The man who spearheaded the mission to find the missing Iraqi dictator and bring him to justice, Army Staff Sergeant Eric Maddox tells the entire incredible story in Capturing Saddam. A gripping true tale of perseverance and expert military intelligence gathering without the use of torture, Capturing Saddam chronicles the hunt for Saddam Hussein in fascinating detail, shedding light on one of the most amazing operations of the War in Iraq—and one of the most intensive manhunts in history—ranging from the U.S. Army’s operations center in Baghdad to Saddam’s cramped and dusty spider hole in Tikrit.
Great story of the inside events that lead to the capture of the world’s biggest target. The inner workings and thoughts behind the mind of the great interrogator and author Maddox was well written and detailed, even though the ending of the story is now well known. Even during a time of great trouble, one can build successful relationships with former enemies and now reformed allies.
This book was a lot of fun to read - following along Sgt Eric Maddox’s personal account/story of his forward deployment with operating teams, tracking down the terrorist top targets, and ultimately former president Saddam Hussein. His unique thinking and approach at interrogations on their captors leads them to the capture of Saddam at the literal last minute of his deployment in Iraq.
There’s a ton of long winded names in his journey that would be tough to keep track of, but each new interrogation he does a great job of explaining how each person ties into each other (plus there’s a table depiction as a reference). I’d recommend this exciting account to anyone
Compelling account from the interrogator's point of view. It definitely held my interest and helped me make connections I had not made before. My husband met the author several years ago, so that made the book that much more interesting to me.
A book that was hard to stop reading, not because I wanted to see how it ended (Saddam is captured!), but because it was so intriguing to read how it all took place and I just couldn't wait to see what happened next. This book could have been overly technical and detailed and hard to follow, but it wasn't. The book contained the right amount of information, gave the reader a good basic understanding of basic military protocols, wasn't sensational, contained just the facts, but not in a dry way. And Staff Sergeant Maddox, thanks for being a true "Barry Sanders" type of hero, thanks for believing in yourself and for doing your part in freeing the world from a portion of the evil that consumes it. I met Eric Maddox at the University of Kansas Lied Center on April 16, 2014 when he presented about how he and "intelligence" team members captured Saddam Hussein. The presentation was sponsored by the University's School of Business in conjunction with the Vickers Memorial Lecture Series. After the lecture, he visited with me and graciously autographed a copy of his book which he and the University gifted to me and others in attendance. Both the book and lecture were outstanding and moving. I will think about Eric and this book for many years to come! I had a profound learning experience.
I really enjoy historical books. Reading about a story I followed on tv filled in so many of the missing pieces. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
