Random Acts of Poetry - Act 3: The History behind the Mystery

Rate this book
This third anthology of poetry is sub-titled, “The History behind the Mystery” for the trivia section. This is the largest section containing 19 poems. “Capture the King” received a lot of feedback as well as “Dissected Maps,” “Japanese Crackers,” and “Rotten in Denmark.” Some trivia poems provide progressive clues leading up to a reveal at the end, while others bring out the history behind the origin and development of commonly used idioms or phrases.

With a total of 58 poems, the remaining selections are categorized into eight additional sections, including family, religion, movies, haiku, nature, mental illness, politics, and finally, an assortment section. Many poems were inspired by contest topics from an online poetry writers club on goodreads.com. By August 2022, I had accumulated about 40 poems and decided it was time to start arranging a third book. By the time of final editing, I added 18 more.

In this book, I take the reader on another ride of random poems of my creation. “To Sing” may interest you as well as “Prayin’ to Myself,” “Sonnet of the Fruit of the Spirit,” and “Summer Solstice Sonnet.” A third sonnet in this book is “My First Delusion,” the sole poem in the “Mental Illness” category. In the family section, there is a special poem “Remembering Jerry” for Jerry Waszkowski, father of my brother-in-law, Matt Waszkowski. Matt wrote the Foreword for this book. Also, "Tough as Shoe Leather" was a special request from my sister-in-law, Tina, for her father, Don Ross. It is written to be later turned into a song similar to Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Ton."

Additionally, I explore a couple of new poetry styles in this book. One is diamante. For example, “Seasonal” is what I refer to as a double diamante, or two diamante poems conjoined. Another diamante poem is “Star Wars Diamante.” An explanation of that form can be found at the footnote of the poem "Seasonal." "A New Day" is the other new poetic form called pantoum. It is a unique form of line repetition between neighboring quatrains. Although my poem had end rhyme, the form does not require it.

“Movies” is a new section relating to some of my favorites. “A Little Strange” pertains to my favorite Marvel Comics hero Dr. Strange. “The Boy Who Lived” of course is for Harry Potter. And “We Didn’t Start the Dark Side” is a poem about the original Star Wars trilogy. Those are some of the longest poems I have ever written.

Please be sure to get yourself a nice cup of your favorite beverage, a comfortable chair and if necessary, a cozy blanket. It also is helpful to read these aloud. I think you will find that it provides an added dimension to the experience.

My other two books are still available exclusively on amazon.com.

About the author

Brett Starr

Brett is a mechanical engineer from Northwest Indiana. He was born and raised in Plymouth, IN. Starr has co-authored five U.S patents, and currently resides in Michigan City, IN. Also, Brett writes poems in his spare time and has self-published six books of poetry. In June of 2025, Starr co-authored his mental health memoir, The Bipolar Clock, with former engineering boss, Brian Dennis.

Brett's hobby of writing poetry is his creative outlet, or what he considers a healthy addiction. In 2018, Starr began to consider writing a book about his experiences with bipolar disorder. It was during this process that he had his "eureka moment" and he discovered "The Bipolar Clock." Basically, he went through several stages in his life on his way to recovery. They all seemed to start with the letter "D." The first draft was written in 2021 and revised in 2022 by co-author, Brian Dennis. After pitching the book idea to several literary agents, there were no takers. So, they decided to self-publish. To compliment his poetry books, Starr has added this non-fiction mental health memoir. He and Brian feel this book will be helpful to bipolar sufferers and their families.

Also, Brett has written over 300 poems thus far in his Anthology of poetry books. These random thoughts were inspired by various influences such as the following: stories, songs, movies, nature, music, science, history, sacred geometry, and space. The collection covers a wide variety of subjects, including philosophy, humor, science and math, religion, politics, family, death, temptation, love/romance, haiku, music, trivia, and mental illness.

Brett has a deep appreciation for the poems of Robert Frost, like “Mending Wall,” “Fire and Ice,” and “The Road Not Taken.” But his favorite poem is "If-" by Rudyard Kipling.
