Nadaar Log /

Rate this book
Published first in 1996 this novel by Abdullah Hussain is considered as a sequel to his famous Udaas Naslain. The story of this novel takes place during 1897 to 1974. This is the story of a generation that has no urge to protect and fight for its rights, people who have accepted everything as fate and have left themselves to the flow of time. The story really gets a takeoff after 1947 when Pakistan gets independence and the people who fought for certain ideals are pushed to wall by those who happen to be in corridors of power. The novel describes those years of indifference, difficulties and turbulence which first germinate the seeds of undemocratic governments and then it leads to secession of the country in 1971. The novel suggests that this was the period where if truth was upheld the history and the geography of Pakistan would have been different but since people kept silence which tantamount to a sin, so they have to reap the wages of this in shape of disintegrating the federation and losing their brothers. Nadar Loog is the story of a people who had great ideals but were found wanting in action when it mattered to stand and assert. This is the story about poverty of action and deeds that leads a nation and people to a state of flux.

I'm confused if this is a true story. cz at many points in the novel I felt THIS IS REAL!!
A book worth reading!
A time well spent indeed!

the best thing about this page turning book is its story masterly written by the author but the thing which makes it more interesting is the last part where you can read "to be continued" which keeps the suspense. . . . .

I first read Udaas Naslein and after reading that I landed here on "Nadaar Log". Abdullah Husain is often accused of unnecessary stretching of his writings which can be true but this stretching never bothers me. I enjoy his lengthy books and I feel like I can read him forever, that's why this flaw in his writing excites me. I had a great experience with this book. It covers the entire landscape of Pakistan's history in the 20th century in a very unbiased way including the formation of Pakistan and its religious basis, the immigration crisis back then, conflicts among the land owners and their subordinates, the rise of communist popularity in Pakistan, two martial laws and the RISE OF BHUTTO and poor hopes of poor masses for his socialist ideology and their subsequent disappointment. I love reading those historical novels where political history runs parallel. From the very first page, I was waiting for the incident of 1971, the fall of Dhaka. It happened in the mid of the novel and I would say, Abdullah Hussain, did not disappoint me. He did not cover the war crimes in the name of nationalism and patriotism. He touched on the internal conflict among the military after the fall of Dhaka in a very fair way. I'm totally impressed. The only flaw in this novel is those English lines that are written in Urdu script. English lines should always be written in English script.
My favorite male character: "Ejaz"
My favorite female character: Nasreen

Started re-reading this Classic Novel of Urdu language literature in early January, 2020. Had read it about 10 or fifteen years ago. Upon re-reading, I am being constantly surprised by the elaborate documentation of the Pakistan Labor Movement, the corrupt Pakistan Generals who sent very few soldiers to East Pakistan in 1970 than would have been needed to address the risk of Indian Army intervening in East Pakistan. He cites how 1940s model Tanks were sent !! He describes a scene where a Pakistani Army officer asks a junior army officer how many Bengali women did you rape and when the junior army officer says None, Sir! the senior officer gives him a resounding slap and says O You Eunuch!
I am half way through this exciting and well written Urdu novel . . .

Firstly I’ll thank @parh_likh for sending me this review book , which was really interesting to read .
This book is basically a life sketch of village lives how people their live with their own mindsets.
The people their accept everything happening around as their fate and do not have an urge to fix things up right.
The story plots before partition , it showed the understanding between Sikhs and Muslims at that time .
The book even highlights different generations , their loss , their troubles starting from Major Sarfaraz’s railway journey remembering his love Nasreen , the bond of his brother Aijaz , from a landing on a whole chapter of his father Yaqoob Awan and his friendship with Sikhs and how he had trouble with handling Sarfaraz after his wife died .
Then begins the chapter of Aijaz , where he gets kicked out without any consent from his government job. And then soo on . .
The novel basically tells you that truth matters alot , that how the a whole community falls beyond a persons truths , sins ideas , hatred . The novel is between 1897 to 1974 . The war the murders , especially the old thinking of killing lovers , I really feel sorry for Kilwat and Jagat . This book was really really beautiful, a page turner, especially the detailing of Dehat life, I personally loved its cover and i love village lives whenever i get to tour them so it really attracted me
Thankyou for sending me this i will cherish it forever

Not just a book, but a journey—a passage through time, woven with the threads of family. From grandfather to father, and then to two sons, it traces the legacy of generations. Within its pages, life unfolds in all its complexity: the peaks and valleys, the trials, the joys, the cherished memories. It’s a vivid portrayal of the human spirit's resilience, capturing the struggles of both the working class and the middle class. The story elegantly explores how our surroundings shape us, revealing the profound impact of environment on identity. It’s more than a story; it’s life itself, bound within the pages of a book.
The struggle & passion of Ijaz greatly reminds me of Faiz’s Nazm..

“Hum dekhenge
Lazim hai ke hum bhi dekhenge
Wo din ke jis ka wada hai
Jo lauh-e-azl mein likha hai
Jab zulm-o-sitam ke koh-e-garan
Rooi ki tarah ur jaenge
Hum mehkoomon ke paaon tale
Ye dharti dhar dhar dharkegi
Aur ahl-e-hakam ke sar oopar
Jab bijli kar kar karkegi
Jab arz-e-Khuda ke kaabe se
Sab but uthwae jaenge
Hum ahl-e-safa mardood-e-harm
Masnad pe bethae jaenge
Sab taaj uchale jaenge
Sab takht girae jaenge
Bas naam rahega Allah ka
Jo ghayab bhi hai hazir bhi
Jo manzar bhi hai nazir bhi
Utthega an-al-haq ka nara
Jo mai bhi hoon tum bhi ho
Aur raaj karegi Khalq-e-Khuda
Jo mai bhi hoon aur tum bhi ho”

Book: Nadar Log
Author: Abdullah Hussain
Published: 1996
🏷🔸️
He wrote Nadar Log نادارلوگ in 1996 which is based on 1971 war between India and Pakistan. The novel focuses on Sarfraz's story who was appointed in east Pakistan and went on to be a prisoner of war and reveals the causes behind the Dhaka fall. The novel is thought to be the sequel of Weary Generations ( اُداس نسلیں ) which tells the story from the 18th-century generation which has no urge to fight for rights and laws. People move and stand for independence and partition moves them to fight and speak. The struggle for poor remains the same, the fought for food and shelter, daily earning, local rights, and recognition. They are huge workforce but still exploited by power. The cycle of poverty and exploitation continues….

Absolutely brilliant scene description and story. But what impressed me about this book most is Abdullah Hussein, the author's selflessness that is evident on the first page. Hussein is unique in his approach towards his readers and it seems that he writes purely for the sake of literature and not for flaunting his personal grandiosity as a writer or intellectual. This book contains a complete era, story of a family and their evolution with the changing time and class shift. Author delicately sheds light on various socio-political scenario of the country. This book has undertone of humour and tragedy. A great book that is not only entertaining but also broadens the vision of its reader.

Just finished this masterpiece. When I started reading this book initially I wasn’t much into it but slowly it started opening.

I wonder even at the time of publishing this book how come it was possible with the little trusty especially about desaturated of 1971…?

Salute to Abdullah Hussain sb who had courage and power of words to expressed.

However, the end could be little bit longer explaining what exactly happened with Sarfraz and Ejaz.

Anyways, loved it.

Excellent, excellent book.

Abdullah Hussain's characters in NL fit his established archetypes from Udaas Naslein; the story flows really well and I was thoroughly invested in the characters from the very beginning of the book.
I wish the author had been more open about the names and dates of the historical events the characters were impacted by, but a great read overall.

Good book to read. But i was eagerly want to read Nadaar Log due to Udas naslain by abdullah hussain. But this book is not related to Udas naslain. Amazing character building is the most notable feature of Abdullah Hussain writing thanks for that.

Depressing.. it feels Jangloos, Udas Naslien and Nadar log are parts of same puzzle. A puzzle of moral, economic, social, cultural and personal corruption and hopelessness of people of Pakistan.
