The Divine Principles of Mothering

Rate this book
Mothering is both wonderful and challenging. Many a mother wants to know what is right for her children, especially in a world where the traditional strengths of the family are being questioned and undermined. Even committed mothers find popular child-rearing methods and theories to be a maze of confusion and conflicting ideas. Fortunately, there are divine principles of motherhood that transcend time, place, and circumstance. Using gospel truths, secular research, and life experience, Janice Nielson identifies the essential principles that provide a reliable lens through which mothers everywhere can determine the right thing to do at any moment.

My aunt who has a PhD in psychology and raised 11 children just published this book on mothering. My mother sent it to me as a surprise Mother's Day gift and I've just finished it. I recommend it. It's not long, but effectively presents essential guiding principles of motherhood. It's not so much a pratical guide, but a set of beliefs and approaches that you can apply no matter what stage of motherhood you are in.

I thought this book was overall good. It gave some very good reasons for being a stay at home mom and the benefits for your children. I liked that the author continually reminded the reader that being a good mom is doing what is best for each child. I would recommend this book to anyone that is a mother or soon to be mother.

Although short, it was difficult to read. In the end, I felt the suggestions were unrealistic and instead of helping me feel proud of my divine role as mother made me feel guilty. I shouldn't have kept reading it, but finished it in the hope it would have some good suggestions for me. It didn't.

So far I am loving it! I'm a working mom, and the first chapter has given me insights on maximizing my time with my daughter and reenforced what I feel to be right for my family. I'm excited to read on!
