This was a fairly good book, but could have been much better. Choppy writing, and odd dialog. Story jumped around too much and alot went on behind our backs and left us in the cold. Way too much detail at times, and none at other times. Terrible editing. The typos drove me nuts!
This book was one that you couldn't read fast enough... It had the perfect blend of suspence... I truely enjoyed it... I read it in 2 days and my sister read it in 1 day... can't wait for more books by this Author...
“Deadly Treasure” is a new LDS mystery novel by first-time author Jillayne Clements. Set against the backdrop of the Lost Rhoades Mine, the story combines legends from the past and a contemporary setting.
Lexi Rhoades is heartbroken when her grandfather dies. He called her a few days before and left a message on her cell, telling her he wants to talk to her. But by the time she gets the message, it’s too late.
While clearing out her grandfather’s things, she comes across a trunk filled with old belongings, one of them being a locket. Lexi finds herself drawn to the locket and decides to keep it as a memento of her grandfather, only to learn that the locket holds the key to a mystery that has been in the family for generations.
The Lost Rhoades Mine was something of a family legend, the story passed down from parents to children. Lexi knew she was descended from Thomas Rhoades, the man who was supposedly chosen by the local Indians to come into the mine and take what was needed for the good of the Church, but she was never sure if the story was true or not. Her grandfather always believed it was and intended to prove it. As she goes through his things, she wonders if that’s why he tried to contact her before his death. Her curiosity sparked, she decides to go on a treasure hunt of her own.
The story combines mystery, suspense and romance in a way that makes for an enjoyable read. I did feel that the mystery could have been introduced a little more naturally, and I also felt that the dialogue became a bit preachy toward the end, but those two small criticisms aside, I recommend “Deadly Treasures” for a light afternoon’s read.
OK! I have a lot to say about this book. First and foremost, the back of the book makes it sound like this mystery plot-line with the typical romance sprinkled in. That is very misleading. It was almost like the author wanted to write a chick-flick but wanted the main story line to be more serious so she put in a murder. It just didn't fit together very well. The love plot was almost to gushy to bear. I'd had it up to here when I got to the part about the six-pack. Lexi just didn't know what she wanted and it seemed like one moment she was thinking about Derek/Brad and the next she was talking about her grandfather's murder. So my overall feelings of this book are: Dear Author, please write either a chick-lit story or a mystery. Please don't combine them. It just didn't work well. But I think that separate they would be enjoyable and entertaining.
An okay story. Really choppy and jumpy. It seems to skip on details and events and doesn't reveal where one of the main characters ends up. They just "disappear". I guess it's not bad for a first novel, but I can't say I enjoyed it or that it was well written. The editing was also terrible - way too many spelling and typo errors.
This started out pretty good. The mystery is interesting. I have found that I have a hard time getting into books that the main characters are barely past teenagers. I guess that could be what happens when you hit 30 :) . Overall, it is a good mystery, a bit too churchy for me, but otherwise pretty good.
I am not a huge novel reader, but knowing Jillayne, I was really excited to read her first novel. It was a quick read, read in a couple days- I couldn't put it down until I knew what happened! Personally, I don't know how anyone writes novels- it is a talent and a wonder to me. Jillayne is truly a talented author and I look forward to her future novels! Great for teenagers and young adults!
Since I grew up in "Rhodes Valley", I decided to read this. It was OK. Someone is killing people to gathering pieces of an old map that shows the spot of the Lost Rhodes Mine and the gold there. Lexi's Grandpa Rhodes dies, and she in caught in the mystery and action and, of course, the romance.
This is a good story. She follows a fictional descendant of the Rhodes of Rhodes mines in the Uintah mountains. It is interesting. Clements gets a little too descriptive at times, but it is fairly well written.
This was a fun book, because I know the author! Her husband has been Justin's boss for 7 years and they are a really fun couple. I am not a huge fan of LDS fiction, but I really did like this one!
It was a bit corny, but my 14 year old daughter suggested that I read it. The plot was better than I had anticipated. It was a quick read but I wouldn't read it again.
I really enjoyed this book. I am always looking for a good book and this was definetly a good one. I liked the detail! I can't wait for another book by Jillayne!! :)
