A risky journey to the Teck world quickly spins out of control, sending Kase and Brell on a hunt to solve the mystery behind rumors of a monstrous creature.
Following a string of clues, they cross paths with old friends and older enemies. The more they learn, the deeper their path leads them into the heart of the wastelands and to a mysterious graveyard of ancient machines.
What they discover plunges them into a desperate war between a sister struggling to protect her kingdom of magic and her brother bent on using technology to destroy it.
The fate of the entire kingdom balances on a knife edge, with Kase and Brell standing on the tipping point. Will their next step mean the survival of magic or the triumph of technology?
Chris Fritschi is a best selling author with a passion for writing gripping stories, engaging characters and building worlds you can get lost in.
Whether fighting the undead with the Grave Diggers team or exploring an epic fantasy world of the Rift series readers are immersed in stories they can’t put down.
Chris and his wife live in their haunted house in Southern California.
Once again, Fritschi brings the reader into a unique world full of magic and technology. He does a great job of restating the events from Book 1 without being too repetitive. I cannot wait for the next one!!
Why I liked it
🦾 easy to read I’ve read some great science fiction but most of them have been so tedious and long-winded. I like how The Rift Series gives all the things we love about the genre, but does it in a concise way. There are some wordings and phrasings that just made me say WOW in appreciation. It’s just a smart book. 🦾 unique worlds The creatures, minerals, weather, and energy sources are different from any I’ve read about. We finally get to see the Teck world about 50% in! I like how intricate these worlds are but totally imaginable with no over-the-top descriptions. 🦾 the main characters Brell and Kase had my heart from the first book and this one just confirmed it more. They’re finally becoming friends and laughing WITH each other instead of AT each other (most of the time). They’re starting to understand each others’ perspectives and confronting their biases about each others’ worlds. 🦾 great moments of suspense there were incidents that had me gasping and holding my breath! Definitely some creepy and tense moments 🦾 side characters I was really happy about the introduction of a flirty, morally gray side character. I hope he makes a reappearance in future books! 🦾third person omniscient POV It mainly focuses on our MCs, Brell and Kase, but we get some insight into some side characters as well which is fun!
⚠️ Content Warnings ⚠️ - claustrophobic situations - intrusive thoughts - violence and death
Cute story but bogged down by pacing/structural issues so it lost a lot of the charm of the first novel for me. The initial glimpses of the lost kingdom felt out of place, confusing, and so utterly random. When we finally got an explanation and more context, the earlier scenes felt redundant and tacked on to up the word count or IDK why they were added. I think they would have worked better as a visual flashback imposed by Alwyn or the princess to show Kase, Brell, and the readers what happened - but even then, the author accomplished the same thing with a few sentences of dialog.
I wish we had more parts with Alwyn. I was expecting this story to build on the events of the Spiritbridge book a bit more. I understand that using magic is verboten in the land of Teck but in the first book, Kase was far more curious and impulsive, with his naive excitement being more integral to the plot. In this book, all of that seems to be replaced with a forced empathy/compassion that is so instantaneous that it feels too fake. I'd believe his reactions and shifting understandings of the Stitchers if he pulled a "Slum Dog Millionaire" type of thing where he could relate current events to his past experiences in a more direct and concise manner.
I was looking forward to the next installment of this series just to see how things are tied up and resolved with Ethan but it's not in KU and this book makes me doubt the next one is worth the 5 bucks.
I received a digital advanced reader copy of this book from the author for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This sequel was just as much fun to read as SpiritBridge was. The story follows Kase and Brell to the Teck world and shows how different life is there from the Creet world. The book also showed more viewpoints from Brell and we got to learn a little bit more of her backstory.
It felt like so much happened in this book. One thing after another happened, which built on each other and cascaded into the epic finale at the end.
I also really enjoyed seeing Kase and Brell's friendship become stronger as each started to understand the other's world and views better and even started to accept that each other's worlds weren't as bad as they originally thought.
This was a fantastic follow-up to SpiritBridge and I can't wait to read the next book when it comes out.
Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. Join Brell and Kase on the trail of a wayward bot. After a murder is found, they are forced to flee. The bot needs to be destroyed. Interesting things happen when Brell is in need of a new gun. She grudgingly agrees to let Kase cross into the Rift to the land of technology. He must keep his magic hidden or face certain death. But interesting developments arise when an evil plot is discovered and a hidden civilization is discovered. It is up to Kase and Brell to find the answers and defeat is not an option. Action packed with lots of suspense and nail biting twists and turns will have you glued to the pages from start to finish. The ending will just make you want more!
I enjoyed this continuation of the series. Switching from a magic based to a tec based world led to getting to see so much more about the characters! Kase and Brell become more and more developed and 3 dimensional each book. The newly introduced characters are similarly a delight.
Author Fritschi does an excellent job setting the stage for this story and letting us as readers come along for the ride. The pacing is fast, the plot is good, and there are loads of high stakes issues that need to be resolved.
The storyline wraps up nicely, but there is an overall series arc and I'm looking forward to reading the 3rd book in the series.
I love the world that has been created, and the differences in the opposing sides of the magical and tech worlds. At first they seem like complete opposites, but they have more in common than you would think. Brell is my favorite! She is such an amazing badass character. Her evolution in the novel is wonderful to watch. Watching Kase grow as a mage was wonderful as well, even though his curiosity may not be the safest thing to have. All in all, a wonderful book with a ton of suspense, adventure, action, and magic. Great read!
I love this fantasy world that Mr Fritschi has created. Full of Mages, magic, spells, adventures and plenty of danger along the way for our heroes, Kase and Brell. A great story to keep you hooked all the way through. Very enjoyable !
Brilliant follow up and continues nicely. Kase and Brell are in trouble again. They have rather a lot of difficulties to overcome, and things don't go as planned. Will everything work out, will they both make it out alive?
This was a really great read! A really good mix of dystopian & fantasy, great ideas, well developed characters & plot, a really good length story, so something to really escape into! I do recommend & will for sure read the next part of this adventure!
I love the concept of this series! Teck(not a spelling error!) and magic at odds, alright, not at odds, complete loathing and revulsion one for the other. The switching between worlds was done so well, with such excellent world building and visualisation. These two worlds couldn't be more different or more the same, as Kase gets to discover.
I really really love Brell! What an awesome character! I can feel her changing, not only see it via the incredible descriptive text. She projects a tough and ruthless exterior, she has to, to survive. I love how Kase pushes her buttons, he honestly gets a kick out of doing it, because Kase is, well, Kase! He's so impetus, he's more than curious, he's inquisitive, he's so filled with wanderlust and trusting to a fault. I honestly don't think he realises that life is not an adventure, it can be downright dangerous! And he just knows he was always meant to be a Mage, only everyone around him doesn't! Few take him seriously going as far as to place bets whether he survives his "adventures" And his mouth! My goodness! He's so full of wonder at everything he sees, anyone he meets, he can't help himself, he HAS to introduce himself and start a conversation! He tries so hard to master his magic, gotta love him! His connection to Alwyn is so cool, I love Alwyn's demeanor, which is weird seeing as he's a Spiritbridge in a glove! But his voice is a profound one, his role so important. I love how he chastises Kase, he behaves almost like his father figure. Kase, Kase, Kase, will he ever learn that curiosity killed the cat?
Gosh is Naz a complex character! I can see why he turned to dark magic, not that I agree with that but I do understand his motivation. He's not all rotten to the core, circumstances have made him what he is. Arrogant and confident Naz goes all out to destroy them all, Creets and Tecks alike as he puts his master plan in action. I loved the final battle scenes, I wasn't sure whether to cringe or laugh at Kase's audacity, I did both...
There were some "eeewww" moments with the Stitchers, I'll leave that name to your imagination...so vivid, so gross! There's action, there's interospection, lots of adventure, there's magic, there's actually a ton of everything but underlying it all, is it's really fun!
