Ron Edwards is best known for the books that he writes and illustrates on Australian bush crafts and songs. He lives in a home that he built of earth and timber cut on the site and surrounded by a tropical garden in the mountains above Cairns in north Queensland. This book began as a series of paintings made in the kitchen while the family cats were waiting for their evening meal. The hen that is shown in a couple of paintings was a rather dotty creature called Daphne who adopted the kitchen in preference to the hen house.
