Enamored in Death

Rate this book
In the belly of the Underworld, Thanatos has reigned as the God of Death since time immemorial, disregarding his own fearsome reputation and the loneliness that comes with it.

When Nyx, the Goddess of Night, assigns him a partner for the first time, Thanatos is forced to accommodate the newcomer — the one thing that ancient gods don’t do well, is change.

Makaria is the newest goddess of the Underworld, plucked from her isolated life as a solitary priestess by Nyx herself. When she learns her new immortality is conditional, she realizes it’s more tenuous than she ever bargained for.

Meanwhile, Apollo holds an ancient grudge and plans his revenge meticulously. When he unleashes his wrath on the mortal realm, it may destroy all of Greece.

Thanatos and Makaria are forced to combine their forces to try and save the world, but both will have to put aside their differences and learn how to be a team in order to have a chance at surviving.

Molly Tullis’s “Enamored in Death”, the third in the Asphodel Series, takes a look at the ancient world of Greece with a new kind of myth — putting the spotlight back on the powerful women that the world hopes we would forget.

“Enamored in Death” is a mythological historical fiction set in the ancient world; it contains graphic violence, swearing, and sex scenes.

There was no immortal soul that could kiss both sides of Thanatos’s coin and discover that his bed was warm, not cold as ice as it was rumored.
There was no immortal soul…yet.
She was about to cheat Death himself, and in doing so, she would run right into his arms.

so makaria, as we meet her in the last book was one the last priestesses who worshipped nyx, in this book we see that when she dies nyx gives her an opportunity to become the goddess of blessed death the only catch is that she needs to work with the underworld’s official emo boy aka thanatos🌚

When they spoke, their own thoughts betrayed their hidden meanings right below the surface.
“You…you have to trust me.”
I think I love you.
“Okay.”
I think I love you, too.

AHHHHH😭😭😭

the angst and sexual tension between these two was soo good but at the same time they respected each other (even when they weren’t in love, which honestly i feel is very imp cause developing respect for a person after falling for them is not really respect)

moving on i loved the way thanatos was protective of makaria and almost cut apollo’s balls off for cornering her at the party👹👹👹
“If I were you, I’d leave this hall right now before I decide, for the first time in my immortal life, to fuck the Fates and take your shade to oblivion right now.”

persephone’s advice to makaria btw🤭😭🤌🏼✨
(i fucking loved this side of persephone)
“Now,” Persephone squeezed Makaria’s hand as they materialized together in front of the doors. “Remember, it’s not a successful party unless someone wants to fuck you and someone else wants to fight you.”
solid advice right💅💅💅

and when makaria was having a standoff with mr dickhead aka apollo😑😑
thanatos just stands behind her like a supportive boyfriend whipped for his girl🫶🏼🥹🪐
Thanatos was not unaffected by the sight. Apollo seemed frozen, but then he shook himself free of his stupor and stood. He pointed a finger at Makaria. “Listen here, I don’t take kindly to threats from—” Thanatos’s transformation into his most powerful form was almost complete, and he walked forward and took his place behind Makaria again.
At the sight of the God of death, his teeth gleaming in the sunlight and power dripping off of his armor like tar, Apollo paled. Makaria, without looking at Thanatos, assumed the reaction was aimed at her.
She grinned with pride.
“Threats from who? Did you forget that I was a goddess of death?” She twirled the sickle. Thanatos mimed yes to Apollo from behind Makaria. “Y-yes,” Apollo nodded without moving another inch, his eyes firmly fixed on Thanatos.
“You’d do well to not forget it again,” Makaria hissed.

damnnn they make such an amazing team😫😫😫

and this scene😮‍💨🦋🦋
but Makaria couldn’t see over the heads of the gods in front of her. She went up on her tiptoes to get a closer look, and barely managed to hold back a squeak as Thanatos wrapped his arm around her waist. He hoisted her a few inches up until they were waist to waist, her body flush with his. Makaria felt her insides turn to fire as she tried not to think about how he was holding her up with only one hand.
WITH ONE HAND OMGGG🤧🤩🔥🔥🔥

and the spice, goddd the fucking spice🛐🛐🛐
No one had ever wanted him like this, ever, someone who demanded he look her in the eye as she circled her hips on top of him and rode Thanatos like she owned him. He didn’t care if this was fleeting; he’d take every second that she gave him.

“Come for me, I want to hear what you sound like when you’re fucked by Death.

“How do you want it, my love?”

“Oh, my,” Thanatos grunted, “what a needy little goddess.” Makaria circled her waist and ground her ass against his erection, and Thanatos cursed. “What a needy god.” Makaria sing-songed in retort.

OMGGGGG😭👀🛐💍❤️‍🔥🥹

oh and persephone and fucking hades>>>🦋🦋🦋
“She’s here to drive Hades insane,” Hecate quipped, wagging her eyebrows in Persephone’s direction, who only laughed and toasted Hecate in response. “He’ll be fine,” Persephone sing-songed, sipping the nectar and wine. “His subjects are already dead. What’s he going to do? Kill someone?” This was apparently hilarious, although Makaria assumed there was some subtext that she was missing.

“Don’t listen to her. She’s been stringing Hades along ever since she ran away from her mother and escaped down here.” “I am not stringing him along.” Persephone turned up her nose playfully. “I am simply making sure that Hades realizes how mad he is for me before I acquiesce.” “Oh, he’s mad at you all right,” Hecate scoffed, but Persephone was unbothered.

some of my fav quotes💌💌

Thanatos studied her and was overcome with a vision of her in his home. No, not just in his home—on the other throne. The consort’s throne. He was so terrified by the sudden revelation of how well she might fit there that he refused to move a single inch, refused to breathe.

Makaria was at home, his home, waiting for him. It was a completely new sensation to Thanatos, and it felt like he had been drugged.

“I take it that you don’t mind I did a little redecorating?” Her voice sent shivers down his spine, and Thanatos shook his head. He pulled back to get a better look at her face without loosening her grip.
“You could burn this house to the ground because you liked it better that way and i’d agree with you”

This time, he cradled her to his chest, holding her against him like she was precious. Makaria fell asleep surrounded by the infamous Thanatos, the scourge of the gods, purring like a kitten in her ear.

“Everyone knows your ‘moping death god’ routine is over.”
“It most certainly is not!” Thanatos crossed his arms over his chest and almost pouted in response.
“It is.” Makaria grinned sweetly.
“I do think I have to take some of the blame for that though.”

The burden and blessing of death was now shared.
The woman who had become a goddess found life in death, and Death himself had found life doing the one thing he swore he’d never do.
Death and his consort were one.

(temporary review)

If there’s one greek myth couple I adore more than Hades and Persephone, it’s Thanatos and Makaria. These two doesn’t have a “canon” relationship, but that’s just makes it that much better seeing the takes on them. And this book wasn’t an exception.

I loved everything about it, Thanatos being an insecure fluff ball, Makaria being the emotional stability he can lean on, while also being the more mature one in most cases. I just loved their dynamic here.

I can't exactly put my finger on what I love so much about era accurate takes on myths, but honestly this series fairs really well. Especially since it is working with less recorded couples and pairings. It's this aspect that makes me come back to this.

I was one of the lucky few to have the opportunity to read this book as an ARC (advance reader copy) and I am excited to report that it was AMAZING, and you should read it.

In the author’s note, Molly mentions how “the beauty of mythology is how it transforms as it is retold” and I couldn’t agree more. I have been a mythology nerd for as long as I can remember, and I am in awe at how seamlessly she weaves her fiction into the existing mythos. It is beautiful and serves to add layers of depth to characters that we can see in the stories from ancient times. Imagining how these untouchable characters would react when put in the real-world scenarios of adventure and romance is a talent that Molly has in spades. She really knows her mythology and she has a knack for villainizing the standard pantheon and making the darker, misunderstood gods and Goddesses into the heroes. I love it so much and I cannot get enough. Molly will forever be an instant-buy author for me.

The characters in this series are literally GODS, and they are somehow still always relatable. They have flaws, they make mistakes, and they struggle to know and accept themselves. Thanatos has an awful reputation because of the nature of his work collecting souls, and after centuries of this reputation beating him down, he honestly believes that he isn’t worthy of the kind of love that is being presented to him. Their love grows slow and steady. It starts out a little rough between them as Thanatos’ solitary lifestyle is threatened by her presence, but he warms up to her after a bit and their blossoming friendship is adorable. Watching him crack himself open to let Makaria in was a beautiful mess that broke my heart and then stitched it back together again. I recommend it to everyone.

The book was deep and soulful while also finding a way to make me giggle until tears came to my eyes. The best part of this series is the cameos! All our favorite big names from Mythology and even some smaller ones are summoned to say “hi” whenever the stories call for their presence. I love the way that even the cameo characters have fully fleshed personalities and bring their own flavor to the plot. In this story, she gives us a little bit of Orpheus and Eurydice, which is one of my very favorite myths, and teasing a future book in the series. Hephaestus is also climbing up the ladder of my favorites and I can’t wait to read more of him. I love how she uses one book to set up the foundation for the next and give us a sneak peak of the characters before we get their POV.

This book will take the darkest parts of you, hold them close and make them feel a little lighter in your chest. It is a journey for the characters to learn to accept themselves, face their loneliness and make room for each other in spaces they have always occupied on their own.

Pros: Greek mythology retelling, underworld Gods/Goddesses, self-love and discovery, forced proximity romance.
Cons: I honestly cannot think of one… I tried. Read this book.

There was a darkness in his gaze that was all too different from the blackness that overtook him when he became sickle and scythe."

The 3rd installment in the Asphodel series centers around Thanatos and Makaria. I highly, highly recommend reading the books in order!!

I LOVED this book. 🖤🖤🖤The characters spoke to me in ways I cant even begin to express. They were incredibly well written. Molly does an amazing job writing about complex human emotions and handling them really well as the story progresses and the characters develop.

I loved the pacing and the writing in this book so so much. There were so many times I caught myself grinning from ear to ear either from excitement or from the thrill of the scene or from Thanatos's emo-ness (💀). Speaking of Thanatos, I LOVE HIM. 😍😂 I know Aeetes is a fan fave (book 2) so maybe im the unpopular opinion? Idk. But if I had to point out a character that was exactly my type, boom Thanatos. 🤣💀😮‍💨

"There was no soul on earth that held a greater capacity for love than Death himself—but who could fall in love with the reaper?" AHEM- 🙋🏻‍♀️ ME. ME. MEEEE. thanks.

Fantasy? Greek myth retellings? Romance? Multi POV?Good character development?? Relatable??? Transportive?? Binge worthy?? Cameos of characters from book 1&2?? Well written?? Highly recommend?? Yes yes and yes.

“There is no soul on earth that held a greater capacity for love than Death himself…”

Enamoured in Death by Molly Tullis aka @thebibliophileblonde is Book 3 in the Asphodel Series.

As I said in my stories, I shed a little tear and did a happy dance when this ARC appeared on my kindle. It was so unexpected and I feel really honoured to have been picked (my 2nd ever ARC read 🥹) anyway, moving on…

Oh sweet Thanatos, you gorgeous God of Death in all your *redacted* glory 😍 you are worthy and Makaria is going to make sure you remember that. Molly handled his story with such grace, that even the most tender hearted and vulnerable moments felt like a sucker punch to the chest (in the best way!)

Now we all know that Molly can craft brilliant but relatable FMC and Makaria is no different. I found myself saying “yaaasssss queen” on multiple occasions and becoming her biggest cheerleader as her character development grew.

Our previous protagonists Nyx and Hecate return and it’s so nice we get to see more of their relationship . Plus Aëëtes and Hermes bring some much needed laugh out loud moments to the table.

Molly has yet again created a tantalising narrative that hooks you from the start. You will laugh and you will cry and at the end you left desperately awaiting the next instalment.

Pre-order is now open to get your hands on this fabulous book (publication date 9th September)

How Molly continues to write main characters that I resonate with to the point that I’m in tears, I’ll never know (probably some sort of witchcraft). Wasn’t sure I’d connect with another of her characters the way I did with Hecate. Regardless, she did it and I’m so grateful. A book that is more than just a good story is always a gem.

Makaria is a new goddess that’s trying to prove herself while growing into her new role before time runs out. Watching her come to terms with who she was while mortal and who she is as a goddess is truly inspiring. It’s something I need to be reminded of from time to time when it comes to considering myself “worthy”. Thank you, Molly.

Thanatos has been accurately nicknamed Daddy Death - he’s broody, imposing and terribly misunderstood, not that he’ll ever admit he cares. Getting to see the different sides of the God of Death was beautiful and made me fall in love with him, in more ways than one.

But let’s not forget how important a good story is too. Everything that’s happening alongside the developing relationship of Thanatos and Makaria, professional and otherwise, is interesting and horrifying (ugh Apollo) in a way that will draw you in and keep you hooked.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

So…this was an improvement from the first book of the author. I haven’t read the previous books in this series but the pointless spoilers at the beginning of the book made sure I won't be picking them up. They could have easily been avoided, since they provided no meaningful information to the story, and this is supposed to be a series made up of standalones. Anyway.

I began reading this book with no expectations or preconceptions whatsoever, and I found myself enjoying the read. The story started really well, grabbing my attention with the unique beginning. But it soon went downhill…like the Romanov Oracle, sigh.

The characters are a bit more fleshed out than the ones from The Romanov Oracle, especially the male protagonist, he’s not the bimbo that Rasputin was; however, they sometimes had out of character lines. For example, Thanatos is a dark and sulking character, very reserved and devoted to his work. So when this happens in a scene with Makaria…: “Thanatos paused and looked at her in shock, wondering where this sudden onslaught of confidence had come from. Damn, if it doesn’t look good on her though…No! He almost had to physically shake himself to stay focused” …it was kinda weird. Also, there were way to many curse words thrown around like candy and they just ruined the mood a bit, they weren’t really necessary most of the time.

Makaria’s transition from an old dying woman to an immortal felt really forced, because she’s suddenly in the body of a young woman…but she also talks and acts like one too. As for the secondary characters, they feel like empty shells, and I confused them most of the time. The ‘villain’…was a joke really, he's a caricature of a villain, more fit to a cartoon character: Apollo’s introduced as a slimy and cruel god, and he does awful things…just because he’s slimy and cruel, he doesn’t have any motive, any backstory; he’s in three or four scenes, being mean and all, and at the end the Underworld gods just kill him. The worst treatment is reserved to Artemis though, my queer icon, who we’re led to think is a future antagonist in the series, and that’s just disrespectful. My poor girl...

The plot and worldbuilding were very very messy, if not non-existent. The book really just consists of scenes that are mostly meaningless, with a few events that tried to tie it all together and oh god, a LOT of descriptions, that ruined the pacing. The prose felt juvenile in its excessive solemnity, making every character overly 'perfect', in and out, and in the way they talk and act; the descriptions were so redundant and verbose they took away from the action, slowing and dragging the pace; the book would have been at least 100 pages shorter if it weren’t so descriptive. There’s pages of detailed depiction of the party that’s hunting down Apollo and it’s underwhelming as fuck, other than weird, because I just imagined Makaria turning around, closely inspecting everyone around her, taking note of what everyone’s wearing and looking like. Also, there were too many references to angels, heaven and hell, and even one reference to that would have been too much in a book about Greek myths and gods, as inaccurate as it may be; it’s just out of place and it makes the story’s theme a confused mess.

The romance was badly managed because of the immediate attraction between the main characters, Thanatos and Makaria, who see each other for the first time and ‘blood starts rushing through their veins’, they feel ‘a connection’ and bla bla bla; but also because of the sexual development throughout the book: the blowjob scene felt forced, so that the steady flow of their relationship suddenly rushed forward, just to be brought backwards and forward again, resulting in a big mess.

Overall, I think that a good editor could have improved the story, which is in any case better than The Romanov Oracle, and at last, they did a good job with the cover.

I received an eARC from the author, and this represents my honest opinion.

This book is still my favourite of the series so far, it’s just wonderful and it has ended up becoming a comfort book because of HOW good the story is and how well-developed the characters are; The romance, the high stakes, the TENSION!!!

Reread was great ❤️ I’ll do another reread once more books from this universe come out haha.

(ME! I kept shouting after reading this 🙊)

This book encompasses elements of Greek myth with romance. It follows Thanatos, who is the god of death. He is “assigned” a partner in the “lucrative” business that is soul reaping: Makaria.

Makaria is the last living priestess of Nyx, and when she passes away from old age, Nyx makes her into a young immortal. Of course, this immortality is conditional, and she must prove herself worthy of it as the Goddess of Blessed Death. There is lots of tension and banter that occurs during her’s & Thanatos’ interactions, which I loved.

Meanwhile, Apollo is an imbecile (nothing new), unleashing his wrath on the mortal realm. It’s up to the deities to stop him & bring balance back. The battle scenes were awesome I must say, I couldn’t take my eyes off the page!

Also: Hermes & Aeëtes make a cameo , I was so happy to see them they’re entertaining 😂💕 Particularly Hermes, his character is something else I love him to bits. He’s too witty and funny.

Thanatos is like your resident hot emo sad boy, and Makaria reminded me of an Angel of death in this! I loved their dynamic so much. Thanatos is worthy of love, even if he doesn’t think he is, and Makaria is just wonderful I love them both.

Also, I appreciated that the author called her Makaria… a makaria is a tradition similar to a repast after a funeral in Greek Orthodox religion. I thought it very fitting, and also means “blessing”. In Canon Greek Myth, Makaria is a daughter of Hades and is the embodiment of a blessed death (well, at least in the Suda) Again, really fitting! Her character was so nice, she cared for Thanatos and those around her, and had a killer character development.

There were so many tender moments in this book… but also there was a good amount of spice. True balance in my opinion hihi 🤭

Great writing & world building, stellar character development, spicy scenes, and more, what’s not to love! I even ordered myself a physical copy I loved it so much. I really recommend this book.

DNF at 46%
So I picked this up because I follow the author on insta and it was free on kindle. I am so glad I was never curious enough before to actually spend money on this book.
The main character Makaria is a shell devoid of any personality, she's just your standard sassy girlboss, even though she has no business being one. She goes from being weepy, insecure and sheltered to snapping sassy remarks at Olympian gods who are thousands of years old and ten times more powerful than her.
Speaking of being thousands of years old, that's my main problem with the book. None of the immortals are portrayed with any nuance or regard for their standing and age. Why are Apollo and Aphrodite acting like bratty five year olds who don't understand how death works? The author's choice to have all the gods (except those from the Underworld, who are angels that do no wrong) willfully misunderstand Thanatos' role in the execution of death just so he can have a reason to be a broody outcast feels bizarre. If you write an actual God behaving like a pre teen schoolyard bully, then you have to know you're doing something wrong.
Regarding the romance, I tried to enjoy it, I truly did, despite the insta love trope that I don't particularly like, but the author's obsession with telling rather than showing pulled me out of the story constantly. Just when they were starting to have some decent banter, the narration just kept reminding me of how flirty they were being. Are you afraid I won't notice if you don't remind me every two sentences?
The second star is only because I actually kind of enjoyed Thanatos' character and found him and his arc to be entertaining, but his companion (and everyone else in the UW tbh) was insufferable.
I DNFed before 50% so I don't know how it ends, but I'm sure I can figure it out just fine. I read some light spoilers here and I know I made a good choice dropping it. The author has some nice recs on Instagram but I don't think I'll be picking up any of her books again, even if they're free.

This is book 3 of the Asphodel series by Molly and I have to say this one was my fave.

In this photos I’m channeling my inner Nyx since I done cosplay of her. The wonderful Nyx who meddles in this book a little. All to help her son Thanatos not be alone.

I loved that about Nyx. She’s the most powerful goddess, but she’s also a caring mother to her children.

Now for the story. Gods above it was perfect. Thanatos is everything I wanted him to be and more, he wasn’t a stone cold man. He had feelings and insecurities and his own worries. Molly made these perfect Greek gods who lived for millions of years imperfect.

Makarias journey was such a refreshing story. A woman turned into a goddess having to learn about the underworld and having to navigate the politics. I loved it. It was so well written.

The tension between Thanatos and Makaria was perfect, they first struggle to work together. But eventually learned how each other can be support especially for Thanatos who was not used to having someone to rely on.

Thanatos…he melted my heart at times a god who’s used to being the villain, used to being disliked and alone. His journey of learning to love himself and let someone else love him, was so well done.

This was my favourite book of the 3 even though Nyx is still my fave goddess.

This series is perfect for fans of romance and greek mythology.

Molly killed it AGAIN. I mean no one can replace Aeetes in my heart so Lost to Witchcraft will always be my favorite but oh I loved sweet Thanatos. The way Molly wrote his insecurities was just perfect. The relationship between Thanatos and Makaria was just like perfectly healing I loved it so much. I love them so much and how fun to meet a bunch of new characters! Getting to know Hades and Persephone better was fantastic and I can see why fans demanded Molly write a Hades and Persephone novella.

Enamored in Death is the third book in the Asphodel series and, in my opinion, the best book yet.

Plot

Since the beginning of time, Thanatos has ruled as the God of Death, disregarding his own terrifying reputation and the loneliness that comes with it. The one thing that ancient gods don't do well is change, so Thanatos is forced to make accommodations when Nyx, the Goddess of Night, assigns him a consort for the first time. The newest goddess of the Underworld, Makaria, was chosen by Nyx herself from her solitary priestess life. She realizes that her newfound immortality is more flimsy than she had anticipated when she finds out that it is conditional. Apollo, meanwhile, has a long-standing animosity and painstakingly organizes his retaliation. He may endanger the entirety of Greece when he lets loose his wrath on the mortal realm. In an effort to rescue the planet, Thanatos and Makaria are compelled to work together. However, in order to succeed, they both must put aside their differences and learn how to work as a team.

The plot of the book was better and more interesting than the previous two books. One thing that I liked was the pacing. The pacing in this book is better than the previous novels in the series. It's way more fast and we have more action scenes.

Characters

Makaria

I think she must be my favorite MC in this series. Makaria was a woman that was turned into a goddess by Nyx when she died. She was intelligent and brave and it was good to see her learn more about her and her powers.

Thanatos

Thanatos is the God of Death and also my favorite love interest. He was more fleshed out. Despite what people thing in the mortal world, Thanatos has feelings and cares about the mortals to deeply. I like how the author portrayed his fears and his flaws.

Apollo

He was the villain in this story. Well, I would have like to know more about him and it was the first time that I saw Apollo being described the way he was in this book.

Writing

The writing is good. I really liked her writing more in this story than I did with the other two novels.

World-Building

I liked to see more about Thanatos and his powers and it was interesting seeing Makaria as a new goddess. I would have like to see more of Makaria and how she started to discover her powers more than I did during my reading.

Romance

I really liked the romance between them. I like their chemistry and the banter between Thanatos and Makaria was one of the best parts of the story. I like the ending and I'm happy for them.

Final Thoughts

Well, after this book I'm excited to read the next story in this series, especially after the epilogue.

My ratings and reviews for the other books in this series

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC for Enamored in Death by Molly Tullis. I’ve followed her writing journey since her first debut novel, The Romanov Oracle. While each book has a special place in my heart, this was her best book yet.

Thanatos, the god of death, son of Nyx and Erebus, a god of the underworld, is a lonely god. He cares for the souls he comes to collect but many blame him for something that is out of his control. His mom, Nyx, sees how lonely he is and can’t even recall the last time he has had a break. She decides to award one of her priestesses to become a goddess of blessed death to help relieve Thanatos’ load. Being a workaholic, Thanatos is not thrilled with having to train a new goddess to take over.

Makaria has always been a dedicates priestess since she can remember to Nyx. When she had the opportunity presented to her to become a goddess of the underworld, she took it. She finally felt like she was where she was always meant to be. That is until she met the only other god of death, her new teacher/mentor, Thanatos.

The writing is so smooth and it feels like reading poetry. One of my favorite quotes from the book is in the prologue, when Molly is describing death. “…It was like slipping into a warm bath or falling a sleep after a long day…”. It only gets better from there. At least once a day one of her quotes pops into my head that gets me daydreaming about Thanatos. He is definitely being added to my list of book boyfriends.

The spice scenes are exactly what I needed. Molly knows how to take her time creating emotional connections before the characters get intimate, and to me that makes it so much better. We do get dual POVs which allows us into their minds while they are working through their feelings.
There aren’t many Greek mythology retellings that share the story of Thanatos, and other gods Molly has introduced in her series, so I found it refreshing to hear new stories with her unique voice. These gods are humanized by having the same insecurities and worries we have with ourselves and in relationships. I absolutely love the character development that Makaria and Thanatos go through individually and together.

I can truly go on forever talking about this book but I don't want to spoil anything for you. if you love Greek mythology retellings, with a grumpy MMC and strong willed FMC, with a slow burn romance, and a sort of work environment, then you'll love this book 🖤

Gods where do I start with this review… I instantly knew I was going to adore this book from page one. I really enjoyed Molly’s first book Consort of Darkness and fell in love with her writing style and mythological retellings.

This is the third book in the Asphodel series, a collection of Greek mythologies - each a retelling of love stories from the gods and goddesses. Despite there being some links in each of the books, you don’t need to read them in any order, they will make complete sense as stand alone books.

Enamored in Death is the story of Thanatos, the God of Death (aka Daddy Death), finding his love and finding himself. Thanatos is feared by humans and gods alike, after an eternity of everyone hating the God of Death, Thanatos begins to believe others opinions of himself.

This book had a bit of everythiiiing - slow burn, spice, sisterhood & found family, grumpy sunshine, action & battles… The pace is this book is superb, but I really couldn’t put it down in the second half!

I felt an affinity with both Thanatos and Makaria, their feelings of unworthiness cracked my heart during moments of the book - as a pair they grumpy sunshine vibes, with Thanatos not wishing to help Makaria in her journey for immortality at the beginning of the book.

Once again the side characters in Molly’s book are elite and add so much to the storyline and the feels as a whole. This sisterhood between Makaria, Nyx, Hecate and Persephone made my hurt feel so full.

I loved the glimpses into other characters relationships, especially Hypnos & Hersperus and Hades & Persephone. I’m hoping we see more of these in the future… perhaps in their own books….?

The romance and tension between Thanatos and Makaria is a sloooow burn, which has delightful peaks in the form of some spicy, sexy scenes.

Basically, Enamored in Death was incredible. You should read it.

Some thoughts from throughout the book…:
* Oh, Daddy Death I will love you any day…
* Awww Hypnos & Hesperus
* Ffs, Seph leave her to her date with Thanatos!
* Hermes stop bad mouthing Daddy Death!!
* Apollo you are an actual d*ck
* Yaaaas Death Goddess own your sh***t

This story follows Thanatos, the God of Death, who believes himself to be unloveable despite how much he craves to be loved. He comes to accept that he will forever be alone, because who can love that which is death.
Makaria, Nyx’s last high priestess, is chosen to be the Goddess of Blessed Death and share Thanatos’s purpose. However, she must prove herself worthy of the title within the year or her shade will be wiped away. Thanatos agrees to be her teacher, and their magic sparks when around one another but will it be enough for them to both accept that they are worthy; Makaria for her new life and purpose as a immortal, and Thanatos for Makaria’s love and partnership in death…

It has gods and immortals, parties and festivals, battles, disasters, death, and of course, romance.
Molly has once again created and developed characters I immediately fell in love with. Their individual journeys and love story was relatable and super engaging. I flew through it and couldn’t put it down!

Thanatos may be the reaper himself, but deep down he’s a softy just looking for love, with a heart of gold. Loved how he proves that people are deeper than their appearances and reputation.
Makaria is a follower that learns how to lead. Love her journey to finding herself, her voice and her place in the immortal world beside Thanatos.
Their enemies to lovers, slow burn gripped me from the moment they met. Their close proximity and “I’ll be your teacher” moments brought sparks and tension that had me wanting more. Both looking for love and a sense of home, and finding it in each other!

Side note, the Goddess gang of the Underworld that Molly has assembled here is a crew of women I want to hang with. Definitely want to see more of that vibe in the next book, which I already can’t wait for! Thanks again Molly for sending me this ARC. As you can see, I loved it!

“She was about to cheat Death himself, and in doing so, she would run right into his arms.”

*late review since I wasn't able to find this book on GoodReads at the time that I finished it, and was only able to review it on StoryGraph!

Firstly, thank you ever so much to Molly Tullis for letting me read the ARC for Enamored In Death. What a truly memorable honor and experience! Here is my honest review.

Hello, I am here once again to implore you to read the Asphodel Series by Molly Tullis.

Enamored in Death focuses on Thanatos, the God of Death, and Makaria, a new goddess chosen by our all-powerful mama Nyx, the Goddess of Night.

Our 7ft death daddy, Thanatos, is deeply devoted to his work, even though he is misunderstood and does not have the best reputation among humans and even fellow gods. Enter misunderstood emo death daddy side.

Makaria is the new girl on the block, and she is just trying to figure out her new identity as a goddess while trying to learn her powers—oh, and her future isn’t exactly what I would call “guaranteed”

The two struggle through their vulnerabilities and insecurities while juggling their duties to the dead and immature gods out to get them. Molly’s writing makes you feel every moment of uncertainty, anxiety, love, and laugh and cry alongside the characters.

Another great aspect of Enamored In Death is the cameos. Each book in the series can be read out of order, BUT reading them in order gives you that exciting feeling when previous characters pop up or when you get to learn more about a character you’ve briefly met!

Trust me when I say you will love revisiting characters from the previous books and… beloved immortals we all love in this bookish community. I won’t spoil the surprise, but Molly gives us QUITE the treat!

first and foremost, thanks to Molly for an ARC copy of this beautiful story!

before diving into the story itself, i want to talk a little bit about the asphodel series as a whole. with all the greek retellings that are out right now (also great reads!) it’s refreshing to read retellings of some of the less well known figures/outside of the big 12. i think molly picks very intriguing characters which is part of what makes her books so enjoyable to read. i also love that while each of these books is able to be read as a standalone, the characters and events of the previous books are still mentioned/play a part in the new story.

now for the nitty gritty.

Thanatos has been the God of Death - forever- and has spent that entire time alone (more or less). His mom, Nyx, seizes the chance to give him a partner - the recently deceased Makaria who was a priestess of Nyx. Thanatos is forced to train her and things are less than ideal.

spoilers ahead:

if you’ve read other books by molly, i’m sure you can see where this leads. the two eventually (begrudgingly) start working together and romance blossoms. other gods feature in the story -Nyx, Hecate, Persephone, etc. but the real trouble maker is Apollo. he makes a mess of things and the gods of the underworld band together to put a stop to it.

dispersed throughout is a bit of spice but i would consider it a fairly slow burn. our two MCs are forced to work together - not quite grumpy/sunshine (bc in my opinion, makaria isn’t the most sunny) but that’s what it could be considered.

overall, a good read and great addition to the asphodel series.

Another absolute banger. Yes, Thanatos is a big scary death daddy but he is so soft for Makaria and that is amazing. I loved watching them figure out their life together - both their daily work and their more personal time together. I also loved watching Makaria come into herself. She was so relatable - some of her lines hit hard for me. She might be my new fave Asphodel FMC!

The sex scenes were give or take for me - none were particularly spicy and I didn't need them to know that this couple was made for each other.

I didn't feel too strongly about the 'villain' in this one and it would be nice to see an overarching plot connecting throughout the series but I understand if that's not what the author wants to do. But if you consider that this story is more about an internal struggle for both of the MCs and really aims at teaching deep lessons, like a lot of Greek myths, I think it all works out!

There were a bunch of cameos in this book as well, which entwines this series further into Greek mythology. I can't wait to see who we meet next and where they take us.

"The secret is this : there is no greater force that decides you are worthy. ... The only person who decides what your place is in this world is you."

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I always thought I was exclusively a Hades x Persephone girlie, but I will definitely make room for Thanatos and Makaria! I've always loved the mythology of the underworld and this story is a magnificent addition to its lore. I love how the Asphodel series builds onto each previous story, so we get glimpses of our past favourite characters. It was so good to see Nyx in her role of loving mother and caring goddess, taking Makaria into her care and giving her everything that Makaria has missed in life. Who doesn't love a mother scheming to make her son happy? Gods know that Thanatos could use some happiness. His internalised rejection and scorn tore at my heart. Molly is well versed in writing pain and trauma, which becomes very clear once more in this book. For in these stories, trauma is layers and layers of interaction, old wounds being reopened again and again. The fact that Makaria immediately looks past everything that has others fleeing from Thanatos, makes her so refreshing and honest. Death is such a difficult topic; it holds so many meanings and connotations. The duality of death has been beautifully immersed into this book. I love Thanatos and Makaria as a couple and I will never say no to more Death god(des)s!

*ARC Review*
“Enamored in Death,” Tullis’ most recent full-length addition to the Asphodel series, is top-notch! As someone who loves Greek mythology and has studied the pantheon, the attention to detail is lovely and makes my nerdy heart sing! The love story between Thanatos and Makaria is so well done. There’s angst, healing from trauma, and a slow burn that you can’t help but get swept up in! The spice is *superb* and doesn’t supersede the story, but feels so essential to the journey of our death god and goddess. My only wish would be for more back story and processing for Makaria, because I see so much of myself in her! Seeing our beloved characters from the previous novels made this novel feel like coming home. I’ve loved getting so see this author grow from The Romanov Oracle all the way here, to our newest “Death Daddy,” and I can’t wait to see where she goes from here! She’s become a one-click author for me!

Molly has again taken underrated and underappreciate characters from Greek mythology and woven a beautiful story of love, and finding beauty and acceptance in death and the afterlife. She creates depth to her characters and allows for moments that hit you right in the feels, while alos balancing it with humour and quips that keep you wanting more. Makaria is introduced in a completely new way as a woman who has lived her whole life and passed on into something completely new and unfamiliar. Death daddy Thanatos is a solitary grump who needs a new look on both life and death. Their journey to accepting themselves and each other will keep you hooked to the very end. If you are a fan of greek mythology and especially if you feel that every new retelling is some modernized version of the classics, this is the series for you!

3.5/5

This story starts with Makaria being turned into a goddess of death, and working to find her place and her power in her new world, with the help of Thanatos.

I love how Molly incoporates other mythology (Pyramus and Thisbe, Sisyphus, etc) to show the deaths, and what Makaria and Thanatos have to do and endure.

I love the characters Makaria and Thanatos. Watching them each grow, and just getting to know them. The thing that falls flat for me though is their romantic relationship. It all feels awkard/forced to me. Its instant attraction, then a constant back and forth of running from those feelings, to suddenly oral and changing home decor.

I like them together, but I just felt like that part of the book could have been paced differently, or reworked somehow. I do prefer her relationship building in her last book, Lost to Witchcraft.

STUNNING

Molly Tullis builds beautiful worlds and characters in deft strokes of her keyboard. The things she can make you feel under the guise of a retelling of a world-renowned myth is truly unreal. Thanatos was a story I was waiting to hear since her first book in the Asphodel Series….and it did not disappoint. The power of this beautiful series is the heart of the myths and legends themselves. Molly perfectly writes their flaws in ways that make you dissect your own trauma and fears and brilliantly hands you the keys of recognition. I truly cannot put into words the way Molly can make you feel see and heard. 5/5 stars and counting. Brilliant writing from a brilliant mind.

Molly hit it out of the park with this one! I truly didn’t think that I would hate a character more than Zeus in the Asphodel series but 😬😬😬
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And Thanatos 🥰 oh how I fell for that god of death. “There was no soul on earth that held a greater capacity for love than Death himself”…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Makaria… on multiple occasions I found myself saying, “go OFF GIRL!!”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And we got to catch up with our lovely women Nyx and Hecate a bit here too! I would LOVE to get more Hades and Persephone. Watching them as a side couple was a joy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don’t want to say too much, so I don’t have any spoilers for y’all! But if you love your Greek mythology, y’all don’t wanna miss out on book 3 of this series. Get them all! You won’t regret it 😎

My new favourite Greek Mythology author has done it again.

Thanatos is absolutely the Greek equivalent to a sad emo boi and I unapologetically adore him.

His grumpy exterior hides a man who wants to be loved, but doesn’t feel like he deserves to be loved…and then in walks Makaria. Stubborn, strong willed and determined, she is able to break down even the God of Deaths barriers.

Makaria is a beautiful, funny and fiercely independent FMC and I couldn’t express in words just how much I love her.

From the minute Thanatos saved her from Apollo I was smitten with their relationship and their blossoming romance and Molly continues to provide us with beautiful, era based, mythology stories that deserves more praise than I can ever give.

I feel really awful giving this book such a low rating, as I wanted to love it and I think the author is amazing (go follow her Instagram)!

But unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book. I couldn’t relate to the characters or feel for them, which I acknowledge may have been because I started with the third book in a series?

I just felt like it was lacklustre, and I frequently was confused by the sentence structures. They were constructed in an unfamiliar way or utilised strange combinations (even the title, “Enamoured in Death”?). I found it took me out of the story so much and ruined the flow.

The book was also nowhere near as 🌶️🌶️🌶️ as I was expecting….

My heart is a squishy blob

Thanatos is an absolute baby angel bean and I will hear no criticism of this fact. I loved this book so freaking much it’s almost absurd. Excellent (and I do mean excellent) characters, a fantastic plot, spice that was oh so nice, a dash of comeuppance- what’s not to love?? Thanatos and Makaria are some of my most beloved characters that I’ve ever read. He had me at the prologue, and she had me at breakfast. I could’ve sobbed. This series is awesome, and I’m on to Hermes’ book now!
