When the impending nuptials of seventy-one-year-old Mayor Hale Dunbar and the widow Gaylie Lyons are threatened by the bride-to-be's disapproving grown children, the Nitwitts plan a welcome for the children designed to garner their approval. By the author of Kissing Babies at the Piggly Wiggly.
Weddings are big news in Second Creek, Mississippi, especially when the wedding is that of the town's new mayor seventy-one-years-young Hale "Mr. Choppy" Dunbar. He is about to tie the knot with Gaylie Lyons, to whom he'd first lost his heart to back in the 1940s. Of course The Nitwits, a group of wealthy Southern widows, are all aflutter and busy helping Gaylie Girl with all the arrangements.
The Piggly Wiggly books are what I call whimsical charming little books about this group of wealthy Southern Widows, who call themselves, "The Nitwits." Along with the books being whimsical, they are lighthearted and charming with some southern humor scattered throughout the story.
Joan Medlicott, author of "The Ladies of Covington Send Their Love," had this to say: "Quirky people, quirky weather, lost dreams, and hopes come together in this cleverly crafted, wise, and wonderful tale. A delightful story of optimism, hope, and new beginnings, at any age." I think that about sums up my viewpoints of this book, also.
This is the second "Piggly Wiggly" book that I've read. The markets are found in the South. This book takes place in Second Creek, Mississippi. It involves events leading up to the wedding of the town's new mayor; Mr. Hale "Mr. Choppy" Dunbar and Gaylie Lyons who originally met in l940. Wedding plans do not go smoothly. However, the best part of the book is the end where something magical happens.
This book was a nice look at the Southern way of doing things. The ladies and gentleman in this book show what friendship is supposed to be and support each other. I love the descriptions of the town and homes. Was excited to read that Gaylie and Mr Choppy were getting married and enjoying their golden years. I was left hoping that I had some Nittwitts in my life.
This was a DNF for me. Maybe I just don’t get Southern culture, but the pacing was slower than molasses and the characters just weren’t interesting enough to keep me reading.
This is a whimsical story about a couple picking up on their romance after 50 years apart. They plan a wedding to take place in their home town of Second Creek, Mississippi. Their wedding plans are going through a rough patch, with her children against the marriage. The local woman's group called the Nitwitts have made it their mantra to smooth the way for the bride and groom to have the wedding of their dreams. A funny little story!
A nauseatingly sweet novel centering around a group of seniors (aka elderly) in the South.
This is part of a series of books concerning the Wiggly Piggly and its' owner. Apparently after almost 50 years, Mayor Hale has finally hooked up with his life long love Gaylie Girl. Yes, that's right, her name is Gaylie Girl. I should've stopped reading at this point.
Anyway, Second Creek Mississippi is, apparently, the place to be, where some bored widowed women have apparently decided to rechristen themselves as The Nitwitts and have vowed to solve every problem in this little town. The town is perfect, the women are perfect cooks, hostesses, interior decorators and no one throws a bad party. They all take piano lessons together and are all great at playing the piano! They are even all accomplished tango dancers.
I found the story to have no substance. Characters were flat and unbelievable. The whole story was unbelievable. It was a little too Pollyannish for me. I also found the actual plot line of Gaylie Girl trying to convince her children into accepting her new life was done mid-way in the book. The story could have stopped at this point but the author dragged it out for the second half.
If you want a read that is non-taxing on the brain, this is for you.
Cute, frothy little Southern novel. Nothing really unique in the realm of Southern fiction. For those who get a kick out of cute Southern books, this will fit the bill nicely. Me, I guess I got my fill of Southern eccentricity just LIVING down there for so long.
Had a good time reading this. Stories about a second chance at love for an older couple who went to school together. The story involves her spoiled children not being able to see her rich mom moving to a backwoods city and marrying a former owner of a piggly, wiggly story. But a group of local women calling themselves the nitwits came to their aid and save the day. Very enjoyable read
