DNF at 100 pages. I really did give this book a chance, because I wanted to like it so much. Normally, Paris in the 1920's and an intrepid heroine are a recipe for a happy reading experience for me. But though it should be full of action (not to mention fun in an amazing setting), this book LAAAAGGGED. And it wasn't even a good kind of lagging, like the author wanting to show us different sights and sounds of the time. It was just mostly dull or cardboard cutout characters having bland, needlessly long conversations.

The biggest problem with La semeuse d'effroi for me, though, was the total lack of insight or connection into the main character. Sophie has lost her parents in a tragic moment of political upheaval, experienced life straddling two cultures, moved to a totally different city - and yet, we get so little insight into her emotions, and even less into her past. And she can just do EVERYTHING, effortlessly. She's smart and an acrobat and a trumpet player and this and that, and so on. It's not that you can't have convincing genius or super-talented characters, but because we don't get a sense of Sophie being a real person, she feels like a blank canvass.

I wish the author had spent more time connecting with Sophie, doing research (or showing he did) into what it was like to live and grow up in China at that time as a biracial/bicultural person, and just generally getting to know Sophie. What does she really love? What are her faults? We only get shallow glimmers of what could have been an interesting, compelling, well-drawn character, which is a shame.

The same can be said for the murder that kicks off the plot (after a lot of dawdling) - it just sort of comes out of nowhere. This can happen in mystery books, of course, but here it just didn't feel like all those pages of dull or overlong conversations were worth this apparently important character's sudden appearance and death.

For quality of writing, I'd probably give this book 2 stars. It wasn't poorly written, but I felt that it was a bit too stiff and academic for a middle grade or YA book. That stiffness, combined with the poor character work and lack of commitment to the should-be amazing setting of 1920's Paris (I feel like I'm watching the second Fantastic Beasts movie again...), made me lower my overall rating to 1 star.
