland Hastings arrives home to learn his matchmaking mother has organized an entire house party to help him find a bride. The last thing Roland wants is to spend the Yuletide season fending off simpering ladies—that is, until he meets Miss Bell. Spunky and unconventional and refreshingly honest, Miss Bell sweeps into Roland’s heart like a whirlwind. A whirlwind he has no desire to escape.

Mr. Hastings is nothing like Cassie expected, and the closer she grows to her handsome host, the harder it becomes to hide her true self—and her true feelings. But falling in love was never part of the plan, especially since Roland believes she is someone else. With Vivian quickly recovering and the house party coming to a close, Cassie is torn between loyalty to her sister and the unexpected yearnings of her heart . . .

The Two Bells of Christmas is a sweet Regency romance novella that was previously published in the Timeless Regency Collection, A Christmas Promise. This edition has a bonus epilogue and new edits.

Do you like Christmas Novella?

I loved every minute spent in this story. The pacing is perfect. Beautifully written. The plot is so engaging that I could not put this book down. The characters are lovely. They are unique, endearing, and very, very memorable. I felt immediately immersed in the story & connected with the characters from page one. This story had me chuckling often because of Cassandra's awkward moments, pretending to be her twin sister which creates many hilarious scenes that will have you giggling and falling in love with the characters... the main characters had such great chemistry! This is a Christmas novella perfection.

This story is so sweet, clean Regency romance that mothers and their teenage daughters can enjoy. I highly recommend easy five stars.

4 stars ✨ Clean Fiction - Regency - Christmas

I was a little giddy starting this novella for some reason? Perhaps it was the beautiful cover or even the plot of twins switching places, but I was maybe just a little too excited for this story!

With books that have the plot of deceiving others about one’s identity, I’m always bracing for the reveal because the deceivee usually reacts badly and its a hurried ending to make up and live happily ever after. I’m happy to say that I was quite satisfied with this reveal and ending which tells you we have not a case of the frustration listed above. 👏🏻

The main two kisses was a bit much for my tastes and makes me hesitate giving it this higher rating, so I’m very torn on that. I absolutely adored the epilogue though and it made the book for me.

(Age suggestion: Because of the kisses lasting a while, I would suggest 16-18+ depending on the girl, personally. If the girl has read other romance books or ones by this author and those were okay, this would probably be okay as well, however, it's not one I would personally recommend without knowing the reader or her tastes.)

Main Content-
Roland wants to get married, but “wasn’t certain the Fates agreed with him” about it; A hymn about the first Christmas is sung (Whilst Shepherds Watched heir Flocks by Night); A couple mentions of bad luck; A mention of praying.

No major language is said, but more minor words like ‘blast’, ‘drat’, ‘for heaven’s sake’, ‘Heavens’, ‘thunder and turf’ are said and exclaimed.

Cassie’s twin sister begs her to pose as her until she’s better and while Cassie does it, she’s uncomfortable with lying and deceiving the other guests—mainly Roland.

Mentions of illnesses & throwing up (barely-above-not-detailed); Mentions of lies, lying, & deceit; A few mentions of deaths & grief (Roland’s father); A few mentions of wine at dinners; A few mentions of gossip & rumors; A couple mentions of wars/battles; A couple mentions of a possible accident & death; A mention of a grandfather having a glass of whiskey.

3 hand/wrist kisses,
3 kisses lasting a couple sentences (one being on the jaw),
2 kisses lasting a few sentences,
2 kisses lasting two paragraphs in length each (around 10+ kisses);
Remembering kisses (up to a few sentences);
Wanting to touch, embrace, & kiss (up to a couple sentences); Touches, Embraces, Hand holding, Shivers/Tingles, Flutters, Warmth, Nearness, & Smelling (up to a few sentences); Winks; Noticing (up to a few sentences).

Mentions of kisses & kissing; Mentions of reputations; A few mentions of flirting; A few mentions of making sure the opposite gender doesn’t see anything scandalous in other’s trunk; A mention of forced marriages after a couple is caught alone together.

I first read this novella when it was released as part of a Christmas anthology a few years ago and I loved it just as much reading it a second time! I love the switched/mistaken identities trope because it is so rich with possibilities!

This may be a quick, easy read to finish in one sitting (I certainly did!), but it is full of so many heartwarming moments and swoony scenes (the alcove! the ballroom! the roof!) and the holiday setting was the perfect backdrop.

You definitely want to make time this holiday season to pick up this adorable romance!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

I love identity swaps! Will they get caught? How much mayhem will they cause? It's just good fun! The romance was sweet and I loved the little moments between them.

Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only)

Cassandra Bell has been tasked with accompanying her twin sister Vivian to a Christmas house party in an attempt to secure a proposal for Vivian with the handsome Roland Hastings. Unfortunately, when Vivian falls ill upon arrival, she persuades Cassie to pretend to be her until she is able to join the party a few days later. Although Cassie is not as ladylike as her sister, she agrees to help keep Roland from falling for another eligible lady. The only problem is that Roland is charmed by Cassie's free spirit, and Cassie is swept away by his romantic gestures and kind heart. What will happen when Cassie must step aside and let Vivian win the man that she has fallen for?

This was a quick holiday read that left me smiling! It's hard to convince readers that two characters have fallen in love in less than 150 pages, but Joanna Barker did just that. I thought the twin swap played out nicely and made sense with the circumstances, even if it was resolved a bit easily in the end. Roland and Cassie were both lovable characters and had several sweet moments together that showed their growing attraction for one another. They were both reluctant to find love, and it was fitting that they found happiness together. I liked how they both got to make romantic gestures and how they had some quiet moments together to get to know one another. It just felt like a natural progression of falling in love in a short period of time. I'm so glad I picked up this delightful read from Joanna Barker and highly recommend it if you want something short and sweet!

Cute, super clean, historical romance novella that takes place during the Christmas holiday. This is a very safe read (their lips barely touch kinda clean). I think it is a great option for readers of romance who want nothing to do with hanky-panky times. Obviously I consider hanky-panky times a prerequisite, but alas I can appreciate that people tastes vary.

description

Anyway, this was well-written and I found myself laughing through all the awkward run-ins the heroine has in the beginning of the story. I have only one point of critique - identical twins are not hereditary.... fraternal twins are (you'll know what I'm talking about, if you choose to read this).

Joanna Barker’s books never let me down. Even her novellas are some of my favorites because she can captivate an audience beautifully with whatever romance she is writing. I AM HERE FOR IT ALWAYS.

I loved both of these characters. Roland and Cassie were the sweetest. There was plenty of interaction between them, lots of soft moments, and kisses in the snow. YAY.

The plot was handled amazingly too. I loved how the twin switch worked out between Cassie and her sister. I love when siblings love and take care of each other and this was no exception. Especially when the go get the girl line comes up? Done. I am a puddle of swoon.

All in all, perfect for the season. You’ll love these characters and this story and I hope it gives all the warm fuzzies it gave me.

Overall audience notes:
- Regency Holiday Novella
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: none

(Reread Dec 2023) Loved this one just as much the second time. Roland makes me swoon!

(Nov 2022) I absolutely loved this sweet Christmas novella!

Identical twin sisters, Cassie and Vivian, may look just alike, but that’s where the similarities end. While Vivian is a proper lady, Cassie often gets in trouble for speaking her mind. The sisters are invited to a house party with the hopes of Vivian catching the eye of the handsome Mr. Hastings. When Vivian becomes ill and must remain in her room for days, the sisters come up with a sneaky plan to keep Mr. Hastings attention on Vivian and not the other single ladies at the party.

This was perfectly short and sweet with just enough angst and emotion to make it feel like a full length novel. Cassie has a down to earth personality and it’s easy to love her. I loved how neither she or Roland wanted to be at the house party and how it brought them together.

Joanna wrote a brand new epilogue in for this novella and it was just the sweetest! As a twin mom myself, it was extra sweet for me!

Cassandra Bell takes the place of her older (and more eligible?) sister Vivian at Roland Hastings's holiday house party. They fall into lurve, marred only by the hero calling Cassie by the wrong name following their first kiss. OOPS.

1. A froth!

2. A bit more about Cassie as a woman would have been appreciated. There are a few asides about how no man had paid her attention before, and how she was happier at home with her Grandfather. It's not clear what she wants out of life, so her falling into feelings with Roland never really meant anything.

3. Ditto Roland.

4. His mom sounds like a PITA tho.

Twin sisters switching places, mistaken identity, endearing characters, witty humor, a Christmas house party, and plenty of swoony romance make this a must read!

There’s something about identical twins switching places that’s so much fun. In this case, Cassie switches places with her sister Vivian when they arrive at a Christmas house party and Vivian is ill. Not just a temporary sickness, but one that lasts several days. Vivian is hoping to turn her meeting last season with Roland Hastings into something more when she’s invited to a house party by his mother. Not wanting to let the other women have an advantage, she begs Cassie to pose as her until she’s well enough to resume her identity.

Cassie is so darling. She’s funny, forthright, and willing to speak her mind. She’s the opposite of all the society debutants Roland’s encountered and that’s what makes her so adorable. The more time he spends with her, the more he likes her and wants to get to know her better. She’s thoughtful, sweet, and has a dry sense of humor he loves. But what happens when her sister is well again? Will she be able to let go of the man she’s fallen in love with for her sister’s sake? Will Ronald ever learn her true identity?

This novella was so hard to put down and even though it’s shorter in length, there’s so much packed into it. I loved the alcove scene after a disastrous performance, the archery in the ballroom, the roof scene, and the parrot! So many great romantic moments. This is definitely one you’ll want to have and reread. I loved the epilogue as well. Definitely a must read for Regency romance readers! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

I first read this in the Timeless Romance Anthology and remembered loving it. After reading it again, I can confirm this book is worth the read and reread!

This novella is perfect for a Christmas ‘pick-up and quickly finish’ kind of read while being busy with the holiday rush!

I love the premise for this story. The meet-cute, mistake identity, slip-ups are all adorable! I especially loved the all-new epilogue and enjoyed getting a look at these characters a few years after this story took place.

Five stars, and worth the re-read. The cover is also so festive and fun!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I originally read this novella when it was a part of the Timeless Romance Anthology A Christmas Promise and at the time these were my thoughts: This cute little novella may be my favorite of Barker's novellas so far. I loved the premise of the sisters being identical twins and switching places. Roland was ADORABLE! I loved Cassie so much and everything that made her who she was. Their romance was so cute and had a good mix of humorous moments as well as swoony moments. Barker is a master at writing witty and engaging dialogue which continues to shine in this story. Her characters and descriptions are so well done, the story just came alive for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Picking it up again and rereading it now, I think I love it even more. Along with absolutely LOVING the new epilogue, it just reminded me why this still stands as my fave novella of Joanna's. It is so well-written and delivers all the feels so much so that I easily remembered and recalled favorite scenes and feelings from the book. I recommend it now even more than I did then. An absolute winner, don't miss this ten star Regency romance!

Two Bells of Christmas is just magic. Thank you @authorjoannabarker for letting me be a part of this release!

Here’s what I loved about this novella:
• the twin switch
• a wintery house party
• swoony kisses
• archery mishaps

While this this an novella, no part of it felt rushed or undeveloped. It was perfect and the romance felt so natural and beautiful. Cassie and Roland are meant to be and I will gladly reread their story every Christmas!

The first Joanna Barker that I gave two stars? Say it ain't so.

I felt like because it was so short, it didn't feel... well established. The romance felt too, too fast. Which, again, was the point of this small novella was to BE fast, but maybe it was not enough happening for a romantic connection to feel earned.

I’ve been taking the month on as more of a mood reader than an ARC reader and it’s been fun. When this novella ARC came up with Joanna Barker I thought I’d take a chance, even though I wasn’t sure I was in the mood for a novella.

The thing is, I’ve come to decide that Joanna Barker can make any length story compelling. This did not feel surface level novella. It don’t even feel that short, because so much was packed in at a pace that felt un-rushed.

This sweet regency Christmas novella wasn’t very full of Christmas traditions, but took place around Christmas time. Both main characters had a lot of growth, spent time making a meaningful connection, and the ending was so perfect. Loved the ballroom scene, the late nights, and that nursery window ledge scene. I also love when conflict ends without too much drama. I guess the only thing I wish was different, was that I could spend a little more time with these characters, however that’s generally a sign of a good book. This book also included archery, which is now becoming a regency theme I can get behind.

Joanna...just stop it with these delightful stories. How dare you make me smile from cover to cover!

The Two Bells of Christmas is a story of switched identities, sweet romance, and a fun little house party around Christmas time. Cassie gets pushed to play the role of her twin sister Vivian in order to keep the gentlemen of the house, Mr. Roland Hastings, from getting attention from other eligible young ladies. Cassie fails miserably at playing her sister, and finds Roland and herself drawn to each other despite the deception.

I love all of Cassie's quirks, sly remarks, and overall warm heart. I find her personality refreshing and unique, and I find her entirely relatable. I would probably act like her if I was a lady in regency era.

Roland is so charming and sweet, and I love how he dotes on her. It's a little insta-love but it's Christmas and anything is possible! Their romance is magic. Enough said.

Great kisses, Fun banter, and a lovely ending which wrapped up this Novella perfectly. Keep them coming Joanna! I will read anything you write. No questions asked.

This book (among others) had me thoroughly convinced that holiday novellas are the way to go! So much Christmas cheer and adorableness in a bite-sized package.

I’m a sucker for any story where the “weird girl” figures out that she’s amazing just the way she is. Cassie was so relatable and I found her so hilarious! It was so sad that she felt like an embarrassment next to her sister, but enter Roland 😏 My man gained so many points for looking past Cassie’s pretenses to fall in love with who she is, clumsy moments and all.

If you haven’t yet, here’s your sign to jump on the Joanna Barker train and add this bundle of joy to your Christmas TBR!

This is a truly delightful novella. It’s short, but sweet and definitely feel-good. The writing is excellent, the romance well developed (especially considering the length of the book), and there is very little angst or frustrating misunderstandings. Just a charming story of swapped identities and a thwarted matchmaking mother.

Highly recommended to those looking for a short and sweet regency romance.

Content:
There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to a couple mildly descriptive kisses. There is no mention of faith or God.

I very much enjoyed this holiday, Regency romance. The witty dialogue and banter between the characters kept me engaged and entertained.

Roland was a most eligible bachelor, who just so happened to have a mother who appointed herself to be his matchmaker. In her matchmaking role, she was quite meddlesome.

A set of identical twin sisters were invited to a house party as potential bachelorettes. To solve a problem, the twins decided to switch identities…and this is where the fun and romance begins.

I loved the relationship between the twins. They weren’t just close sisters, they truly were best friends to each other.

The romance was sweet, fun and satisfying. This was a lovely holiday read.

Just read this sweet Christmas novella in a flash! Seriously, I almost read it in one sitting, but I fell asleep because I started it so late. So I finished it first thing this morning!

When @authorjoannabarker offered me a #gifted copy of this story, I was all, “where do I sign my name??” I’m a big fan of her Regency Romance novels! This novella was fun and a little Parent Trap-y, with a twin switcharoo! I did have some reservations about the trickery, bc you just know how it’s going to play out, but I still very much enjoyed it. It’s always nice to have something you can read quickly and enjoy! If you’re looking for something short, sweet and holidayish, definitely check this one out!
