Largely a series of newspaper reports of the MCC tour to the West Indies. Although Swanton writes knowledgably and thoughtfully, the lack of interviews and player input means that this book is dry and lacks much interest aside from reading of the blow by blow account of the tour. Events off the field are invisible, the players seem distant and it lacks the content that move it away from simple newspaper reporting
Interesting historical document - essentially a rehash of the Daily Telegraph reports of the tour, with many of the contemporary views of race and, especially, class. But there was little by way of real insight and I found the writer’s belief that he always knows better than everyone else, especially the players (although not so much the ‘gentlemen’) and willingness to criticise others (selectors, players, spectators, journalists) rather jarring.
